  • Ben, I'm impressed. I've seen other students do much worse with Chai in this 4-count drill. I know you're proud and honored to have been given the opportunity.

  • Does Ajarn Chai still teach at Danny Inosanto's Martial Arts school. I know he use to Danny had brought in various martial arts master to teach at his school.

  • I'm not sure if he still does, but I do know that they are good friends. I got to train with both of them at a camp in Oregon this year. It was a great experience and I really learned a lot.

  • oh...and if you don't move around, he'll step on your foot and use you as a punching bag. :p lol.

I remember a seminar in a room with mirrors, I dropped my hands when he turned around and he CRESCENT kicked me in the jaw. So...now whenever I see him, my hands are always up, either in wai or on guard. I keep my hands in "respect" continuously throughout the seminar. Ajarn is cool. Watch your food around him, though. He will poison you with hot sauce.

  • what's a crescent kick? (yes noob)

  • it's like a kick delivered with the foot in an elliptical motion. it's not very typical in muay thai, and is much more prevelant in other stand up martial arts...but ajarn didn't seem to uncomfortable pulling it out of thin air to smack me for being off task. It was like a spinning cresent kick...he was facing the other people, saw in the mirror I wasn't keeping my hands up, and foot slapped me. (he has excellent control...if he wants to, I'm sure he would've floored me if he so pleased).

  • I went to a seminar with Ajarn Chai back in 1987. First time I had trained with him. I dropped my hands and he shin kicked me in the face. I have never forgotten that, and I always keep my hands up because of that day.

  • Ajarn is way, way too fast. I always try to just go steady and keep good form, and always bring my hands back quick. Still, he always caught me almost every other time with the left after I threw my cross.

  • The nice thing about the way Chai holds for this drill is how you never know what he might throw at you, out of the blue. That's a little scary, of course, but doing the drill this way means the student will be better prepared for the ring/street.

  • I've been there with Chai before. You've got to slow down and try to react rather than anticipate on your bob and weave. That's why he kept stopping the combo (I know b/c he's done it to me too). It's better to go slow and learn to really react and be spontaneous than go for speed and cheat yourself by trying to anticipate the holder's counter-punches. Gook luck and keep training!
