  • All three are international role models for excellence in sport and in life!!! Remember, these three were the fastest men IN THE WORLD on that date in the 200m race!!! Mr. Norman, MUCH RESPECT!!! R.I.P. and Thank you, sir!

  • they look fast out of the block

  • these shots do sprinters speed more justice, its funny how carlos kept looking round to the wrong side hehehehe

  • holy SHIT these guys are FAASSSTTT!!!!

  • why have I never heard of Peter Norman? I love athletics and I'm Australian.

NO ONE has run faster in this country yet.

  • He threw away a potential high 19.5-low 19.6 with that celebration. Lmao. But given the circumstances, I would of thrown my damn hands up too. ;-). Still an amazing moment in Olympic, American and Black history.

  • @1968Olympix Hey Olympian there was a white American sprinter in this historic final who was he just curious?

  • @dal4018 Larry QUESTAD

  • @Justinglewis Thank u Justin a friend told his identity and did some more digging he was a former NCAA Champ from Stanford no less at the 100m distance in '63 and he tied tthe 200m mark at the time held by him and Tommie Smith

  • @Justinglewis Thank you sir.

  • @dal4018 it was larry questad

  • @tommiesmith1983 Thank you sir your a great man who was denied the right to continue what would have been an outstanding career.Burn in hell Avery Brundidge

  • Wow! Tommie Smith ran the last 40 like he was on fire. Norman finished well too, but Carlos died. Odd commentary. His focus was Norman throughout the race, must have said his name five times in 20s, but clearly was looking at the wrong people, barely mentioning Smith bursting through and then not even knowing whether Norman was second or third.

  • the 200 is a way better race than hundred

  • first person to break 20 seconds

  • @esquimalt1 No the first person to break 20 secswould be John Carlos 19.19 Usain Bolt 2009-08-20

    19.32 Michael Johnson 1996-08-01

    20.14 Tommie Smith 1967-06-17

    20.36 Henry Carr USA 1964-10-17

  • my names peter norman :) but im not very quick

  • Thank you for posting this primary source video that I needed.

  • Peter Norman's time is still an Australian record and would have won him gold in Sydney.

  • Just read about Peter Norman- what a hero. And the way he was treated for his stand was an absolute disgrace. And for not sending him to the 1972 Olympics, those involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. He was only making a stand for what needed to be said. Quite ironic when noticing how the Olympic authorites have dicated to China with this Olympics!

  • It's kind of ridiculous how much the announcer is focusing on Norman.

  • Australian runner, Australian announcer. What'd you expect?

  • I remembered Tommie Smith's unbelievable run as a 10 year old. The ceremony went over my head until I learnt about it as an early teen.

It's with great embarrassment that I have to admit that I only researched Peter a few years before his sad passing. I was heavily involved in the sport as a sprinter in my youth in Britain and now I want to share this great work from Matt with my daughter who like Peter is Green and Gold. Congrats on your brilliant project.

  • I think we are all missing the bigger picture here.....

Tommie smiths pants are way too high.

  • lol.. you idiot...but...i must agree....now lets focus on this very important aspect.

id also like to bring up the socks at a later point in time if i may?

  • According to John Carlos he let Smith win.

Looks to me more like he just ran out of gas.

  • Here's a trivia question for you : Who was the third American, along with Smith and Carlos, to run in the 1968 200m final? Answer: Stanford graduate LARRY QUESTAD, who finished 6th with a time of 20.62.

  • Wow, John Carlos really faded in the last 60m. At 0:23, he is still in first, about 5m ahead of Norman.

  • The final official time was 19.83 due to the automatic timing being put on a 0.05 sec delay.

  • 19.78seconds back in 1968 with a 20m celebration! This man could go 19.4 in our time right now. Maybe even beat Johnsons 10.32

  • 15m with arms aloft is pretty impressive! Does anyone have Carl's 200m run from TAC '83 which also ended in celebratory waving?

  • watch?v=Osc1TZ8-4UI

  • Last 15m with arms up is pretty impressive! Does anybody have Carl's TAC '83 200m where he too started celebrating some 20m out?

  • Australia's Olympic authorities reprimanded him and the Australian media ostracized him. Despite qualifying 15 times for the 100m and five times for the 200m during 1971/72 the Australian Olympic track team did not pick Norman for the 1972 Summer Olympics. That year was the first ever where no Australian sprint team went to the Olympics.

  • We must understand the time that happened.

They were demonstrating against racism in America. It wasn't the America that we know with the ipod's and Youtube but a different America that discriminated against blacks, Native Americans, women and the lot. You would be very afraid if you went back to that era.

  • As late as 14.3 seconds, John Carlos is actually leading in the race. Then he spends a little too much time looking around, and Norman blows right past him.

  • I think Peter Norman definitely deserved more credit than he got during all this , because whereas Smith and Carlos were protesting what was goin' on in their own country, Norman, as a foreigner, stood in solidarity with them wearing the same patchthat Smith and Carlos were wearing. I think that was brave on his part

  • Both Carlos and Smith were pall-bearers at Norman's funeral in October 2006. What is less known is that Norman, donned a badge on the podium in support of their cause, the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR). It was also Norman who suggested that Smith and Carlos share the black gloves used in their salute, after Carlos had left his gloves in the Olympic Village. This is the reason for Tommie Smith raising his right fist, while John Carlos raised his left.

  • He was also protesting against the Australian government's treatment of blacks in his own country...

  • @cassleung2007 When Norman passed away both Smith&Carlos were pall bearers at his funeral

  • I've heard of one-eyed commentary, but really...

Still, all three medallists were wonderful.

  • Tommy Smith and John Carlos NEVER had their medals taken from them. They both have their medals at home with them where they have been since they received them.

  • Smith's run was amazing. He raised his arms in celebration some 20 meters from the finish! Imagine what time he might have run if he'd run through the finish.

  • Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at Norman's funeral

  • where did you get this?

    Thanks for posting

  • From Peter himself.

  • They deserved to have their medals stripped for embarrassing their country.

  • they did not deserve to get their medals stripped. They were making a political statement that they were america's heroes for the olympics, but when they got home they were treated like dirt. I think instead they should be honored in addition to receiving their medals because they had to put up with the crap at home, and decided that they were going to take a stand for their rights.

  • They were not treated like dirt because they were black, they were treated like dirt because they showed disrespect to their country. They deserved what they got.

  • Disrespect to the same country where they were called NIGGERS and were forced to live in a SEGREGATED society where they would be treated like THIRD-CLASS CITIZENS upon their return back. NO DISRESPECT AT ALL, THEY PROTESTED THE INJUSTICES AGAINST BLACKS IN AMERICA!

  • how ignorant a comment!! can you think for yourself? Their country had more than embarrassed itself for instituting first slavery, then Jim Crow laws and even by 1968, unabashed racism, hatred and discrimination toward one group of people based on their skin color - while all the while claiming to be the 'land of the free' with 'freedom and justice for all', etc etc. Your point then, is baseless and ignorant!

  • YES SIR!!!! Coming from someone born and bred in the South. The picture of Mr. Smith and Mr. Carlos hangs in my living room. Much to the disdain of my very Rebel father. RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rdangelo, you are yourself an embarassment to mankind.

  • @rdangelo Hey Dangelo they had a reason for doing what they did and I for one am glad they did CARLOS&SMITH4EVER!!!!!!!!
