Fillmore did his best to please both sides of the arguement, and in the end he pleased no one. His goal was keeping the nation together, and he truly believed that the Compromise of 1850 could do this. ALSO, I don't even know where you got the idea that Fillmore wanted to recolonize slaves to Africa. Marrying Abigial Powers wasn't that bad at the time. They were only two years apart.

Because of the Compromise of 1850, people often believe that he was in favor of slavery, but he was actual opposed to slavery due to his poverty-stricken background. Also you can not blame the Civil War on Fillmore alone, he was merely caught up in this problem that had been escalding since the Founding Fathers ignored it. The Civil War was inevitable, M.F. merely stalled it.
