Out of all the years I've had this game, I never noticed this before: the Champions' deaths are supposed to be shown in chronological order, but Midknight dies in 2100 AD, and Blade--right after him--dies in 2030 AD.
Did the devs goof, did the voice actor say the wrong death year for Blade, or am I missing something else here? :-/
(Eh, I dunno...maybe I'm just nitpicky with details. Kind of like how the Dark Champion here "reveals" that the Eternal Champion overlooked the four new combatants (Ramses III, Riptide, Raven and Dawson). Nevermind that the Eternal Champion MOST CERTAINLY *DID* JUST PLAY SHOW-AND-TELL WITH EACH OF THESE FOUR NEWCOMERS' DEATHS....)
(Oy. I need a chill pill and a good stout beer, I guess.)
The presentation of this game was way ahead of it's time. If only Sega of Japan had let Sega of America use more resources on Mega/Sega CD then it may have enjoyed somre real success. There sure was potential and Sega squanderedit like they have with every system they have ever had.
Quick question. I dug out the game and my brother's system and I'm trying to change things like difficulty level. How do I do that? I end up selecting a character instead and the game begins. I wish I could dig up a manual if there is one.
I remember this game. This game ushered in Overkills (stage kills), fatalities (cinekills), and was very under-rated. Scorpion's disappearing move started with Shadow the Ninja. This games was great. If you still have your SegaCD. Buy it and play it.
Very true..they also completely killed it with Armageddeon. What a steaming pile. Hopefully it'll revive itself with MK vs. DC Universe...maybe.. But still..you gotta give props to some of the great oldschool games and Eternal Champions was one of them.
@OfficialMC2 ...or specifically, Sega had a few dollars and a choice to develop either Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter or another Virtua Fighter sequel.
They opted for Virtua Fighter, believing it would be the more popular choice. And so, despite the back of the next-gen Sega Genesis' box showing a screenshot from Eternal Champions III, that game got scrapped.
@Dynaman21 So you're a VF fan. How many of the rest of us are VF fans? And if VF is so great, then why doesn't it have its own movies, cartoons and comic books?
Yeah, I know...neither does Eternal Champions. But a lot of us old Sega players still remember that game for pushing the envelope like it did...and it looked pretty snazzy while doing it.
I still say that Sega should have made EC3 instead.
@BloodyBay Let's see...5 games, a two season anime which was pretty much a parody of the uber-strict gameplay (and was surprisingly well done), and a continued presence on consoles. It's done pretty well for itself all things considered. At that point in time, 2D was out and 3D was in, hence the focus on VF to rival Tekken. No way could EC have done anything against Tekken.
@Dynaman21 That right there is the reason why some EC fans scorn Sega's decision. EC represented Sega doing their own thing: a cast of fighters with widely varied styles and appearances taken from all across the time continuum, imaginative maneuvers and fatalities and an overall "cool factor". Instead, they chose to keep up with the Joneses and copy Tekken with VF.
Maybe they should have let Tekken be Tekken and brought EC3 into the 3D fighter genre instead. It might have worked.
@BloodyBay I can tell you right now that if Eternal Champions went head to head with Tekken it would have been slaughtered. Also, 2D gameplay mechanics rarely work in 3D. Mortal Kombat, the game Eternal Champions was created to rival, pretty much proved that. I have no true ill will towards EC, but Virtua Fighter was a successful franchise and continued well past the end of Sega's hardware days. I don't know if EC could have done that.
yeah because mortal combat yet still has to prove its gore, they know they had it in them but stil never seen this in any mk game, the home conversions where just notthat good comared to the arcades.
Thats very untrue, I like the megadrive version better than the arcade, they music is better and the graphics are not all that bad for the megadrive! MDFTW!
well i still prefer MK in the arcade but ultimate 2 or trilology then arcade version of mk had the great depht i still liked them on md but i dont play em like i used to.
You think it'll be a shallow fighting game meant for superhero loving kids, when, in actuality, it's got a depth and charm of its own and a decent story, while secretly being gorier than anything else on the market at the time (or, even now.)
I could really see the look on a soccer man's face when she goes from watching little Billy's cowboy beating up Susie's Ninja to the latter getting sliced up by the blades in Midknight's stage.
"Not so fast brother, you didn't realize the four contestants I withheld to hasten your destruction. But I'm weary of all this scribble and scrawl so i too shall join your contest. be warned my power will destroy you with your fears!!" they had to wrap it up to save room for more glory.
I was fukin OBSESSED with this game when it first came out! I use to play it for countless hours on end, getting all the secret characters, doin all the *vendetas* and level "fatalities"
They got Blade's story wrong... he wasn't eliminated by his govt. he was supposed to find a scientist who had a vile that would let out a virus or some shit. his govt followed him as backup when he told them not to and they did it anyway and fucked it up. "The last thing Blade saw was the vile smashed on the ground".
either way, the gvt. fucked everything up, much like now. and sheek973 is right this game OWN3D World Heroes. WH was too easy, I beat it with dragon in two minutes!
Wow, that was awful. XD No hating on the game though! The Sega Genesis version is a classic. I'm sure this vid is more appreciated by nostalgics that were amazed when it first came out. =)

Before Sega created Eternal Champions, they created an anime-style fighter, Burning Rival.

EC is the best fighting game. Completely under-rated and under-valued.
EC > SFII > MK.
I bought a Mega CD and Megadrive on ebay for 250 dollars and I paid 50 dollars for the game on ebay. just to play EC-CD.
all other fighting games are boring. I want a new EC on the Wii!
