Ninchick40 thank you so much for the translation, I have been wondering about it since I first saw this movie when it was first released, Baryshnikov is my idol, he's the best.
Wayward horses There’s a precipice beside me. On the brink of it I’m driving In a sleigh that’s pulled by horses - I am whipping, I am lashing; I drink mist and gulp the currents - hard against the wind I’m striving And enjoy a nasty feeling: “There’s my end where I am dashing!” Don’t you fly so fast, my horses, slow - to a trot not so brisk! Don’t concede to the whip, to the thong! But my horses are so wayward, being so hard to please, Leaving me no time for a life, for a song...
Jeez, really? So many here do not know how to watch a movie that sparks their interest. At the end are credits which list every person, music, choreographer, etc. I think of the song in this vid as the horse song because I am American and cannot fully appreciate it because I am not fluent in Russian. But it hits me in so many ways, much like opera that I also am not fluent in but garner the general idea.
When I was little, my grandmother always used to have my brothers and I watch this video about the Trans-Siberian Railroad, and this guy's music was the background of a few scenes. His voice used to scare the hell out of me.
hello everybody, well i love this song, but i can't find it, does anybody know from where can i download it, i just wanna the song as an mp3, not the video thanks

@juanitoye Como dice nivoelnivo01 anulgiax hizo la traducción a ingles. I LOVE THIS<.. I AM HE WHO WROTE THE SCORE < WHO BEGGED FOR MORE< FROM A gOD with little love,.. i M he who shook with rage and love,.. begging for his life,.. the love is forever,.. my horses now run free !
"We are on time, it is not the custom to be late when visiting God..." Only this single line shows Vysotski`s brilliance in poetry! He was a talent born once in a thousand years!
Yeah, i agree. It was the whole situation in his life, that run out of control. The government was against him, and didn't let him sing his songs and play in movies. Visotskiy had his wife living in another country, and he couldn't see her for long periods. His health was ruined by drugs and alchohol. He also loved fast racing, and got more than into 10 serious car crashes, in which he didn't die by miracle. In fact he played with death... and may be this song is also about that
@TheHATECORE yup, I think so too. Vlad was really an amazing musician. This amazing song with the virtuosism of Baryshnikov was a big shot to the heart....
@Jayjen35 As far as i know (or as far as a russian newspaper i read, knows it) the piece was choreographed by US choreographer Twyla Tharp. They collaborated quite a lot in 70s and 80s.
What a great combination! Barishnikov's dancing, Vysotsky's voice and Mirren's smoldering beauty. Vysotsky is part of the reason I studied Russian language and history in school. I wanted to know what he was singing about with so much passion.
@JuicyNuggets I was trying to post the translation, but it's too long so it won't let me - you can find the translation if you type in google "vysotsky fastidious horses translation"
@mayaboldyrlol Thank you., for years now trying to get the translation for this song specially, I feel it strongley even with out understanding what's it about.
@JuicyNuggets Actually, no. It's about a man, riding in a carriage on the cliffs. On one hand, he is charging them, on the other, pleading them to slow down. Contains exceptionally powerful symbolism of a man facing death. Vysotsky was unquestionably Russia's most popular poet of the 20th century. Baryshnikov was a big fan of his.
Vysotsky had lots of songs about freedom, but pretty sure this one is not about it at all. Its too poetic to be just about freedom. The text is more about the feeling of closing death, or about man's place in this world, or maybe about the relations with God. It's really too poetic to understand the whole meaning, but it's definitely not only about the freedom. Far not all songs of Soviet period were about freedom)
@TheHATECORE I think that this song talks about the alcoholism on his life. The horses are the alcoholism he had and how he wasn't able to control them and he felt like death was nearby.
The man is hoping across the stage in sneakers...Sneakers! Can you do that? Also, ahhh...no knee pads. He's sliding everywhere and breaking down, and leaping back up...God this sequence is defying gravity, and expressing the meaning of true freedom through dance, music, lyrics, art, --- expression. You go Mr. B!
On a rugged cliff, the very edge, above the endless chasm
I keep lashing at my horses with my whip clenched in a spasm
But the air is growing thinner, I am gasping, drowning, crying
I can sense with horrid wonder, I am vanishing, I'm dying chorus: Slow your gallop, oh my horses! Slow your gallop I say! Don't you listen to my stinging whip! But the horses I was given, stubborn and so unforgiving, Can't complete the life I'm living, cant conclude the verse I'm singing
final chorus: Slow your gallop, oh my horses! Slow your gallop I say! Don't you listen to my stinging whip! But the horses I was given, stubborn and so unforgiving, Can't complete the life I'm living, at least let me finish singing
Not only is the dance brilliant, but the song is incredibly wonderful! I have been looking for this version for a while. Thank you for posting this. It is an all time favorite of mine!

This is the most amazing scene/dance I have ever seen- I feel no one will ever outdance Mikhail Baryshnikov- he is pure talent and genius,
To BBOY2020: Even if you are a true b-boy-break/hip hop- you should appreciate the art and genius of this dance and how it is the passion that comes thru in a performance that gives it feeling and makes what we are seeing beautiful. Maybe u should quit that class if you think "what sounds good to some" is the only basis for talent- ur not going to make it
@TheBishopSSR No I do not. I understand that the song is about freedom, which is great and all, but we watched this movie in dance class a few weeks ago, and everyone was cringing at this part because of how its sung. When you show this scene to ordinary Americans, they're not going to want to know what the lyrics mean, they just care about if it sounds good, which it doesn't
@BBoy2020 We had a visit to God there are no delays but there angels sing these evil voices slightly slower horses you tight Do not listen to the whip but that the horses I have got my fastidious I live does not have time to finish singing so khotyaby
@BBoy2020 What this "if it sounds good which it doesn´t" is supposed to mean?! Some people like techno, others don´t ( and for me it is just irratating electronic sounds). Some people adore opera, others simply can´t stand it. Some people like Metallica, others don´t. Some people like pop ect. And yes, some people like Vysotsky s singing, others don´t really. If it doesn't sound good to you and some other people it doesn't give you the right for a general statement like this one.
@BBoy2020 The "ordinary Americans" to whom this doesn't "sound good" have no soul. They're the plastic, hi-tech generation. I don't understand a word of this song, but I can feel the soul in it. And most people outside of plastic, fast-'food' America can feel it, too. (And I'm American, by the way.) Middle America has sold its soul to mass-marketed TV and music.
@TheBishopSSR The horses Choosy.. Do not give me to live so give though to sing that that I want and as I want release(let off) my horses I know that to me a little to live and I stand to edge(territory) of destruction bear(carry) me the horses choosy
Thx for posting this. i was forced to watch this movie as a child. this was my favorite part. the song is so powerful and passionate, even though, i dont understand a single word. i could never find any info on the artist until now. Thx again.

You are never late arriving if you visit the Almighty,
Why, then, are the angels singing with their voices, vexed and frightful?
Or, perhaps, it is the harness bells so deep in sobbing drown,
Or, perhaps, it’s me who’s begging flying horses to slow down?
Don’t you fly so fast, my horses, slow - to a trot not so brisk!
Don’t concede to the whip, to the thong!
But my horses are so wayward, being so hard to please,
Leaving me no time for a life, for a song...

I will stop for a blink, I will let horses drink
For a brief second more, I will stand on the brink...
I will perish, as a feather that the hurricane has swallowed,
In a chariot they'll pull me through the snow in blinding gallop
All I ask of you my horses, slow your pace but for a moment
To prolong the final seconds of approach to my last comfort.

We have made it. Right on time, God has left us with few choices

Or is it I the one who's screaming for my horses to shift gears?

Maybe u should quit that class if you think "what sounds good to some" is the only basis for talent- ur not going to make it

The dance is amazing, but the song is just awful
BBoy2020 1 year ago
@BBoy2020 You probably don't understand a single word of this song, do you?
TheBishopSSR 1 year ago

@davehshs Or you could just stop acting so high and take my comment as one from a pretentious, ignorant asshole.

@TheBishopSSR The horses Choosy.. Do not give me to live so give though to sing that that I want and as I want release(let off) my horses I know that to me a little to live and I stand to edge(territory) of destruction bear(carry) me the horses choosy
Clearly what is it song against government
