Also, he doesn't stop eating the heart to go on a diet - I think this shows how little you actually watched the film. He stops eating to throw the heart at the wooden duck, which he clearly feels is judging him, even when he's totally alone. In that same sense it portrays a boy who might be fully aware of this "suburban world" and wants to get out. He con fronts it, them, and himself only to come to the conclusion that it is not him who needs to change but them.

The use of an unobtainable love, may reflect the idea that we are currently stuck in this very struggle even now. we are reaching for the moon. note the use of the space shuttle audio in the background at the end)

It doesn't need to have a "message" per say. It actually functions beautifully with out an "obvious message" That said, I feel that there are some "take a way's" that some might call a message. To me it seemed that there was a subtle critique of the "American suburban family" All of them are very dramatic characters who all seem to be a part of a facade depicting the proverbial "family" they are stereotypes, as is Dunny. It seems to question the legitimacy of suburbia and its norms.
