My problem was always too lose, so I don't know if this will help you at all. But having the yarn twirled around a couple of fingers helps you because you can change the tension by simply bring the fingers close in for less tension or further apart for more. I hope that helps. ;o)
Can you explain (in a comment) how you avoid too much tention? (the sound wasn't very clear). When I knit continental, I don't have the yarn wrapped around any of my fingers, and still I have a tendancy to knit too tightly.
