  • 3 days after i got my first bass I started to learn Hysteria - Muse, took me 30 minutes to perfect it. Deanne The Arsonist - Atreyu, about 1hr 30mins. Wrote lyrics for the first time, took me 30 - 40 minutes to write enough for a full song, with no prior experience or knowledge. Everybody loves it. Since then I've learnt to scream, sing, written lyrics for 9 other songs (which everyone loves), put together two bands (I'm the manager and major song writer for both), and I'm teaching people to sc

  • TRASH!!!

  • do you have tab for this

  • one question....where's the groove???

  • And... After one year, you have a Music Man Stingray ?

  • I'm playing bass for one and a half year now, but I'm usually practicing about 3-4 hours a day and this would be too easy to play for me. btw i'm playing progressive metal..

  • yeah!!!!!

  • I've been playing for 2 years and I can't play like that yet. I might be better at timing than you were back when you made this, but I can't play that many notes that quickly yet. I also can't really come up with any of my own bass lines yet. Hopefully that will come.

  • could you send me the tabs please

  • rightous been playing for almost a year now and im sure we have similar practice habits haha no one believes me wen i say 1yr ,espechially wen slappin out funk haha theyll b like well how long have you been playing guitar haha naaaa just the bottom end baby! keep that shit up brother ! BASS BITCHES!

  • i think the reason people dont believe you is because alot of people teach themselves these days. when that happens you can only get as good as you try to be, but when by yourself its hard to figure which techniques are important, which is why most are sloppy, because everyone wants to know flashy techniques. im not a expert, but your lines were a bit sloppy, im not great myself, but i play for fun, not technicality. good job though.

  • can u give me tabs maybe =/ put in description or..?

  • is this standard tuning

  • 1 year man, 1 year!

  • yeah you right, for one year its pretty good but if more as 3.5 year not.

Keep practicing man, think you 've got the skills

  • 1 have one year two

    you´re nice

  • Good for a year.but your not popping. so don't slap. I hope you do now. Good effort, play further up the fretboard, a bassist is often measured on how well they can play on the first 5 frets. otherwise become a guitarist. Well done.

  • duder what your saying is bull shit if you dont learn scales and stuffhow can you make your own music ... are you gonna spend your life totally on covering songs huh... and if you even make your music by it how are you gonna cope up with the other band members or any partner your playing with aye....

  • Nice job dude, iv got some roughly recorded riffs up too, check em out. =D

  • I agree, novice sounding, but not bad for 1 year. Why novice? well, first of all the fingering could use a little help. Really his plucking hand really looks like a crap having a siezure. Helpful tip: tuck your pinky and ring finger under your hand, that'll help relax it, of course if it aint broke , don't fix it, it aint my hand. And speed doesn't equal good. I could say more, but I don't want to insult anyone or start an argument. Hoof Hearted?

  • @unclespeeder .....I meant CRAB having a siezure, not a CRAP....sorry.

  • great job...not too many descent bassist from around where im at...

  • One year and I'M pretty damn good, but at different kinds of things. What kind of amp do you have? It's got messed up overdrive you should be careful for! Very interesting though! I never remember any of the riffs and stuff I play, congratulations!!!

  • I just hope your right hand is now more relaxed after 2 years (or 3). =D

    Keep up the good work.

  • If u ask me, thats fucking good for 1 year!

I have played about a year, and i'm not that good, that is way better than me!

    faster at least =)

  • i can see how you would be considered a novice, i'm a novice as well but i also play the sax. you probably already know this by now but you hit a bad note towards the end like you hit a sharp or flat. other than that its still good.

  • how the fuck is that novice?

  • Hey guys. The timing is pretty off and it's flashy and fast but overall from a musical standpoint it's not very good. I've since gotten a lot better. If you can't tell that i'd only been playing for a year from these videos then it just shows that you're a novice. The technique is bad, the timing is off, and the riffs aren't really that great.

  • It was interesting, but if you look at it in the big picture, these are very useless

  • And i have a few tips if you wana be good at an instrument really quickly.

1.) always have it near, or in my case next to you. In the room you are most keep it there, i pick up my bass every 5 mins and have a lil jam session then back down. and it works

2.)Start with covering songs, then move onto making your own riffs, then study a few scales, and move onto improvising until you play that instrument without thinking ^.^ . Then try to make up your own techniques or styles of technique, FUN

  • I say get your technique, timing, and knowledge down first. Having a good teacher will advance you much faster. This helps with making MUSIC and playing in a band, and if you're "that" kind of person, this formula will help: technique+knowledge-->awesome solos (of any style)

  • i agree. This video is different to my first 8 - 10 months of bass so far. I practice alot, started with playing songs and rifs to pick up the feel, then after that i flew off. Practice all the time, and so far im playing the equivalent of this sorta stuff but in pop n slap, making up my own stuff, improvising without thinking. Its amazinng fun to play. i played guitar for 3 years and couldnt play it, i play bass for 10 months or so, and ive covered 2-3 years work ^.^, all in the time.

  • only been 1 year then and you already had a stingray?? damn...

  • maybe it's the Sterling, but STILL!!!

  • Very good for a year. Most people can't create their own riffs that actually sound good after a year. And your speed and technique is something I'd expect from somebody with 2-3 years experience. You must have practiced a lot or just be a natural.

One thing (though I'm sure you've fixed it by now), your right hand looks SUPER tense. You should learn to relax it and not have your pinky and ring finger spread out so much.

  • I like it, its harder than it sounds to build up a riff, keep jammin bro!

  • Isn't that difficult.

I've been playing for the years now and i could've done that too a year before.

It's not about how many years you've been touching the instrument, it's about how many hours you were actually PRACTICING techniques and stuff. I play almost 5 to 6 hours a day at home and i study at a conservatory.

    So practice, don't play songs.

And practice makes you better, playing songs does too, but not nearly as good.

  • 5-6 hours? do not go to school/work !?!

  • I completely disagree. I've been playing something like three years no - i dont know a single scale, nor can I read music. I've learnt by playing and learning (mostly) Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, and without sounding too cocky, I think I'm quite good.

All I'm saying is I dont believe that you need to sit and learn scales and drill techniques to be a good player.

  • @beanflea12 omg. of course you need to understand scales! how else are you going to be able to understand what key your playing in and how to structure your riffs correctly. Red Hot Chilis suck... and all they play is root notes... no good bassist just plays root notes

  • @Dalvidos Dude, go listen to Flea's solos. Then come back to me and tell me he only plays root notes

  • @beanflea12

Although learning an instrument like that is easy and more fun, the odds are it won't get you anywhere in the music industry today. I play bass, so let's say that man approaches both of us and explains that he is looking for wedding musicians and is paying $500 dollar for a bass player who can read music/charts. I'll get the job, the money, the free drinks, and the bridesmaids while you'll be at home learning some more RHCP thinking you're a God. Just saying, versatility is key.

  • im not really impressed. from the info thing it sounds like you put up this video just so ignorant people would think you're a prodigy or something

  • Pretty good, you need more accuracy with your left hand and you need to get your right hand under control, there's a lot of unecessary movement there.

  • Wow...Yeah, that is very good for only playing for a year. (same with your slap vid.) Good job

  • Really good playing, awesome, keep up the good work and hope to see more videos from you

  • ok i use a pick though. gotta get a camera for this.

  • i though it was pretty clear he was relatively new. the only impressive thing is that he can play fast. only sticking with two fingers and playing something like that proves his beginner status, w/o switching up to three, four or four+thumb.

I would like to see some of your new stuff since you said it's been at least a year later.. other than that, not too bad for 1 year

  • i've been playing less than a year and i could do better.

  • really good stuff mate.

  • Sounds mostly great. In that year, how often did you practice? The time scale means little, its the frequency and duration of your practice that brings improvement, and it sounds like you play quite a bit. Bravo.

  • ur awesome. u have this tabbed?

  • nice playing ive been playing 2 years. ive just recently joined a metal band and i was wondering if anyone knew any good tuning for metal?

  • whatever your guitarists play in! :P

  • some bands like to use drop D, ive been playing for two years as well but da band dat im in right now were tuned to C so yeah.........

  • drop D is probably most famous in metal.

Though I love to play in drop c, d standard and drop b.

  • i got joint damage so i cant do that finger stuff. but i like to slap my bass.

  • well.... hounestly, i've been playing bass for about a year now and im soo not that good

soo yeah u r really good considering...

    =) sounds awesome too

  • good stuff, this video really shows how important it is to learn the fundamentals such as becoming confident in running through scales etc. not perfect, no, but an excellent foundation to improve on, which I'm sure you have in the time since you filmed this.

  • ONLY A YEAR!! Nice playing dude i've almost been playing for a year, and im not quite that good yet but my teachers had me focus strongly on techniqe no offence or anything but you techniqe slipped slightly throught the fast playing but it still sounded amazing so nice work!! :)

  • hi kungfu,

I agree the technique is sloppy I'm surprised that people don't see this. This video really isn't that good and i can definitely see someone learning this stuff in a year since a lot of it isn't even on time.

  • are u shure that you're just playing for about 1 year??? really great dude :)

  • oh wow, I hope I'm at least that good in a year! :/

  • nice slapping on the end

  • mice gitar!!!!!!!!!!

  • man u got to work on technique rather than how fast i can play because wen try to play that fast without hiting that hard u wont hear the notes and try pratcing using 1 finger insted 2.if u train index to go as fast as both them and try pratcing slap bass u need some work on that

  • u're doing good man

    thats a nice stuff here

    and cool bass =P

    check out my videos too

    cya!

  • pretty chill and mellow,

    props.

  • Looks like an Ernie Ball.

  • Hmmm i don't think that you only played 1 year...Your right hand is trained very well an your left hand is fast too...And your bass seems

to be an expensive one too.

Of course it's ok to be proud of what you played but where's the problem of saying "well i played 2 or 3 years and that's me playing" instead of thinking,"well maybe they tink i'm bad for 2years let's say i only played for one" no offense it sounds great but i noticed that some people think like this

  • You're so right man

  • i agree with you but i think its obvious and not worth pointing out.

  • Maybe he's like me and plays non-stop. xD

  • or maybe he's just good.

  • This video is about a year old now. I have been playing bass for over two years at this point. To be exact, when I first posted this video, I had been playing for 1 year and 3 months. I would practice for literally 2, 3, sometimes 4 hours a day. So i probably put in 3 years' worth of time into playing bass in only one year. Get what I'm saying?

  • very good ;D

  • did you play guitar before bass, cause you play very good for 1 year...

  • hahaha good i suppose, but I jsut picked up the bass less than a week ago and I can follow you on this stuff. keep practicing.

  • well i never played and i'm better than you because you suck ass you loser follower, the guy in the video sounds cool though

  • maybe you should post a video.

  • second riff was to fast imo, if you just slow down a little bit it could be much better.

  • A Musicman?

  • is that an ernie ball bass?

  • u should do more funk ude be amazing at it!!!!

    keep it up!

  • Yeah, we're basically in the same boat. Although, I see there being 3 stages of playing as far as bass goes; simple (stereotypical/root-note) lines, complex lines (eg. Muse, Chilipeppers, etc.) and then solo lines... At the moment I'm mostly focussing on complex lines and theory with a TINY amount of focuss going to simple lines. When I learn to slap properly and when I learn to tap I'll start focussing on soloing

  • Yeah, I guess you've got a point; most guitarists DO see bass from a limited perspective and are, therefor, less inclined to switch instruments.

Well, that's fair enough; I'm glad you dont see as many limitations as others do. I dont really see any; sure, bass cant do everything a guitar can... But thats because 1. Its a different instrument and shouldnt have to and 2. Because no one's really put the effort into DOING those things with a bass

  • Furthermore... Think about bassists like Gene Simmons (possibly the biggest ego in music history), Flea, Sid Vicious, Nikki Sixx, etc. etc... So there is plenty room for ego with the instrument (you've just gotta be bold enough to break stereotypes and not be willing to settle for any less)

  • Well, I agree to an extent... However, I believe that point of view underestimates the instrument (and this, I believe, is the reason there are so few bassists; people underestimate the instrument). I agree that the traditional bass line plays an important purpose, but it can EASILY be a solo instrument.

I want to compromise in my band by using a loop-station to loop the mundane lines so I can play more complex lines over the top (and my band mates love the idea)

  • the bass is a truly amazing instrument in its own right, and in most cases, far more diverse than guitar, this guys great for the time he has been playing

  • cool, how long does it take to get learn those.get that good if i practiced a little every day?

  • nice dude i been playing bass for like 8 months or so, i prefer the slap, ike get up and jump etc. there fun to play but im gettting into the plucked shiz iol upload a video soon, liked your double slap:)

  • whats up geddy lee?

  • damn dude you play really fast and well. I wish i was that good!

  • i tried bass at my school and i had more fun than guitar which ive been playin for a while does any1 think i could eaisly make the transition cause bass is so much more fun

  • im going to be starting bassin a month or so (which is when i'll be able to afford to buy one- probably a cheaper Dean or Maybe a used Yamaha) but do you think i should get a teacher or would starting on my own be alright?

  • I have used a teacher for a couple of months, because the basics are important, after that i was on my own :)

  • I started off teaching myself, the I used a teacher... Honestly, I'd say you'd be better off making friends with a couple bass players and just jam/hang out with them. In many cases, if the bass players you hang out with are good, you'll learn more by doing this than you will by going to a teacher. BUT, if you have the cash, going to a teacher never hurts

  • thats a nice lick mate, really good finger work.

    keep at it bud

  • geez, ive been playing for like a year and a half and i cant do that shit. nice man

  • Dude it'll take more than a year and a half...

  • dude keep it up ur relly good

there's a short on bass players and drummers

some one will pick u up to play for them great job man

  • I've noticed that; it's over here in Australia too! I've only been playing for like 6 months and already I've had several offers to join bands simply because there arent enough bassists. Many of the bassists I know play in TWO bands...

  • my friend had a bass for 3 days and he could play things like higher ground and tell me baby...they are really hard bass parts by flea if you have not heard it definitly listen to flea he is one of the best bassists

  • bullshit youve been playing little over a year

  • ask anyone, its the truth.

  • bullshit youve been playing little over a year

  • my friend picked up his first guitar an after 2 weeks he could play jerryc's connon rock

sum ppl have this weird way of learnin fast

but also this guy could already be able to play guitar welll so just added the bass like fingerin to a guitar riff he made up

so just relax =] its not that much of a biggy

  • Does anyone wanna show me some a video with proper technique. Im just curious because now i want to know if im playing properly. I really dont want carpal tunnel.

  • as long as your keep your wrist straight you wont get carpal tunnel, it will improve the tone of your playing also.

  • WTF!!!!

  • some of the best right hand technique on youtube i have seen so far only the pinky left

  • haha yeah, you gonna break your hands:P but.. if it plays nice.. just go alone with it xD i dunn care.. sound that matters(A)

  • lol, everyones pissin a chicken about hand technique. Mindbodylightsound though has a good point.

  • Dude, not to break your balls but you really need lessons if you aren't alrady taking some. You're right hand technique looks painful just to watch. Relax your fucking hand.

  • The fact is, this sounds pretty good for someone who's not been playing for long, so what does it matter if the hand isn't how people want it? If it sounds good, let it be- contrary to what some may think, playing music isn't about looking as good as you can, it's about the sounds, so if this works for the guy, fair enough. We all have our own styles and techniques, so respect diversity, don't criticise it.

  • You're missing the point.

    Carpal tunnel syndrome garaunteed.

  • It's nice you are looking out for other players, but if the guy wants to do it this way, I don't see a problem.

  • The only thing about my right hand technique is that my pinky is raised. I can't help it. It's not detrimental to my technique at all, i asked my teacher about it. i dont see why this video is getting so much hype. looking back at it now, the playing is a bit sloppy, and i have other way better videos.

  • The reason I commented is because you're often using the small joints of your fingers in sort of a 'claw' fashion rather than plucking with the big joints in the hand which is how other people play. The idea behind using the bigger muscles in your hand is that they don't tire as easily, you get a more stronger consistent pulse, greater finger control, and you don't have to tense up your wrist when you play which is what you're doing.

  • If you want to do that you will most likely develop a case of Carpal tunnel down the road. Try watching some other professional bass players right hands. They don't pluck like that.

  • I have no problems in terms of right hand pain. I'll talk to my teacher about it and see what he says though. He was taught by Dave LaRue so he kind of knows what he's talking about.

    Thanks for the input.

  • there's no soul listen to some funk or blues

  • oh my god, get off your high horse..."high aptitude"? go watch john myung, leeland sklar, john entwistle, ric fierabracci, i could go on. those men have high aptitude.

you have about 7 or 8 lessons in a year if im understanding that right? so not even once a month? the reason you THINK your so good is because you have no humility. check yourself, seriously.

  • actually, i have a LOT to learn. thats why these videos are up; so my teacher can look at them and critique me on them. This video is old and the timing is actually pretty crappy. I don't even know why there's so much hype on this video because personally i think its pretty bad compared to what i can do now. the timing and rhythm is off on almost all the riffs

  • U must learn before posting a video...i guess

  • pretty good, but with constant practice is enough said.. There is no such thing as aptitude.. ONly practice..

  • i'v been playing for 6 months and i can do a lot of the stuff your doing. i just can't play pick because i broke my strumming wrist to many times in the right spot. but i play pick pretty good and learned ways arond stuff that would stop a pick player. do you have any tips that could help me be better?

  • How often do you have lessons? You say that you've been playing for 'little over a year' but you seem really good.

  • i got about 7 or 8 lessons. the reason i am so good is because i practice constantly and i also have an aptitude for it more than most people.

  • how many fingers u plucking with. its nice to c someone who doesent slap, its great!

  • how much did that musicman cost you?

  • bought it used $950. Saved up for 3 months being a chamber maid in a crappy hotel. It was worth it.

  • That finger work is awesome, fast and coordinated as hell. Your style reminds me of Steve Harris from Maiden. BTW - a general comment for people seeking tabs. Music doesn't exist on sheets, only in our fusion with our bass. In my opinion it's just as bad as being a "cover song" player...NO Creativity.

  • man do you do base solos in your band, i red your coment to rovers151190 (1 week ago)

  • sometimes. i was telling him that basically because if he was going to take my basslines that i use for my band, he should at least learn them by himself

  • hey can you send me the tabs please...

    ur very good.

  • use your ears. these are used by my band, by the way.

  • Doing good man. Little over a year? Me too. I'm not quite as good as you though, you're a good bit more synchronized with your two hands. Note perfect. Also, a good technique at the end there, with the thumb. Very fast.

  • Ur good , shud b in panic! at the disco, thier bass player sux!

  • Panic! at the disco sucks, not just the bassist, you FUCKING MORON!

  • agreed lol

  • oh grow up, gosh. you were great! Don't listen to them...

    ~Marie

  • plenty o' sweet riffs !

  • nice job. Great Hands.
