The people who posted this are shills for their corporate masters. Mc makes over $2.7 million every 3 days in coffee sales which is what the jury originally awarded. The judge reduced it to 3 times the medical cost. No wonder McD's don't care. There may be frivolus lawsuits out there, this aint one.

Are you kidding me? the coffee woman had suffered third degree burns on her thighs and buttocks, resulting in almost 20,000 dollars in medical bills. The woman originally only asked for enough to cover the hospital, McDonalds offered 800. The coffee that was served was 190 degrees, 50 degrees higher than the standard. McDonalds also admitted that over 700 people reported burns from their coffee and that if it were drunk immediately it would cause burns. Google for pics, the woman deserved more

If you want to know the truth behind case no. 1 and how the facts were manipulated in the media to make out that it was a "frivoulous lawsuit", check out the documentary Hot Coffee. The woman recieved third degree burns over 16% of her body and she never fully recovered from it. She couldn't pay the medical bills so her family tried to get McDonald's to cover it with their insurance, but they insisted on going to court with a jury.

Yes, people may spill their coffee on themselves, and they may get a burn from it, but you would never expect any cafe to sell coffee that was hot enough to cause burns that require skin grafts. Besides, they were only asking for enough money to cover medical bills, which seems pretty reasonable to me, but they refused to pay it and took it to court instead which is why they got so much

They should have to pay all of the expenses of the defendant.. 86% of all frivolous law suits IN FRONT OF A JURY ends in the defenses favor.. but the costs are passed on to the consumers.. So tort reform is necessary.. Lawyers abuse the system.. They MUST know FOR SURE they have a case before ever taking it to court. PERIOD

@SuperGuitarman69 As I said in my other comment, Macdonalds refused to pay the medical costs (which would have come out of their insurance and not actually cost them much). It was their decision to take it to court, which is why they ended up paying so much. So they only have themselves to blame

In all honesty, back when the coffee lawsuit took place McDonalds was still using those flimsy, styrofoam cups. With the tempature of the coffee and the cup, it was eaisly hot enough to begin melting and breaking down the styrofoam. Trust me, I've been burned REALLY badly by hot soup stored in a styrofoam cup and it is dangerous and easy to spill even when you're careful.
