All three are international role models for excellence in sport and in life!!! Remember, these three were the fastest men IN THE WORLD on that date in the 200m race!!! Mr. Norman, MUCH RESPECT!!! R.I.P. and Thank you, sir!
He threw away a potential high 19.5-low 19.6 with that celebration. Lmao. But given the circumstances, I would of thrown my damn hands up too. ;-). Still an amazing moment in Olympic, American and Black history.
@Justinglewis Thank u Justin a friend told his identity and did some more digging he was a former NCAA Champ from Stanford no less at the 100m distance in '63 and he tied tthe 200m mark at the time held by him and Tommie Smith
@tommiesmith1983 Thank you sir your a great man who was denied the right to continue what would have been an outstanding career.Burn in hell Avery Brundidge
Wow! Tommie Smith ran the last 40 like he was on fire. Norman finished well too, but Carlos died. Odd commentary. His focus was Norman throughout the race, must have said his name five times in 20s, but clearly was looking at the wrong people, barely mentioning Smith bursting through and then not even knowing whether Norman was second or third.
Just read about Peter Norman- what a hero. And the way he was treated for his stand was an absolute disgrace. And for not sending him to the 1972 Olympics, those involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. He was only making a stand for what needed to be said. Quite ironic when noticing how the Olympic authorites have dicated to China with this Olympics!
I remembered Tommie Smith's unbelievable run as a 10 year old. The ceremony went over my head until I learnt about it as an early teen.
It's with great embarrassment that I have to admit that I only researched Peter a few years before his sad passing. I was heavily involved in the sport as a sprinter in my youth in Britain and now I want to share this great work from Matt with my daughter who like Peter is Green and Gold. Congrats on your brilliant project.
Here's a trivia question for you : Who was the third American, along with Smith and Carlos, to run in the 1968 200m final? Answer: Stanford graduate LARRY QUESTAD, who finished 6th with a time of 20.62.
Australia's Olympic authorities reprimanded him and the Australian media ostracized him. Despite qualifying 15 times for the 100m and five times for the 200m during 1971/72 the Australian Olympic track team did not pick Norman for the 1972 Summer Olympics. That year was the first ever where no Australian sprint team went to the Olympics.
They were demonstrating against racism in America. It wasn't the America that we know with the ipod's and Youtube but a different America that discriminated against blacks, Native Americans, women and the lot. You would be very afraid if you went back to that era.
As late as 14.3 seconds, John Carlos is actually leading in the race. Then he spends a little too much time looking around, and Norman blows right past him.
I think Peter Norman definitely deserved more credit than he got during all this , because whereas Smith and Carlos were protesting what was goin' on in their own country, Norman, as a foreigner, stood in solidarity with them wearing the same patchthat Smith and Carlos were wearing. I think that was brave on his part
Both Carlos and Smith were pall-bearers at Norman's funeral in October 2006. What is less known is that Norman, donned a badge on the podium in support of their cause, the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR). It was also Norman who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves used in their salute, after Carlos had left his gloves in the Olympic Village. This is the reason for Tommie Smith raising his right fist, while John Carlos raised his left.
Tommy Smith and John Carlos NEVER had their medals taken from them. They both have their medals at home with them where they have been since they received them.
Smith's run was amazing. He raised his arms in celebration some 20 meters from the finish! Imagine what time he might have run if he'd run through the finish.
they did not deserve to get their medals stripped. They were making a political statement that they were america's heroes for the olympics, but when they got home they were treated like dirt. I think instead they should be honored in addition to receiving their medals because they had to put up with the crap at home, and decided that they were going to take a stand for their rights.
They were not treated like dirt because they were black, they were treated like dirt because they showed disrespect to their country. They deserved what they got.
Disrespect to the same country where they were called NIGGERS and were forced to live in a SEGREGATED society where they would be treated like THIRD-CLASS CITIZENS upon their return back. NO DISRESPECT AT ALL, THEY PROTESTED THE INJUSTICES AGAINST BLACKS IN AMERICA!
how ignorant a comment!! can you think for yourself? Their country had more than embarrassed itself for instituting first slavery, then Jim Crow laws and even by 1968, unabashed racism, hatred and discrimination toward one group of people based on their skin color - while all the while claiming to be the 'land of the free' with 'freedom and justice for all', etc etc. Your point then, is baseless and ignorant!
YES SIR!!!! Coming from someone born and bred in the South. The picture of Mr. Smith and Mr. Carlos hangs in my living room. Much to the disdain of my very Rebel father. RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, John Carlos really faded in the last 60m. At 0:23, he is still in first, about 5m ahead of Norman.
ddenuci 3 years ago 2
The final official time was 19.83 due to the automatic timing being put on a 0.05 sec delay.

19.78seconds back in 1968 with a 20m celebration! This man could go 19.4 in our time right now. Maybe even beat Johnsons 10.32

15m with arms aloft is pretty impressive! Does anyone have Carl's 200m run from TAC '83 which also ended in celebratory waving?
