I own the swedish kit and wonder if the german pot will fit in the swedish stove?
I like to carry an extra fuel bottle, a small measuring set, soap, an abrasive pad and that wont fit in the swedish kit due to it already being stuffed with the burner, utensils, primary fuel bottle and napkins, not to mention the stove would be more usefull if others could use it too on camping trips (this has been the case before)...
I love my swedish mess kit. Mines also stainless steel, as well as I do have an east german aluminum mess kit. Doesn't even compare. I also have a west german bundeswher mess kit which is vastly superior to the east german set up. Good video
I have carried the German kit and have used it many times. I keep a couple of small Nagene bottles, a small 3M scub pad and a vary small bottle of dish soap in side it. Vary handy! The bail handle is useful for boiling water of a fire. Thanks for posting you video!
I'm sorry to say, that the 'East' German kit is actually a bundeswehr (former West Germany) kit. The real East German NVA Feldgeschirr (mess kit) was 2 pieces. Thanks for the video!
What type of paint is used to coat the outside of the pot and pan on the Swedish Mess Kit? These were used so many years ago I was wondering if the paint was leaded or even carcinogenic when placed on an open fire ... Would it be better to strip the paint from them? Would that hinder their efficiency to cook food/boil water or would it not matter?
the swedish is better because its stainless steel, aluminium has links to altzeimers. pluss u can turn thewind shield upside down and use as a hobo stove
Those mess kits are to heavy for me. I use a mini trangia with a homemade potstand. The potstand is made from a can. It is not lightweight. It nests inside a titanium bowl inside a 1 quart stainless pot. And alcohol or methanol (gas line antifreeze) is easy to find.
You're right, you have the stainless version. The aluminium one is much lighter. The full trangia kit comes with a fuel bottle and a plastic kuksa (to use as a cup) as well as the stove you have in the video. Nice comparison though.
I have a Russian one with a small canteen, a pot and a pan. They fit nicely however I've yet to buy a stove.
Since I have type 1 diabetes I'm not able to go bushwhack but I still spend lots of time outdoors. And let's face it, after a long day airsofting there's nothing like a spam sammich with Swiss cheese.
I run heavy equiptment way back in the mountians of W V . And have the swiss one that i have used religiously !! cooking right on the track in the dead of winter !! Works great !!! If you want to cook fast , i use break line antifreeze ,burns white hot !! Just watch it will be lit ,but you wo'nt see the flames ,5 min. s and its boiling!! SWISS !!!
I have the Swiss Cook Kit, Worked well during a Bug Out with my sons. The only down side about the kit is that it's bulky and heavy to pack in a med. Alice pack. Otherwise it's everything you need in a mess kit. $10.00 from an Army Surplus store.
Regarding the Swiss mess kit and im sure the German, you can cook two foods at one time. I have cooked rice in the lower pot and with the upper pot on top I there was ample heat from the steam to cook sausage in the top and when done just mix them together.
This is a fantastic kit. I wish I could find a pouch for it.
Did East Germans actually make any of these "East German" surplus on the market or is it all Soviet imports? I have a small East German backpack with rain color that is made with very piss poor materials...Swedish or Swiss stuff is just so much better...but the British stuff is really the bench mark...
@Microglia1 Don't know what kind of specimen you have, but my NVA assault backpack with rain camo is excellent. Durable, doublestitched straps, robust and does what it is supposed to.
I have both these bits of kit. They are both great and work well. The way I use the German kit is with a Swedish army trangia windshield and a Svea burner. it works as well as the trangia set up. The only thing I don't like about it is that as it has the extra pot in it you can't sore the trangia fuel bottle in it as well as the burner. But it does has the extra pot. It's down to what suits you best I guess. I have a video of me cooking pasta on it if you look at my videos. Hope that helps.
Informative video. Would you see the east german mess kit being useable with the trangia stove/windscreen? As in would the "boiling pot" of the german mess kit fit okay inside the windscreen to use for boiling etc? thanks!
The Swedish stove is very practical. I'd recommend having the trangia and alcohol bottle stored outside (not to my taste buds liking anyway), and instead filling it with fork/spoon/knife and food.
As for the frying pan, one might want to remember having the hoops on the handle up when using since it makes poking e.g. a stick through it to lift it of easier :)
I've been using that E. German kit on all my camping trips lately and it's VERY handy and light. You can store utensils and even some food inside it because it is spacious. After putting it on the fire a few times the green paint starts to get scorched and it begins to rub away when you scrub the pan. The inside is very durable and the covers are very useful because it keeps ashes out of your water / soup/ whatever.
Good job, you save me a lot of time testing, I spend a lot of my time in the desert or the woods, most the time on a motorcycle, I demand comfort and you help,. Thank you.
in bidding on one right now, wining an hour hopefully, for 20$ and 13$ shipping, how do you get your stuff so cheap off ebay. By the way they sell the swedish cook kit for about 40-45$ on ebay too.
You just use a special pure alcohol, but there is different kinds that work better then others, I have one of these burners at home, they are great, but looks like you are getting ripped off if they cost 40-45$, in sweden they cost half of that, and that's the brand new ones.
Both look to be good kits. Is the EGA kit aluminum? An ounce in the car feels like a pound on the trail. It's super easy to build a alcohol stove out of aluminum cans and a wind screen out of a big coffee can, but the Trangia set appears, as the Brits say, "bombproof". If I have to carry it on my back every day I'll choose the The EGA and build my own stove & screen. If I want something to stick in the back of a truck for emergencies I'll take the Trangia.
What is intended to latch it closed? I can't figure it out. It's driving my uncle crazy. Also, why are there 2 notches in the handle? I know what the one in the center is for but how about on the side? Just curious about the design specs of this thing.
Actually the East German Army Mess Kit is just that, a mess kit. The Swedish Army Trangia is more a cook kit. The East German Army Mess Kit could be heated over a Trangia burner if you rigged up a pot stand for it. You might even be able to use the 3 nail potstand I used in some of my later videos.
How long ago did u buy that on eBay for $15. I can't find one that cheap there. I'm biding on one and they all seem to b going for around $40. Great vid btw.
Thanks Hiram, good information! Tough to find one of the Swedish kits however. The East German is much more common, at least here in California. You can widen the opening in the Swedish windscreen to accomodate the East German model with a dremmel. DON'T put aluminum kits in the dishwasher, it oxidizes the finish! Last thing, try putting the Trangia burner on the ground then put the windscreen over it instead of putting the burner in the windscreen through the top.
i've used the german mess kit in many of my trips out in the bush & have used it with an esbit stove,..It really does the job for me, it's a keeper for sure...Great vid, thanx !!!
Good comparison. The best of both worlds is using the Swedish Army kit in aluminum which is what I have and good when weight is a factor like in backpacking yet since I do more boat camping weight isn't such an issue so I'd be more than willing to trade you my aluminum set for your stainless one
Hiram:-) Until then...celebrate life! Laurie (who may actually be buying a sailboat tomorrow)
If I had to make a choice between the two I would include the Swedish Army Trangia in my BOB because it's a whole cook kit that includes a burner. The East German Army mess kit is just that, a mess kit. Good question. Thanks for asking.
@hiramcook I would take my modded East German/ Swedish mess kit =P I liked the German more than the Swedish, Swedish may be steel but to me it's too heavy and the only thing it has over the German is the wind shield/ Stove, so I took out the Dremel and cut the middle slot so the German kit would kit inside. Lighter and better I believe. But both are great mess kits.
Oh BTW u can perfectly cook in this Messkit! but i dont recommend to frie something in it !!! Basically the German Kits are the same as the Swedish one except that the Swedish ones has the plus of the Windshield and the Stove the Germans use Esbit Cookers!
I think its the BW Messkit (WestGerman) looking at the Color but Anyway the germans use this type of Messkit since WW2 so its ok to just call it German Messkit ;)
Hey this is really cool! thanks for doing this review! I have a various assortment of mess kits from the old us style frying pan style to the old school boy scouts kit. i like the swedish one because of that deep pot! you can make a larger meal that way which you cant do with the other kits i have.thanks!
Just got a German Army Mess Kit and tried it out this evening. Worked nicely to boil a lot of water in about 10 mins over a fire hanging on a pole. Once it boiled I sat it right in the embers and it continued to boil great. I was able to pluck it right out of the fire using my fire stoking stick.
Hi there, the German mess kits either East or West are not primarily intended to cook your food in.
Normally you get your provisions from a field kitchen, so the stew is put into the big pot, the drink is put into the smaller pot housed in the big pot and bread is put into the lid.
The Bundeswehr mess kit has some insulating paint on the big pot and the covering lid so I guess this painting will be damaged by using it in a fire.
I too love the Trangia stove and use the all stainless Clickstand S2 with it. It weighs 3 1/4 oz. and lays flat in a mess kit or pot when not in use. It is a little pricey but is so sturdy and is a perfect match for the Trangia stove. I would rather make something but this is just too nice with the Trangia.
I pick these mess kits up at surplus stores for around 6 bucks, I love the windscreen on the swedish, use it with alcohol and a wood fire. I have yet to come across a windscreen/stove for the East German mess kit so I cannot compare, but my heart always will be with the swedish mess kit as it was one of the first ones I carried as a child. Good comparison Hiram and good info!
Thank you for the video Hiram, I have both of these as well and found that the East German pot will fit into the Swedish wind screen just as a side note. You can find the windscreens available to buy separately sometimes, and could combine them. I haven't tried, but a penny soda can stove I think will work in place of the Trangia as well. Thanks again.
there are two different kits....one is the east german war era kit, and the other is the east german, and post war kit..the west german and post war kits have a different internal cup, the bail set up is changed..and it is about 1/2 inch taller.
Hi Hiram, I bought the German Mess kit recently, In it I can fit two penny stoves, and a container with about half a liter of alcohol. I can make about 4 or 5 meals with the stuff has it is in the stove, plus I can carry a couple of bottles of alcohol in my bag. It's a nice mess kit. Got mine at surplus store for 6$. I highly recommend it. It is light, and very durable. The three parts is a plus when you want to cook different things, and having more than one stove is also useful. Mike.
Hi Hiram, I suppose you could use both at the same time on the main part of the canteen. I meant I use one for frying with the lid, and the other stove for boiling water to make porridge. I've tried that once. I love the penny stoves because they are easy to make, and work well enough for what I use them for. I also have a griddle plate stove I made from an Old coleman griddle. I use that when the power goes out. I will post videos on my days off. I'll send you link. Cheers, Mike.
Hiram like your vid's But what happens when you run out of Stove's Retire to outdoor camping &cooking No doubt .= maybe write your own outdoor cook book?Happy boiling Wbradss from K9base.
Thanks Wbradss. There are still many ideas and many things that can be turned into camping stove I don't think I'll run out soon. But even with saying that there are a lot of other things I do like making first aid kits, fire kits, "survival" kits, Scout kits. I just didn't think anyone would be interested in them with all the other videos out there on the subjects. Besides, someone with the last name of "Cook" is expected to be a camping one. LOL
...So an extra lighter and cheaper german kit would be a nice suplement for the swedish kit.
If you could test this and mention weather or not it fits, than i would appreciate the info quite a lot :)

Do you think a psychiatrist would think I was a pyromaniac? I'm not you know. I do do other things besides play with fires. LOL

That's a possibility, but wouldn't you be a little concerned if you wife had 500 pairs of shoes in her closet? hehe

I have the Swedish cook kit, but not the German one. Nice to see a side by side comparison.
Thanks Hiram!

Mike.

Hi Mike. Do you use both stoves at the same time? The shape of the mess kit would seem like that would work.

LOL
