"If you want it black and white and I am prepared to give it to you, " Absolutely" your either with the law or your not with the law." - Romeo Dallaire 2008
Ladies and gentlemen, when the world watches Canada, let them watch Romeo Dallaire; let them watch a man who knows that our decisions are felt across this planet; let them watch a man who understands that no human is greater then another human. We are so proud Romeo, Thank you
Meh, if Mr. Kadar wants to take up arms against a foreign nation he is more than free to do so, but we should not be obligated to get involved when he tries to get away with it by holding up a Canadian passport. The U.S. is a foreign state in which we have no say in their internal affairs, in my opinion good riddance we don't want violent individuals like that here anyway, we prefer peace-loving citizens who uphold the laws of this country.
Fuck Jason Kenney for even attempting to smear Sir Dallaire as some kind of terrorist sympathizer! Mr. Dallaire is the very definition of an honourable man.
Man, I hope he runs for Prime Minister... He has the love of the Canadian people, is compassionate to the suffering and isn't afraid to make hard decisions and stay with them... Not too mention, makes Jason Kenny look retarded....not that Jason Kenny needed any outside help.
Jason Kenny , shut up , your an idiot like you dont know anything about war cause you sit on your a** at home and watch the news which half the time cant tell there stories right, so stop talking cause look at Romeo Dallaire , this man can speak! and when he speaks about something hes making his point cleary! This man i would want to see as the next Prime MInister of Canada, This man has all my respect and i wish one day i could meet him and Shake his hand and tell him Thank you for everything !
I met and shook hands with Dallaire at an annual Partners in Research Gala after a PHENOMENAL speech, and I've got to tell you folks, he is nothing short of amazing.
16 years after his solitary desperate fight against the UN and the French government's harrassing obstruction to his saving people's lives in Rwanda and to his alarms on the genocide, here he stands, against all those US rats who try to make people believe they're accomplishing the greatest humanist 's deeds on Muslim people.
Are we embarrassed enough YET by this OUR CANADIAN GOVERNMENT? These people speak like children. Dallaire, and his arguments are indisputable. We have standards in this country, but the conservatives think they can be manipulated when they so choose.
jason kenny is fuckiing lunitic, doesnt not knw wtf hes saying, Would like to see Dallaire as the next Liberal Prime Minister. as far for omar khadar, i think canada has showed the world and that it can not protect its own citizen if caught by the american.
hahaha kenny just got fukd in the ass without lube...I know Khadr has twisted parents who sent him to afghanistan to fight with the taliban, but the fact is that he was a child soldier when he commited the crime(a big fukin "if"), he deserves a fair trial in Canada rather than in Guantanamo where the guy is rotting in hell.
Jason Kenny got his ass handed to him. Romeo Dallaire is one of our greatest Canadians who would know more about human rights after his experiences than any Neo-Con Haper cronie ever would! As much as we need to protect our country from terrorists etc, we still must abide by our extradition treaties when we know full well how the rights of our fellow Canadians are being violated by the Americans in Guantanimo Bay.
@kkamink Romeo Dallaire is a neo-conservative. He wants pretty much that (the) west should be involved in all third world conflicts. But what he do not realize that it is not up to the west to "save" the third world from themselves. In fact, the west did the right thing when it came to Rwanda. Keep away from that conflict. My view is also that NATO would not be involved in the Yugoslavian conflict. There is never a reason do fight other peoples wars.
@crapplepod9 How many will not die in the future? Your argument is built on utlitarianism. Have you ever read Peter Singer? My position is that the more the west are involved the more people die. Next time maybe 2 million will die - maybe western involvments only prelong the suffering and make the conflict even worse?

@ZimmermanHound I find it hard to swallow that you think the west did the right thing. We should not be making decisions for other countries, but we should be stopping them from slaughtering themselves. We can stop them from slaughtering each other, then allow them to decide what to do, without decimating a whole group of people.
@ROBLOXIANgordonrox24 Professor Michael Scheuer was head of the CIA unit that looked for Osama Bin Laden for ten years. He frequently says that if we are going to win the "war on terror" we need to begin kill civilians and and in some cases put up a "white elite" like in SA, But the most effective way to stop terrorism and create political and social stability according to him is to stay out of the third world! No one has to be killed. Just leave people alone he says.
Wittennelm: If I were you, I would not be so quick to argue Western superiority. At the same time that Canadians were fighting to free Belgium for the Nazis (Nazi Germany in and of itself should be enough to remove any smug claims of Western moral superiority), the Belgians were busy committing atrocities in their African colonies, including Rwanda.
acerlutra believe me i'm not arguing western superiority, but i don't see what your comment has to do with this discussion,i was just a poor fool working for a western government at an age where i was easily convinced that governments care about people. But what you say is indeed true. But,to state that Belgians commit atrocities or germans are all nazi is more than generalising,it's racism,Thousands of germans died opposing the nazi regime.you're blaming a population for their governments crimes!
He is responsible for the death of UN soldiers under his command, i challenge him to deny it, WE have witnesses, who no longer have to shut up because they gladly left the military afterwards. May the souls of the 10 massacred Belgian paratroopers hount him forever, GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY
How dare you? The UN (i.e. the rich western and primarily WHITE world) is responsible for the deaths of those brave soldiers and WE should never, ever forget that. The UN failed. Full-stop.
Hont? Perhaps you meant "haunt". And yes, if you read or listen to anything Senator D'allaire has had to say on the matter they do haunt him, as do the souls of 800,000 people he was left powerless to help.
@whenuponhigh,oh getting racist now are we?Yes the UN failed , but were you there?I was. even spoke to dallaire's driver afterwards, yes i mean haunt, the people who i wasn't allowed to help haunt me to!The pakistani battalion who offered to recue them were told to stand down,in situations like these as a force commander you have to take your human responsability, maybe the affair has changed him,but then he should apologise for his cowardness at the time, yes i dare i've seen it with my own eyes
What I say suggests the opposite of racism. I wish to live in a world where every life is valued equally. You mourn 10 brave soldiers who died in the line of duty. I mourn everyone that died or was ruined in that whole horrible mess. That was caused not by Senator DAllaire, but by the western worlds disinterest in stopping it.
Clearly you have contact with this situation. I dont wish to sully your experience in any way. I would love to hear your account of things.
why blame the western world,if they were disinterested, then why did they send troops over there?why did so many give their lives to help the rwandese people, why did we smuggle children out in rucksacks to keep them from being butchered by their own people, why do westerners risk life and limb,to save hutus and tutsis who were killing eachother off like rats, why did western soldiers get courtmartialed for shooting the bastards that were cutting kids to pieces?why did dallaire allow this, why?why?
The blame should fall on the Western world as they had all the necessary resources to prevent the genocide in the first place. Since Rwanda had no strategic or economic value to the West, it was deemed that the lives of Rwandans were insignificant to the point where it would take 10,000 Rwandan deaths to justify the death of 1 Belgian/French/US/etc. soldier.
the only ones to blame are the rwandans, who did not treat their fellow human beings as such, In "Western World " it's even illegal to make a racist remark. Where as In Africa they bucher people because they belong to another tribe, it's even more disgracefull, to blame the only people who ever even tried to stop the madness over there. I did not see one 'westerner" chopping kids to pieces over there, did you??? And how does your sick mind justify any violent death???
You do know that Georges Ruggiu, a Belgian, was convicted for his role in the Rwandan genocide.
The "Western World" never tried to stop the genocide. That is a fact. If you were in fact in Rwanda in 1994 (which I HIGHLY doubt), then you are either the stupidest human being on the planet or in denial.
If you were truly in Rwanda during the genocide, you would know that there was not a Pakistani battalion. Your comments are sickening and based on gross misinformation.
Dallaire was handcuffed by his lack of troops, lack of equipment, and a terribly restrictive UN Mandate. He petitioned the UN on a daily basis for help but was ignored.
Oh were you there then?care to tell me what you saw?And yes forgive me for making one mistake, they were not Pakistani, but does that matter,Would'ya like a confrontation with other eyewitnesses?Do you Dare?it can be arranged, with full press coverage if you like. There was no lack of troops, no lack of equipment, nothing but the people themselves could have prevented that massacre, that's the plain truth, being a General is acting in the field, taking responsability and not petitoning a paper tiger
@wittenelm: Man, they were so low on ammo they couldn't do more than what they've done (protecting some in a stadium). Forget about dallaire's hero trip, he was with teamates and they could report everything.. I saw (in a quebec tv interview) a belgium officer who was with dallaire there and he agreed with him, the belgium soldiers were the only ones having good guns and training but they leaved early
There are myriad villains in the Rwandan genocide, but Dallaire is not one of them. If you want people to blame aside from the interim Rwandan government and their lackeys, blame Boutros Boutros Ghali, Bill Clinton, Francois Mitterand, Jacques-Roger Booh-Booh... blame the US, France, UK and Russia... blame Belgium for pulling their troops out of Rwanda after the 10 soldiers were massacred...
Making Dallaire a senator was one of the best things they ever did. Now if only they'd make him Governor General, and eventually Secretary General of the U.N., I'd be happy.
Really, why do you care about this little, misogynistic, murderous prick? While most teenage boys were joining football teams and fantasizing about Christina Aguilera, this wretched little raghead was joining an organization dedicated to mass-murder (9/11), pederasty (Man-boy Thursdays), squirting acid at schoolgirls' faces and making every woman walk around with bags on their heads. Send this fucker to Afghanistan, for the local authorites to shoot. Better yet, drown him in a vat of pig manure.
Thunderflash, Dallaire made hundreds of decisions which resulted in thousands of lives saved. Those ten soldiers died because they had neither the mandate nor the equipment to defend themselves. They believed in Dallaire, and paid for the bureaucratic bullshit of the UN. Do you believe that you could have done better? What exactly is the extent of your military training? Bear in mind that starcraft doesn't count.
I respect Mr. Dellaire, but how much respect can one really have for a member of our government who was not elected by the people...in my case, very little.
Frankly to me what he's saying here is gibberish. The measures in place in Canada to prevent terrorism are perfectly justified.
Now I do understand his view of comparing child soldiers to Omar Khadr, as frankly if Omar did supposable kill that US soldier he was brainwashed into doing so, and it is sort of immoral to try him.
To start LGEN Romeo Dallaire was a serving member of the Canadian forces who served in Rwanda and saw a breach of human rights that was epic in proportion. Understand that he was given his current position due to his outstanding work for human rights. Try to base your respect on that. It's not a matter of being immoral to try Khadr, it's the fact that basic rights are waived simply because the US doesn't feel like granting them. That's the position he's trying to take.
Toroscot, you said it perfectly here. I agree with you entirely. No civilized nation can start waiving justice, laws & rights & the application of them towards people for some, but not for others, without essentially making those rights of no effect.
Justice, laws & rights are there to protect people FROM this sort of cherry picking by those in power.
Dallaire is a great man, who cares deeply about helping people. Hugs for him!

I did not like the tone used by Mr. Kenny during that segment. Not the best work from Kenny here but other than that, I find Dallaire incredibly naive in trying to save someone (Kadr) who would not hesitate one second to cut his head off in the name of Allah!
I understand your dislike for the Khadr family in general - I share it in fact. But I believe Dallaire's point, apart from speaking generally to the issue of child soldiers, is that Omar Khadr is not beyond rehabilitating.
Typical Liberal? Idiot! There were liberals at the helm when he was calling for help in '94. Political? Hilarious! Speak when you know the man. Reality here is typical, rude, dumb, conservative, Bush loving YankeeDoodleNoodle. Dallaire has bigger balls than vous and is definitely no pussy. He continues to stand up and do what the Can and US governement, and UN for that matter, is afraid to do. Men like him were the kinda men who kicked the asses of ignorant conservative idiots in the year 1812!!
Indeed, we need a 1000 more like Romeo. This little prick below is all over youtube posting shit comments on every Romeo Dallaire video, they don't even know what happened in Rwanda, I know people who were there, it was a no win situation for him, in fact he was ordered to leave, instead he risked his career, his freedom, even his own sanity when he refused the order to abandon his post in Rwanda. The General pleaded for help, nobody came.
Although I listen to the views of a party I tend to vote for the person and not the party. So be it Green, Reform, Conservative, Liberal, it's the person and voice, my area needs as we tend to get get moved to the backburner in the West. Thank you Theo for the video, I consider this one of my favorites. I recently travelled to see Dallaire speak and the man is truely moving to see. Not once did he lean towards any parties politics and his thoughts and comments were well thought out and humble.
Utterly true. Dallaire has it right. You can't choose which laws you want to follow, and when. That contradicts the law and is no better than those who don't agree with law.
Afghanistan, Canada, and USofA all have fair and speedy trail in their constitution, why is it not being followed?
Romeo Dallaire is a true Canadian hero - irrelevant of politics. Every individual who stood for 100 days against the slaughter of the innocent, who risked mind, body and soul in order to bear witness is an inspiration to humanity. It is a disgrace that some individuals have so little patriotism that they mock the service of our veterans in such a manner. We have a volunteer army and the sacrifice of men and women in uniform ought to be respected.
Dallaire couldn't have said it better than he does in this video. Despite having to deal with the condescending prig questioning him, Dallaire didn;t get sidetracked or pulled into a namecalling match - Dallaire made the bottom line about the right of law & its necessity in the world clear as day. We all have a part to play & this stuff affects us ALL.
I'm proud of Dallaire, & proud that he's Canadian. Thank you, TheosQube. More from this program will be appreciated. Favourited.

Dallaire is a Joke. Hes a fucking pussy who is disgrace to canada. He should be the last one to ever critize any other military's actions. He should go back to living in his dream world.

Actually Eilyse, my comments are educated. I know you wouldn't understand since you've never been in the military.
I can't fault Dallaire for the decisions he made since he didn't make any decisions what so ever. An incompetent general to the last and now a liberal senator.
You should read up on the 10 Belgium soldiers he left to die and then tell me how heroic he is.
I would love to know what a more competent general would have done in that situation? Assuming it was even possible to save the 10 soldiers in the first place, he would have put the lives of 300+ people at risk. But I'm assuming you already knew that, since you're educated on the subject.
Thunderflash, are you that simple? Those ten soldiers weren't left to die by Dallaire, but by the UN which failed to equip them properly, provide a mandate that would give them the means to defend themselves. Tactically Dallaire is a genius, his plans were never implemented due to a reluctance on the part of the UN to do so. You really are embarrasing yourself. Have you been in the military?
Dallaire made hundreds of decisions, which saved the lives of thousands of people. Those ten soldiers died because they were not given the equipment or the mandate to defend themselves. They followed the guidelines set by the UN, not Dallaire, and paid dearly for it. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to use them as a method to attack another. They believed in Dallaire enough to pay the ultimate price. What exactly is the extent of your military training? Starcraft doesn't count.

Dallaire is so concerned about rules and laws that he ordered 12 Belgium soldiers under his command NOT to defend themselves or the people they were protecting.
Instead, he ordered them to put down their weapons and surrender.
The soldiers and the civilians they were protecting were then brutally tortured and executed.
There's is nobody on Parliament Hill that can compete with Dallaire on ANY grounds, let alone moral grounds. Don't mess with him, you just come off looking stupid and cowardly.
There is born one Dallaire in centuries in a country. He's an awesome person, Should be the next PM and take Canada to great heights......

There are myriad villains in the Rwandan genocide, but Dallaire is not one of them. If you want people to blame aside from the interim Rwandan government and their lackeys, blame Boutros Boutros Ghali, Bill Clinton, Francois Mitterand, Jacques-Roger Booh-Booh... blame the US, France, UK and Russia... blame Belgium for pulling their troops out of Rwanda after the 10 soldiers were massacred...
scotchtape0 2 years ago
@ scotchtape : your a disgracefull lieer.
I state and confirm following FACTS again : under oath if i have to with dozens of comrades
Dallaire was in charge,
Dallaire was force commander
Dallaire had the power to Act and let us stop or contain the massacre
Dallaire lied about his wareabouts just after the events
Dallaire invoked diplomatic immunity because he was facing charges.
Sctochtape : blame yourself for being so ignorant , don't blame governments and countries who came to help

I believe Romeo Dallaire to be one of the greatest Canadians of our time
leprechaunrapist1986 3 years ago 4
Thunderflash, Dallaire made hundreds of decisions which resulted in thousands of lives saved. Those ten soldiers died because they had neither the mandate nor the equipment to defend themselves. They believed in Dallaire, and paid for the bureaucratic bullshit of the UN. Do you believe that you could have done better? What exactly is the extent of your military training? Bear in mind that starcraft doesn't count.
toroscot 3 years ago 6
I respect Mr. Dellaire, but how much respect can one really have for a member of our government who was not elected by the people...in my case, very little.
Frankly to me what he's saying here is gibberish. The measures in place in Canada to prevent terrorism are perfectly justified.
Now I do understand his view of comparing child soldiers to Omar Khadr, as frankly if Omar did supposable kill that US soldier he was brainwashed into doing so, and it is sort of immoral to try him.
kamster99 3 years ago
To start LGEN Romeo Dallaire was a serving member of the Canadian forces who served in Rwanda and saw a breach of human rights that was epic in proportion. Understand that he was given his current position due to his outstanding work for human rights. Try to base your respect on that. It's not a matter of being immoral to try Khadr, it's the fact that basic rights are waived simply because the US doesn't feel like granting them. That's the position he's trying to take.
toroscot 3 years ago 3
Toroscot, you said it perfectly here. I agree with you entirely. No civilized nation can start waiving justice, laws & rights & the application of them towards people for some, but not for others, without essentially making those rights of no effect.
Justice, laws & rights are there to protect people FROM this sort of cherry picking by those in power.
Dallaire is a great man, who cares deeply about helping people. Hugs for him!
Fondly,
Rachel :)

I did not like the tone used by Mr. Kenny during that segment. Not the best work from Kenny here but other than that, I find Dallaire incredibly naive in trying to save someone (Kadr) who would not hesitate one second to cut his head off in the name of Allah!
mayorelvis2 3 years ago
I understand your dislike for the Khadr family in general - I share it in fact. But I believe Dallaire's point, apart from speaking generally to the issue of child soldiers, is that Omar Khadr is not beyond rehabilitating.
SolesGirlRachelTwo 3 years ago 3
Okay first of all, Romeo Dallaire is a hero for trying to do something about the situation in Rwanda, while Thunderflash was probably in the womb.
Second, Romeo kicks ass for defending Omar as a child soldier.

TheosQube 3 years ago
Although I listen to the views of a party I tend to vote for the person and not the party. So be it Green, Reform, Conservative, Liberal, it's the person and voice, my area needs as we tend to get get moved to the backburner in the West. Thank you Theo for the video, I consider this one of my favorites. I recently travelled to see Dallaire speak and the man is truely moving to see. Not once did he lean towards any parties politics and his thoughts and comments were well thought out and humble.
rhcpb 3 years ago
Utterly true. Dallaire has it right. You can't choose which laws you want to follow, and when. That contradicts the law and is no better than those who don't agree with law.
Afghanistan, Canada, and USofA all have fair and speedy trail in their constitution, why is it not being followed?
BreaButterfly 3 years ago 3
Romeo Dallaire is a true Canadian hero - irrelevant of politics. Every individual who stood for 100 days against the slaughter of the innocent, who risked mind, body and soul in order to bear witness is an inspiration to humanity. It is a disgrace that some individuals have so little patriotism that they mock the service of our veterans in such a manner. We have a volunteer army and the sacrifice of men and women in uniform ought to be respected.
Blackshooter 3 years ago 4
Dallaire couldn't have said it better than he does in this video. Despite having to deal with the condescending prig questioning him, Dallaire didn;t get sidetracked or pulled into a namecalling match - Dallaire made the bottom line about the right of law & its necessity in the world clear as day. We all have a part to play & this stuff affects us ALL.
I'm proud of Dallaire, & proud that he's Canadian. Thank you, TheosQube. More from this program will be appreciated. Favourited.

Dallaire also had the ability to stop the genocide in Rwanda from taking place.
But being a typical Liberal, he showed no backbone and did nothing.

Actually Eilyse, my comments are educated. I know you wouldn't understand since you've never been in the military.
I can't fault Dallaire for the decisions he made since he didn't make any decisions what so ever. An incompetent general to the last and now a liberal senator.
You should read up on the 10 Belgium soldiers he left to die and then tell me how heroic he is.
thunderflash82 3 years ago
I would love to know what a more competent general would have done in that situation? Assuming it was even possible to save the 10 soldiers in the first place, he would have put the lives of 300+ people at risk. But I'm assuming you already knew that, since you're educated on the subject.
seanMayer 3 years ago 6
Thunderflash, are you that simple? Those ten soldiers weren't left to die by Dallaire, but by the UN which failed to equip them properly, provide a mandate that would give them the means to defend themselves. Tactically Dallaire is a genius, his plans were never implemented due to a reluctance on the part of the UN to do so. You really are embarrasing yourself. Have you been in the military?
toroscot 3 years ago 4

@thunderflash82 It was not up to him..he did what he was taught to, UN Peace-keepers don't fight, only unless fired upon first...

Dallaire, thanks for being a typical Canadian pussy!
Because of you, 800,000 Rwandans and 12 Belgium soldiers are dead.
And CBC made a documentary of you? Pathetic.
At least the Canadian soldiers in the Medic pocket stood up and fought trying to stop a genocide from taking place.
You're an embarrassment!
