I drove a 1970 nugget gold W-30 in high school. It was the family car. Wanted a hemi-cuda but the parents said no because the cuda could not have A/C. The car had all options except the clock - Mom said they always broke. Ordered it from Zalud Olds in Shaker Hts Ohio with 3.91 gears even though the brochure said 3.23 only with the A/C option. The salesman said no way but I insisted he turn in the order with 3.91. The factory called the house after 1st talking to the dealer. They wouldn't do it!
hii. i'm a 17 year old female from deep south TX. i have a passion for Oldsmobile but i honestly don't know much, at least not as much as i would prefer. i just started drag racing my daddy's 72 Hurst Olds clone and I've been going off by what he says. But i'm looking to out do him. :D do you have any tips?

I have a super nice 71 442 for sale. Trying to reach 442 lovers in any way possible. You can email me at rthoward17@gmail.com and I can email you pictures and more infomation.
I remember trying up to a 4.66 gear but found the the best was 4.11 to 3.90 top end was incredible, Waibel competition did all of my machine work in the old days, that is Terry Schafer, he was the best! All the old greats like Jerry Dover Sr and Jr, Jim Waibel, Buck Jednek, Buddy Ingersol all the olds guys used Waibel for their machining. Today there are alot of advances in building an olds 455, back then I had a 510 cu big block and I cant wait to get my new one ready.
I used to run 11.00 at 132mph with my 70 442 back in the late 70s I had a 4;33 posi with no hop bars, air bags and 80/20 shocks in the front and 40/60 in the rear and I ran 13inch firestones and later 14 M&H slicks my 60ft times were terrible 2.0 and 1.89 my time came from the half to finish and those times were as quick as some of my buddies running in the high 9s. Just couldnt hook up back then, I am starting on a new project car today and I already put the block in the machine shop.
@kreigsmann no the W-30 was not just a trim option. It was an Olds 455 with higher flowing heads and four barrel carb. Rated at 370 hp but I'm sure they probably produced more.
Slicks or a nice set of radials are the biggest help. Suspension helps before the mini tub was put in it ran best 10.72 with a different motor, stock type suspension with 10.5's, best sixty was 1.40, now best has been 1.37.
@club442 I rebuilt my 70 455 motor with Joe Mondello's parts and instructions, and he said to use VERY WEAK front springs to get the weight transfer to the ass end fast! If you want to make time, of course slicks will be paramount.
But then again, if it's a daily driver, consider other wise!
Mine had the 4:11 rear and a Muncie Rock Crusher... Not very fast , but it got to 90 VERY swiftly, and sucked the air out of the cars next to me! :)
your right their goal was to coast, make bland cars, let competition leave boot prints on their faces, lose 2 American legends in short order, pleasing CUSTOMERS is the way to make money !, they didn't get that ! Gm had unions pull the rug from under them, hence ...way over priced cars, they lost money on problems known for decades. it's ok they got bailed out,too big to fail ? fuck them... they did fail !
It's Norwalk Ohio not Norfolk VA...about 30 miles south of Lake Erie between Sandusky and Cleveland Ohio. By the way this track is about the nicest you can find. Love the place.
This is a real W30 Post. It has 55,000 miles and raced since 1978. The full interior besides back seat and console are in it. All glass, W30 intake & heads, shifter, back seat, bumpers, exhaust right from the manifolds. Full dash, gauges and stock bucket seats & steering wheel are in it. It has a mini tub just like any Super Stocker, biggest tire that is on it without touching the quarters. If Dan Fletcher's Camaro's can be restored than this is no different.
That motor was 40 over, stock crank, eagle h beam rods, arias pistons, edelbrock heads, engle cam, victor intake,1000 demon carb.Best pass with that setup was 10.42.2007 we built a new motor same setup except we put in CP pistons with the narrow ring gap. Some work to the tranny(TH400).In the spring of 07 it went best 10.250 on the 6800 limiter just before the stripe, put a 7000 chip in, did not go quicker and the extra rpm drop the mains and destroyed all bottom end. And damage to the trans as well
For the remainder of 07 and turned out to be 08 we ran a motor that we built in the 70's to run D/Stock Automatic.Bottom end stock crank, rods,TRW pistons.Top end is same as the others,we didn't have anything else. For being probably over carbed and intaked on this setup it went 10.74 in the fall.New motor is at the machine shop right now hope to have it out for the spring, if not for sure before the 09 oldsmobile powered nationals in norwalk
this is reallyyyyyyyyyyy cool got to love the 442's i have 3 and im only 11 years old well kinda there my dads and my gramps BUT thell BE MINE someday

Hi I commented before. I gave you the wrong user address for my 500 HP '68 W30. It's W302GO. I know it is way tamer than yours but still an 11 second car.
During that year it was a 30 over 455, with arias pistons, edelbrock victor intake, edelbrock heads, nodular crank, stock suspension weighed 3580 lbs.
This year changed pistons and put in CP pistons with a 42 thou 1st and 2nd ring, had some work on the tranny done, QA1 coil over shocks all around with TRZ front upper and lower control arms. Best pass to date is 10.250 @ 130.63MPH with a 1.377 60'.
