They assigned the blocks grid notations; familiar in games such as chess and the aforementioned battleship. The levers supply power to specific blocks on the grid. It's an interesting combination of sliding puzzle and sokoban. The way it's set up makes it more difficult than it could be, as it's left up to the players to realize exactly what it is, and what is going on. All in all, a surprisingly advanced puzzle for such an apparently simple game.

They mapped out the Pistons and Blocks similar to Battleship, but they then corresponded a lot of them to different combinations of levers. This is a very advanced puzzle. I love it!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that it happens because in the update, glass blocks that are touching another block will become dark.
