None of them were allowed to play their instruments in the studio (one of the reasons they finally left Motown), though they very well had the capability to do so. They were allowed to play in some live performances (usually when Jermaine and Tito are not doing the dance steps, they are actually playing), but Gordy was dead set on the session players being the recorded sound on the albums.
