I like both, Guns N' Roses AND Metallica. But in this case, I would say James. I pick him because he wasn't a drug addict or an alcoholic. But for the music, I like both. They're two different genres, so you can't compare them.
Guns N Roses is actuallty a Hard Rock and Heavy Metal band, unlike Metallica which performs Heavy Metal and Trash Metal. Similar, but still different.

Metallica's material is mostly adapted for middle range melodies and harmonies, as someone who studies mainly technique of the best (metal) vocalists in the world & sing seriously, I do know how demanding James's singing is in opposite of Axl, there is no comparison.

Guns N Roses is actuallty a Hard Rock and Heavy Metal band, unlike Metallica which performs Heavy Metal and Trash Metal. Similar, but still different.
And meanwhile, in whatever way, Axl wins. I can't imagine James Hetfield hitting such high tones as Axl does. And his voice is not as characteristic as Axl's.
