Does Steve Martin live at Camp Strauss in Brevard? I heard that - is it true? I learned to swim there before anyone knew him. Back in the glorious Olin days when the whole town could stink but the whole town was gainfully employed. So many young families - just like ours. Not the quaint, retirement mountain village it is today. No offense. But I miss the old days very much.
posting info about steve's new book late for school with links to purchase it for your kids , grandkids and neighbors kids for christmas time! see the idea girl says word press sept 16 2010 :)
There just seems to be no end to this man's talents. I've heard him on the 5-string bluegrass banjo for years, but I wonder if he's ever done anything on the 4-string Irish tenor banjo.
I never thought banjos were cool until i heard this on snl. but steve martin makes the banjo cool, or does the banjo makes him a redneck? maybe its both. :P
Actually the banjo came from Africa. It's more of an African-American instrument since it was brought over by unfortunately enslaved Africans to the New World.
There are still many banjo-like instruments still used in Africa today such as the Akonting in Ghana- basically a gourd with animal skin stretched over the top with strings attached.

Actually the instrament did NOT come from africa, but was developed by african slaves HERE in the USA. It still doesn't make it a redneck instrament, but it isn't an instrament FROM africa. You idiot.
I'll have you know I have a degree in music education! :p
It is true that the banjo was developed by slaves in the Americas, but it was derived from gourd instruments with animal skin membranes with a neck and strings attached to make a crude cordophone. It make have not been called a banjo until it arrived here, but it was definitely of African origin.
See the documentary Throw Down Your Heart. It chronicles banjoist Bela Fleck's visit to discover the origins of the banjo in Africa

Brevard here too. Michael Guggino (Brevard '96) is also featured (to the left of Steve Martin at the beginning) on mandolin.
