I am confused, and I mean no harm, but where are the other people that I saw in the other clips? Is this like HAIRSPRAY where the show had Negro Day? Seriously, I am not cracking any jokes. I am just curious. I know it was a different time and era. For the record, I am enjoying the clips no matter who is dancing. It is great to see, especially someone like me who was is curious and into the music and dancing during this time period.
They weren't applying any restraint, it is Ohio! If you want to see kids dance really cool, watch the clips from the Jerry Blavat shows in Philly, The "Disco phonic scene". Philly ruled!
PS: American Bandstand eventually broke the color line in 1958, and I am sure this effected some sponsorship from local advertisers, however, because A.B. was telecast nationally on ABC it didn't effect the shows ratings much. There were some boycotts in Philadelphia though, it didn't last long though.
Frankie Lymon dancing with a white girl in July of 1957 got Alan Freed's ABC show The Big Beat cancelled. Would that be the instance of braodcast barriers being broken down? Bandstand got blacked out in Baltimore and other markets for allowing black teenagers to dance on the show, altho not with white teenagers. The Buddy Deane Show in Baltimore would allow Colored Day every other Friday, where black teens could dance.
Who the hell cared back then if it was blacked out in Baltimore! None the less Dick Clark prevailed and persuaded the sponsors to ride it out, The Philadelphia Inquirer was the biggest sponsor for the show in Philadelphia, you need to do some research about Bandstand's Philly years!
It is so clear that these kids were asked to apply restraint. You can see they were capable of carrying out some serious moves if they were allowed to. This is the best of the TEEN TIME videos so far.
I feel like I'm conforming to some sort of stereotypical ideas here, but the cats on this one dance a lot better than one of the earlier shows where it was all white kids...
Do you know what happened to the host of this show? Our equivilent, jerry Blavat, is still doing his thing, big time in Philly and Jersey. I really enjoy these clips. My friends think that I'm nuts, but what do they know. I have to say that ,overall, there is a difference in the east coast/midwest style.
@subscooby - Yeah, I knew it - you're in the UK. That figures. You've just got to show how liberal you are, lol.
All of these YouTube clips have someone from the UK letting everyone know that they think blacks are "cool" as compared to whites. We got it already - you're liberal. Got it, thanks.

Eh, there's nothing special about these kid's dancing, it's pretty stiff, jitterbuggers of the 40s would knock this out of the park.

Look how far away they dance from each other. Hardly even look at each other. Sure looks fun though.

Just like Soul Train and American Band Stand. History is something else.

I agree. Did they have seperate shows for black and white kids? I know that in Philly they were usually seperate.

I dunno. I guess it wouldn't surprise me though.

@subscooby Yes you are right, but give white kids credit, at least rythym.
