Amazing, so simple yet so intimate. Not many musicians allow us to see how they play in the recording studio. But New Order, as great as it is, goes against that and makes us feel as if we were there, seeing them record that song.
I would SOOOOO much rather watch a video of a group "performing" their craft in an intimate set like this than watch a bunch of nonsensical lame storytelling. the concentration of their faces is priceless.
@Mitsimad It's not really the old people, that hate, because the old people don't even listen to today's music. I work with a lot of 18 to 25 year olds in a job skills institute and THEY complain about the quality of today's music themselves. Folks are craving for substance again. Either in the lyrics or in the musical quality itself. Lyrics are so lame and superficial and the same goes for today's beats, lame and instant. all sounds like it was cooked in the same microwave.

I think the best bit about this amazing film clip is after the music has ended: the looks they give the camera and each other personify exactly what New Order was at that time and is still magic to me now so many years later…
@bobbycarolina75 I see your point & entertained it. But NewOrder is not in the class of the (pardon me) shit crap you describe so therefore your point is mute. I suggest a Music History class.

This is the first time i have seen this video since it's original release. I've got goose bumps on goose bumps! What an immensly cool band and such a beautiful song. Still looking for that perfect kiss x
Everytime I look at a video older than 10 years, there's always some carmudgeon who'll say something like "yeah, back in those days there were 'good musician', that was before the corporate creations of justin bieber...blah blah". It's getting really tired. As if creations like Bieber are something new. 10 years ago it was Brittney Spears, before that the Backstreet Boys, go back to the 70s there's Leif Garrett. Music is also subjective, someone else's favorites might not be yours and vice versa
@bobbycarolina75 - Then there's the thought, like the second highest rated comment (at the moment anyway) that it's somehow wrong for people to not like the music that they do. Contrary to their belief, the world would not be a better place if everyone liked the same music. There'd be no contrast. Things would get really stale really fast. I don't listen to Justin Bieber, but it's fine that people listen to him. Nobody's forcing me to listen to him.
@bobbycarolina75 There's subjectiveness and there's shit. All those people you quoted are products designed to sell. There is a difference. But I agree, there has always been crappy money grabbers, since we started banging bones on trees.
@bobbycarolina75 It's important to remember, also, that the best artists of any time period were usually not the most popular artists of that period. The most popular ones are often inconsequential, and they usually end up getting swept under the rug and largely forgotten. So for all who hate Justin Bieber's music despite its popularity, chin up. No one will care about him in 10 years (and maybe less!). Plus, if you don't like it, turn off the radio. No one's making you listen.
This track develops like nothing else, from perfect, to perfect, then perfect, then... perfect. I can not understand how my colleagues are not able to get past 10 second mark... I thought I am the only one remembering this, but thank you all for the recent comments. :-)
@Nieghorn this isn't techno, it was a phase of new wave where keyboards were prominently featured, but other than the electronic sound of the synthesizer there is no relation to 'techno' which uses samples, looping and computer preprogramming
Almost 30 years and this song still sounds interesting and not even all that dated. Blows away most modern synth stuff out there. What a legendary band.
Saw Peter Hook last night with his band the light doing a recital of CLOSER on the anniversary of Ian Curtis's untimely death. The set was superb and the renditions od Atmosphere, Novelty, These Days and Isolation are something that will remain with me forever - I hope some of you get the chance i have had to see this genius over the years since 1980
i dont like the dance stuff as much as early new order and joy division but this song is still a very good song the bass is fonominaly good love u hooky
reminds of 1984 or `85 whenever this came out. I bought the single (45 rpm - anybody even know what those are these days?) at the only alternative record store in Chicago at the time, Wax Trax on N Lincoln Ave. Then shortly therefore I met the love of my life, Susan from the UK. Oh those were happy times...
Always loved this ever since I saw it as a kid. Someone once said the dude backlit in the doorway was supposed to be Ian Curtis' ghost. If so, he's not dancing hard enough!
American music critics have never given synth rock (for lack of a better term) any respect. So groups like New Order never got the cred they deserved in the sates. Despite that people loved their music once they got to hear it.
@Dalessiokiller New Wave covers a pretty wide variety of things, but New Order are a pretty good archetypal example of all of the good things about it. New Wave was basically an evolution of punk, moving away from traditional RAWK AND ROLL stuff into a wider variety of musical styles.
I thought I was going to see a 10 minute make out session but no..

reminds of 1984 or `85 whenever this came out.

@shoegazerjoy Not sure what drum machine Steve used on this song, but I programmed this into my Boss Dr220 and it sounded great.

American music critics have never given synth rock (for lack of a better term) any respect. So groups like New Order never got the cred they deserved in the sates. Despite that people loved their music once they got to hear it.

@merkury06 Agreed. My parents called it "New wave" back in the 80's. I'm not sure if that's an industry term or just a NY 80's one.

@Dalessiokiller New Wave covers a pretty wide variety of things, but New Order are a pretty good archetypal example of all of the good things about it. New Wave was basically an evolution of punk, moving away from traditional RAWK AND ROLL stuff into a wider variety of musical styles.
