  • Soft Cell - Tainted Love

One of my favorite hits from the 80s!

  • Forget focusing on what station Mr. Kent played for, I was still stuck on you did not address him by his full proper name, Herb Kent the Kool Gent!!!

  • I'm inspired to do my own "videography" now, since I'm in none of the Rink Zone pictures AND apart of the original Friday Nite Audio squad on WKKC! Great work Leonard :)

  • I love House music for ever!!

  • Frankie shit is slammin ck Hatchett clocses thing to Ron RIP .. Che

  • Not bringing in the race card..But they were saying that whites are the ones who started House Music! Coming from Chicago (Frequently visited the Factory) and growing up with House I never thought that to be true. But I wasn't 100% for sure. Even though House Music transcends black and white...but we are always the Pioneers! Good History of House..the truth be told! Now Techno is a different story. That's not real House...that's just noise!

  • @MrJoskiLove The music that came to be known as techno actually started in Detroit, then went to Europe where it became "techno"-techno. White people didn't start house-lol. Larry Levan was asked to bring what he was doing in the NY clubs to the Chi in the mid to late 70s. Levan asked his boy Frankie Knuckles. And Knuckles went instead. From my digging, house and hip-hop came from the same tree. NY Mobile DJs in the late 60s and 70s.

  • @MrJoskiLove Mobile DJs Flowers (opened up for James Brown in 1969), Maboya, King Charles but the biggest appears to be Pete DJ Jones, who was killing the clubs in the late 60s early 70s. These were the cats who inspired Levan, Flash, Herc, Knuckles, DJ Divine, Hollywood...etc. And they all played the same records. Herc and the Bx cats emphasized the heavier James Brown- "break" type joints. Check Founding Fathers preview on YouTube. BTW Levan, Jones, ...etc are all Black-lol

  • @clh2192 Seems like everyone just wants a piece of this history. As for me, Im just glad it happened and dont really care how it did, Djing has kept me out of so much trouble, given me so much and been a part of my identity since I was very young. House music is what Ive come to love and the Frankie Knuckles, Louie Vegas, BadBoyBills, Tony Humphries and all the others of the world, known and unknown, I feel deeply grateful for. From my house to yours, keep the soul alive! And the beat goes on!

  • @clh2192 It don't matter who started it,all of it is american music,or western music for euro's.We make a terrible mistake when we attach race to something that belong to the masses, beside that go's against the hold message of unity'

  • @sojampix112nyc Can't cosign on that. Just stating the facts. Did you respond to JoskiLove's original comment? No disrespect-lol- But I only hear comments like yours when Black people try to get the real story out there.

  • Now i know where Warner music got/stole there logo from

  • You sure did your homework!!!

  • @Karenshubby47 no homework required, I lived this. All on this video is from memory only.

  • GOOD TO KNOW THE TRUE... AND HEAR THIS VERSION OF THE HISTORY. SAME HAPPENS WITH OTHER MOVEMENTS LIKE PUNKS, HIP HOP AND MANY MORE.

  • Whats the name of the song that starts at 2:02 with the woman singing?

  • At 3:25, pic with Ron Hardy & Rob WIlliams, isn't that Reggie (Way We Were) in front?

  • @djliljohnwgci Yep, that's Him, ain't changed much over the years. The brother is aging good.

  • on the QUARTZ album, what is the name of that cut with the piano??

  • @freakyckb "Beyond The Clouds"

  • It's great that the credit for House music is gettin out to the proper peeps. I was 11-12 when the gerneration started commin up. People were more into each other then and all shared one common trate and that was the fuffillment of good dance music. Ppl were havin parties in basements of their homes and the clubs were off the hook. One lost element of House music though came from Acid Jazz. Acid Jazz was mostly instumental and a great rhthym to sample. Bringin it back... VRP...INC.

  • Yeah that sounds like Tom Moulton Mix. That was made for the NY dance scene. NY got roots in this!!!

  • Any way I can get a track id?

  • First Choice - Dr. Love (12'' remix by Shep Pettibone) First Choice - Dr. Love (Original Tom Moulton 12" Mix)

both interesting remixes, but i think this one here is a little bit touched up

  • I remember the parties at the Rink I might be in the picture somewhere I miss those days lol! I was there every Saturday Night forget skating I was partying!

  • What was that white label with the bad pressings that was out in the 80s. Had a lot of stuff from the 70s on it. Wait.. I think it was LOST RECORDS? Right?

  • I don't know. I don't even like deep house music (I'm into the offshoots but have come to appreciate 'house'). If that was the only thing still out there, I would not have gotten into the dance scene. It all boils down to: how old are you (I mean, if you are as old as some of those pioneers, you are well preserved); how many people remember you (that you influenced), etc. In the end, though, it is basically electronic disco (which also has its antecedents).

  • amazin stuff....thanks for the reminisance!!

  • You can still hear Herb play these songs saturdays and sundays on v103 you can hear MARTIN CIRCUS just about anytime hes on air JACKING LIKE A BIG DOG!!!!

  • Now why would i get 2 thumbs down for speaking the truth!

  • Thanks for giving Herb Kent his Props!

  • I have 3 copies of the party album, and could have had an acetate of "time to jack", i was at chip's moms house buying a small collection of chips old records and his mom was going to give it to me, but i didn't feel right taken it. Think i'm lying it's on 87th just east of king drive. His mom is a really nice person.

  • Shoot never mind man NOW I saw your "cliff note" lol... If it's any consolation to redeem myself I'll add that Pervis the Blues Man came on after unk cause I was at the station with him at times (I still have the original Visage album from the station). and the person who asked the name of that song it's "FREQUENCY" and I still pump it in certain sets lol. Hope to connect whicha soon.Jesse and I been in contact as well as Farley. Like I said earlier do ya thang man!

  • Thanks, I figured out the Visage song title a few months ago...it has a real nostalgic feel for me.

  • Hey Leonard long time & you probly wouldn't remember me anyway but keep doin ya thing. I'm one of the South Side dj's of your time as well & Herb's nephew (he he) but he was on XFM before V... still spinnin just like UNK and he was the first one to let me spin on air on his punk out show & I'm now a radio jock in his footsteps. Thanks for givin him props! :0)

  • This takes me back. I used to wait to tape a song off of WBMX and would be pissed because they would play a mix instead.

My parents listened to WVON all the time. Thanks for the memories.

  • its crazy how chi town went from blues to house then to juke lol

  • i should know this, but what is the visage song played in this clip?

  • its an extended version of tainted love by soft cell

  • Your videos bring memoric tears to my eyes. It was a sheer pleasure to have met you in kuwait. Headed back to the box in December bro.

  • theres actually a special mix of dr love on twelve inch single from salsoul thats still available

  • MAN TIGHT ASS POST SON!!!

  • Let them distort the truth... all they do is run with the history and try to make it theirs anyway. Let them think what they want. They aint really house!

  • nice video, very nice, thank you for creating that!

  • "tainted love" i knew that rihanna jacked that track!!! well at least her producer did!!!

  • Hello,

Can someone tell me what that dr love track is playing at 3 minutes and throughout?

    Thank you.

  • first choice. "doctor love"

  • yeah but what version?

  • Thanx for posting tha truth!

  • Hi Leonard, this is Jane Koala, thank you for the videos and being one of the pioneers who influenced to many! Peace be with you.

  • Dang, Be still my heart Tears TEARS. I love that... from a Chi Lantian Female that will never let House Die. It brought an emotion that you only understand if you partied at THE BOX, SAWYERS, IGLOOS, REDS, WAREHOUSE, AKA, THE ATLETIC CLUB, THE CONGRESS, BISMARK AND MORE...

  • its funny how close i was to all of this when it was happening and didnt realize how big it would be 27 years later. I actually gave Jesse ideas on several tracks back in the day. He came up to camp to visit a few times and then blew up !

  • That being the case, you should be included in all this too. We DJ's would be nothing without the people that supported us AND THAT IS REAL. DJ's that got a case of the BIGHEAD have completly forgot that. I always HAD a big Ego with my peer DJ's but I was always humble as of the people that came to the parties because......if it werent for them, there would be no me and i'm glad that people still got love for me.

  • you know its good to see the history of the music as im from chicago as well im the cousin of gene hunt you know i wish someone would do a follow up on the children of the dj's who have now grown up and are making damn good tracks but are not being heard cause i believe its through them that this music will survive besides it was some of us who were lil shortys back in the day and we were present during the time that some of those tracks were made in the basement

  • I grovelled for that Chip E back when.Never got it to this day.Peace man...keep the great vids flowin.

  • Leonard my man you have done it again!! Seeing this slide show bring back so many good memories.. You riht about that Jessie saSaunders, the original Fantasy and On ana On were released on Mithbal Records, 1984.. I had copies myself. Do you think you will put out a classic Chicago House mix CD?? Keep up the good work, and most of all keep it truth... Eric
