Nolan is one of my favourite directors and this is my favourite film. Now, I know this was only his first full length movie (not including Following) but I like to think these aren't mistakes and were put in on purpose due to the memory theme in the movie... I like to think that...
Dude...WTF...aren't there better things to do with ur life than pick out all the unimportant mistakes that 99% of all people dont see and dont care about?
haha! great review! i love this movie too - didn't notice any of the errors though. I'm still trying to catch up with the finer details of the ending... truly a movie to ponder.
if nolan had made it now, it might have been on a grander scale, with more attention to those tiny errors. wouldn't have been the same though.
Wow, I'm suprised your getting beat up from everyone on here, for "picking on the film". This is of course because MOST people are pre-human with about 60cc's of brain. Just enough to know to release their anus muscles to shit. You my friend, are one smart "Mexican" and tho ur accent bugs me, its nice to know there is ONE smart one in the bunch.
I'm all for getting swept up in a film, but enjoyment of a film can come from allowing the film to instruct you how to feel or from actively engaging in a dialogue with the movie, answering questions by filling in answers you create from the pieces of information given you. Memento is the kind of movie that is never viewed the same way twice; it takes your current mood and conditions etc. to interpret the film, and moods are never the same, I would argue.
Yeah AbraxasGuy I did notice that actually. I kept on making the same assumptions only to have them shaken around again. I think it all goes back to putting you in a mood to further your emersion in the film. By setting it up this way they keep you from thinking about the big picture and just have you focus on what is happening on the screen. Keeps you involved and all. AND I LIKE TO ENJOY MY MOVIES TOO!!
the purpose...abraxas guy...would be so that you can analyze and interpret the movie more clearly. If you are caught up in the mood, then everything you view and understand is through the lens of that mood you are in. yeah it is fun to be put into the mood of a film, but its interesting to note the different viewing experience you would have if you were not in a particular mood.
@ Harpist: Ok, I guess I see your point. But I still don't go see movies just to analyze them...I like to ENJOY my films.
But since we're already over-analyzing this movie, I want to ask y'all about my original post again: Did anybody else notice how the real movie kept making you assume things (I.E, Teddy really killed Lenny's wife) and then going back and just destroying that assumption? The script neglects to give us so much info so we have to make it up ourselves...why did they do that?
By allowing yourself to be put into a certain mood by the film, you will find that the experince of watching it will be much better than if you tired to resist the narration of the film. I think that the beggining segment of this video did exactly that and your understaning would probably be ehanced if you allowed yourself to be put in that mood.
I understand how this seems like it is illuminating Memento by exposing its inconsistencies, but it too is inconsistent in its analysis. Memento is praised from the beginning in its description of the "classy" way in which Lenny kills Teddy, but that claim is not sufficiently supported before moving on to the switching placement of the glasses after the shot. The mixture of praise and critique confuse the audience and muddle the purpose of this youtube film.
Wait. are you really trying to completely write off this entire video just because it "is inconsistent in its analysis."? Seriously?
This video was just meant to point out some flaws in Memento - its not exactly a high-brow analysis of the the movie. And I think the maker of this video did a great job.
You say the maker of the video makes the audience muddled and confused as to the purpose. How? Its pretty clear to me that the purpose is to point out mistakes.
im doing this fiolm in my film studies class, its a proper trick of a movie. I mean apart from the obvious, the way it plays with the non linear narrative and takes the notion of unreliable protagonist to the extreme, i also love the way it plays around with elements of traditional noir.
and i must say that he definately tried to put viewers of this film into a mood by copying things from the beginning. He acted out the opening scene backwards and presented the movie in broken fragments. He was trying to recreate the mood of memento. I didn't get caught up in it though.
Harpist, I think you're def right about getting caught up in the mood of the movie having an effect on you but I'm not sure I agree to the whole becoming the narrator's victim thing.
Yeah you let the narrator hold sway over you but isn't that the point of a movie? I don't know about you, but when I go to a movie I am paying my $10 to get caught up and swept away in a story that's way cooler than my life. Why would I want to escape the mood of the movie. What would be the point of that?
If you get caught up in the mood of memento, then you are like a victim to the narrator. You are left confused throughout the entire film. The guy who made this movie had to watch it a million times to catch all those little mistakes. To catch small details like these and to close read the film he would definately have to not let himself get caught up in the mood. If you are in the mood of the moment, there is like no way you could catch all these small mistakes.
Yeah AbraxasGuy, I definetly realized that when I first watched the movie as well. It's almost like you can never really focus on the narrative as a whole because it jumps around so much. I also noticed how some parts of the movie put you in a mood which effects the way you watch the rest.
Dude, that was really cool...but I'm pretty sure you have way too much time on your hands.
You def destroyed like 50% of the movie's credibility.
I like how the real movie makes you think so many things by showing scenes out of order and then just craps on you and your assumptions...or was that just me?
hi guys...i saw the movie ...but kinda din understand ... so teddy dint kill lenys wife??has lenny already killed the guy...so is it like he keeps killing people once he starts from allover again?? someone pls explain...
Since Lenny can't remember things many people are using him for doing dirty work (f.ex.Teddy is a policeman and is using Lenny for killing common criminals). Now, Lenny killed guy/s which he thought were responsible for his wifes death but does not want to remember it cause he needs a purpose in life. He has no life but chasing the murderer. In the end we can see what he wrote on T's picture and the whole movie makes sense - Lenny needs a victim and once he kills one, he'll find another.
I ***LOVE*** your humor. Great finds and way you relay the info to us. / Personally, I found the movie creepy and the weirdest movie I'd ever seen. / Congrats on your great video.
Now please REVIEW the movie 21 Grams, also shown backwards and also deserves an Oscar.
