Went to this game with my southern traitor brother,at half time he shook my hand and said better luck next year ! Well the rest is party of our history,I thought my bruv was going to cry like the scousers in the east stand. One of the last great atmosphears at the bridge before all the glory hunters started comming.give me a away game every time.
God this video makes me well up. I don't think anything will top this in my life; this will be the one match that I think I will say to any grandkids 'if only you could have been there'.
Not only was it an amazing match on it's own terms, it was probably the most significant matchin our recent history. Without that second half none of the great stuff that followed would have happened. I was 15 at the time and my mum had died only weeks beforeand and I clung to football - thank god for this team
liverpool fans say chelsea have no history when in fact liverpool fc is a big part of chelseas history. if chelsea had lost this game 2 0 down to then win 4 2 chelsea would not have won the fa cup in 97 and the cup winners cup in 98. also when chelsea was a average to poor side late 70s early 80 chelsea also beat liverpool 4 2 78 and 2 0 82 both in the fa cup when liverpool were european champions. chelsea had 3 1 wins against liverpool in 77/78 and 84/85. no big lpool turnout at all 4 games!
Brilliant match I was there only 12 at the time, the place almost collapsed I loved winning the titles but this is one of my favorite matches ever, along with the 5-0 drubbing of United and beating Arsenal at Highbury 2-1 in the Champions League.
This is one of the games that we all still talk about at chels. Even after all our success of late this still feels the most special game at the bridge. Vicenza the season after was superb as was Barcelona in the second leg in 05. But this was really special. I was in the old benches and the place was absolutely rocking that sunday. That is what we call fucking history you arrogant scouse monkeys.
I really enjoy watching the pre-Ranieri Chelsea. They had a lot of outstanding players and I much prefered those baggier kits of the mid-to-late '90's than the skin-tight kits of today.
Hitchock, Sinclair, Clarke, Lebeouf, Minto, Peterescu, Di Matteo, Wise, Newton, Zola Vialli was the team I think, with Hughes coming on at half time, which changed the game
Hitchock, Sinclair, Clarke, Lebeouf, Minto, Peterescu, Di Matteo, Wise, Newton, Zola Vialli was the team I think, with Hughes coming on at half time, which changed the game.
I'm a Liverpool fan, but back in these days (pre-abramovich) Chelsea had a good team, a team with character. Now it is a lot harder to respect them because of all their money.
fuck off you wank scouse. Liverpool had City like money status through 70s and 80s and early 90s before United started harversting TV money, and you bought every good player for your sake, or the sake of others not getting them. like City does..yet all that is a part of your GLORIOUS HISTORY!..fuck off with that bullshit. Chelsea will probably have 19 league titles before you have..it`s gonna be 20 more years at least before you win again. You`ll face mid table status soon!
Oh my days. WHAT A GAME! Remember watching as a young lad, absolutely amazing. The crowd goin completely mental and the stadium is only half built! You just don't get that nowadays at The Mighty Bridge.
I don't know what it is. This Chelsea team was brilliant, amazing to watch, fantastic for the neutral. But they never won leagues. Nowadays they win leagues year on year, they are still amazing to watch... but because of Roman's roubles the neutral now hates them.
I was sat in the old benches (West stand) for this. Been going to and watching Chelsea for 40 years now and this game is still my all time favourite...
@Deanocfc same, but the first football match I remember was the FA cup final we would eventually get to this season, I remember climbing onto the couch when Di Matteo scored lol although I dont remember Newton's goal, but what can you say, I was only 3 or 4 lol
by far my fravourite game i was 14 years old down the pub with my grandad the whole pub was moving. Went into school next day with the biggest grin across my face. UP THE CHELS!!!!!!!!
No it's not, the shed is on the left NOW but back then the camera was on the other side and filmed the east stand so the shed in the video is on the right side, trust me mate you're only 15, I'm 22, I'm old enough to remember.
The construction work is actually the new Shed End (and hotel) going up, the television camera gantry had always been located under the roof of the old West Stand until it was demolished in the summer of 1998. Ever since then the main camera's have been in the East Upper which is why you now always see the Matthew Harding Stand to the right.
and who says we werent a good team before roman came along, abramovic actually saved us because the club was over £100m in debt, so we would have done a leeds without him,
i know. i member going chelsea and there was collection boxes for save the club, i miss this chelsea doe if it wasnt for the club being in so much debt than i would have preferred roman didnt come.
to be honest i miss this chelsea. when people say where was you when you were shit they are talking bollocks cos we never shit.
I know, Im sick of all my freinds at school saying that we "bought the league" and we would have never won anything whithout abramovic, in my opinion, buying the league is match fixing, sure, you can buy a bunch of good players, but you cant buy team spirit and determination
yeh and u gta remember that we had a really good team before roman came and won quite a few things in the late 90s. fa cup 1997 and 2000. league cup 98, cup winners cup 98, beat real madrid in the super cup 98. to name some
@ThatKidJoel HOW WOULD CHELSEA HAVE GONE BUST WITH 100 MILLION DEBTS. TURNOVER WAS 100 MILLION AT THE TIME 2ND BIGGEST TO MAN UTD 75 MILLION WAS EUROBOND NOT PAYABLE TO 1997 WITH 6 MILLION A YEAR INTEREST INTEREST ALOT LESS THAN THE 60 MILLION THE GLAIZERS NOW TAKE OUT OF MAN UTD TO PAY THERE INTEREST EACH YEAR. ALOT OF CLUBS HAVE DEBTS OF ALOT MORE THAN 100 MILLION WHY AINT THEY GOING BUST THEN. ALSO CHELSEA COULD HAVE SOLD PLAYERS IF THEY WANTED TO LIKE OTHER CLUBS HAVE DONE
this is the real chelsea, zola, di matteo, wise, dont get me wrong lampard, terry and drogba are legends, but the zola era chelsea is the team I grew up supporting
this is the real chelsea, as much as i love the success we had in the last years, it has tarnished are club with a taki look, favourite chelsea, the one i grew up supportin
I went with my brother to this game who supports liverpool. At half time he shook my hand and said "never mind bruv , there is always next year ". Well i will always remind him of that comment .
Games like that r why we all go to matches. LOVE IT
No, that was the only season it was like that. The season before there was a temporary south stand after the shed had been knocked down....and the season after (97/98) the new shed end had been built.
Another match that I will never forget, that first 20 minutes of the second half was stuff of dreams - absolutely brilliant. Excellent upload, thank you.
this is from memory but i would have to say: de goey granville leboeuf clarke duberry wise poyet di matteo petrescu flo vialli zola came on as sub and scored.
pls Iwould like to know the names of the 11 players team of 1998(the winner team of cup winner'scup) i could you pls let me know...i m supporter of greece!thnx!!
Ill never forget this game Hughesy changed it when he came on at the begginning of the 2nd half Chelsea were absolutely brilliant must be 1 of the best FA cup ties ever been and 1 of the happiest days of my life regarding football.
i was at this game, i was 16 with my dad, when that goal went in to make it 3-2, it was one of those moments where fans who didnt know eachother where cuddlin n goin mad, some bloke i didnt even know picked me up n threw me about lol one of those truely gr8 football moments that brings people 2gether....The best game i've ever been to without doubt, not 2 mention after the game the late gr8 peter osgood let us in the players lounge where i met the whole team !!!!
i watched this game with awe and amaze and literally went bezark when zola and vialli grabbed those goals reming this was an fa cup replay right??? (i was only 7 at this time)
Walking up those steps at the side of the Shed on match days was just fantastic back in the 70's and 80's. Despite want some fans of other clubs think, we used to have some hugh crowds at the Bridge and had some of the most passonate supporters in the country.
You can keep the prawn sandwiches and £50 seats-give me the old terraces anyday.
The sad part is thats true for all stadia now. The support is getting shittier all the time, and now the owners want to take the game around the world?!?! Pisses me off as a Chelsea fan and a football fan more importantly...and I'm American.
we had a tour in america this pre season and our first friendly next pre season is in china... and your saying were not trying to take the game around the world???
and like danzig said, the support at the bridge, especially the west and east stand, is just woeful
we play in anothe country cos thats pre season and their FRIENDLYS its a practice but what the FA want to do is to extend the season so we have to play league matches in another land. Thats crazy !!!
the bridge is only quiet wen we play sumone like derby wen they only bring 10 fans who make no noise. but if we play liverpool yids or the gooners who fill half the shed the atmosphere is eletric !! :D
I was also in the Shed End a few weeks later when Liverpool came back for revenge in the league. The papers were full of it before the game. this time we saw them off 3-1. great days
I remember watching this game, and Liverpool where running chelsea Ragged 1st half, then Hughes came on and turned it round, giving Barnes and Wright hassle.
The camera panned into the scousers at half time all delighted and as Chelsea went on to score 4 they where focusing on a teenager balling his eyes out in the East Lower lol.
My favourite game. I watched this match in Cape Town with the South African Liverpool supporters club. Just me and the bar man supporting Chelsea. It was a brilliant day. At the final whistle the Liverpool supporters just up and left and I danced around the bar for hours.
what a comeback? Nice chelsea

we play in anothe country cos thats pre season and their FRIENDLYS its a practice but what the FA want to do is to extend the season so we have to play league matches in another land.

The papers were full of it before the game. this time we saw them off 3-1. great days

Probably the day that Chelsea turned into a big club. Fantastic 2nd half performance, great result and in May, our first proper cup in 26 years
