@barnaba1964 im not sure it is, notice DJ's kit as an extra and shinier cymbal, i reckon he got it during the course of these shows. I could be wrong but that's why i think this is the third and not first.
This was the Dorsey Bands' (and the t.v. producers') poor attempt to jazz Elvis up',...they failed! It ended up sounding like a bad movie sound-track to a detective show back then XD
I wished I never saw this footage for I always wanted to see all 6 TV appearances of Elvis on the Dorsey Bros Stage Show & now I regret it for after the solo break on Heartbreak Hotel the swing band is dragging the beat & slowing down & throwing Elvis off. I've never seen such an awful sloppy performance & this was 1956 when Elvis was dangerous on national TV. Elvis always had perfect timing & Scotty, Bill & DJ should've backed him. What did audiences think that were watching this live ?
@WINGGULLSEAGULL I couldn't have said it better or more true than you just did. One can wonder/speculate why Scotty and Bill wasn't on this "Heartbreak Hotel?"
@bellgardens53 Maybe because this is from Feb.11th 1956.Rock n' Roll were something new and "dangerous" on national TV.Elvis and the boys never did the same mistake after that.
@GabelMusic hi how are you i would like to point out that the band is supposed to keep up with the singer not the other way around. so with that truth in mind. Dorsey's band goofed up not elvis. The band tried to do their beat wich was to slow and they were one beat behind youcan tell look at 3:51 even elvis new . but elvis kept going cause he is a great performer. nuff said
@TheRonnie63 GabelMusic is right about Elvis goofing up. If you count along 1,2,3,4 with the music, the band is dead on, Elvis misses his cue to come in after the horn solo. Doesn't mean he sucks, he just wasnt with his usual set up, and he got lost. And to the Dorsey's credit they stayed with Elvis and got back in step with him as quickly as they could and as best they could without letting the whole thing fall apart. A great performer and a great band trying to mix water and oil basically.
@Teenidol83 no the band messed it up! look at elvis performance before and after! elvis was new and the hottest thing then and so dorsey band wanted in on it , now that is the bottom line, andthe band messed up not ELVIS! nuff said
Sorry hoss, like I said, count along with the music, the band plays the song correctly. Elvis got lost in the solo, he plays by feel, they play by charts and counts, sometimes the two dont mix. As far as whos job it is to follow who, doesnt really matter, the song has a count, beats, and measures, and the band is dead on where they should be. Thats just a natural fact. Everything follows patterns. If you dont think Elvis made a mistake listen to the album Elvis Greatest Shits
@Teenidol83 sorry to you hoss but ELVIS DIDNT MESS UP ,LIKE I SAID BEFORE,THE DORSEY BAND TRIED TO GET IN THE GROOVE ( a 50s saying), but couldnt do it . SO THE DORSEY BAND MESSED UP NOT MR.ELVIS PRESLEY NUFF SAID
@TheRonnie63 Well we can only tell you to count along so many times. Best of luck to you in future endeavors. I give up trying to teach basic music comprehension via the YouTube comment section, and admit defeat to you. However clapping along and counting to a song is something they teach in pre-schools across the country, sit in and take a lesson if you've got the spare time.
@TheRonnie63 , You're right! At the end of the 'lead' solo the band chnged the turnaround and came in sooner than Elvis was used to with Scotty's guitar solo! It was the bands re-arrangement of the solo, as they ''jazzed'' it up that made Elvis off with the vocals! And, surprisingly , for Big Band Jazz musicians, when they 'should' have heard what was going on',..hung back a second to synch' back in with Elvis,..but, they didn't,...they just kept plowing through, lol'. NOT ELVIS' FAULT on this!
@TheRonnie63 You said that very well. I to think that the feeling in that song was so hot THAT THE BAND COULD NOT FIND A WAY TO EXPRESS IT. So in trying to find the right notes they fell short of what they wanted to convey. They even tripped up Elvis in there endeavor. But In true fashion Elvis fell right back in step. He had God given gift and ability and rhythm that was out of this world.
this is an error on your dvd..this one is the first show of elvis at stage show....

This clip is so great as Elvis sings along with the big band. So young but already, so brilliant!
