I did not know that they made those like that up until 1978, those GAZ Chaikas and the older ZIS/ZIL cars look a lot like a 1955-56 Packards, rumor has it that they bought the dies and tooling from Studebaker Packard after Packard shut down.
@hifijohn Yup, usually with the older soviet models, the designs usually go through minimal changes. This here was produced from 1959 to 1978. The GAZ-21 Volga, as well as 22 (Station Wagon), and 23 (special V8 variant made for security forces) was produced from 1956 until 1970, staying basically the same in terms with looks. Then you had the GAZ-24 Volga replacing them in full production from 1970 until like the early 1990s.
Similar rules applied with other well known east bloc cars too!
@LOTIL62 companies, private or state owned ,take the path of least resistance.why bother with new designs when there is no competion from other companies or from imports
@ClassicDragRace No Leivategija ikkagi ju ;). Kui pole mootor vahetatud vms pole nagu tema töögi ju. :D Ma juba otsisin netist kust saaks osta sellist :D
I want one!!! Everyone who says it's just a copy of a 1950's American car can fuck off! Since all they did was buy a few for study. Too bad the push-button transmission always had problems.
@MrMoterKid You see... The Russians bought the production gear for it from Packard, and its virtually identical to a 1955 Packard Patrician. But you are right in that its not a copy, in a way you can say this car IS a Packard, just bulit at the GAZ(Gorkovskij Automobilny Zavod) factory in Niznyj Novgorod, Russia.
They were only made for government officials only. The proletariat couldn't get them-just lesser cars like Volgas and Mosvich 128's and whatnot. Only 144 were made each year.
The V8 was only given to the KGB. It could barely top 160kph (100mph) anyways, but still, if you were in the back of one in between two KGB members, it was going to be a very long ride!
Oh yeah-the automatic transmission used a pushbutton system on the dashboard. It never worked well...
@xstang55, you are talking about GAZ 114 and 115 and 117., those 3 were made exclusivly for the very highest ranks, you could see them only in Moscow, only very few every year, all handmade.
This thing here was a little more common, regional party bosses etc were driven around in those, and strangely enough, you could rent it for marriage ceremony
it's a beautiful car, copy or not...

Few quick facts about this car:
They were only made for government officials only. The proletariat couldn't get them-just lesser cars like Volgas and Mosvich 128's and whatnot. Only 144 were made each year.
The V8 was only given to the KGB. It could barely top 160kph (100mph) anyways, but still, if you were in the back of one in between two KGB members, it was going to be a very long ride!
Oh yeah-the automatic transmission used a pushbutton system on the dashboard. It never worked well...
xstang55 2 years ago
I don't know where you're getting this from.
~ The V8 was only given to the KGB. It could barely top 160kph (100mph) anyways. ~
No, it wasn't, high ranking party officials, chairmans, etc all could get V8 chaikas.
And regular KGB agents used mainly Volgas
And the automatic transmission works and the top speed is actually 173 km per hour.
Mine doesn't go as fast or accelerates as it should but after 40's there isn't a car that hasn't lost significant power over time
