There's no doubt that you have excellent technique and great chops. But your playing is "young" and "immature". Kinda logical since you're still just a kid :) I have no doubt that over time your playing will refine itself into a more adult/mature form. Still, my advice would be to focus the musical aspect. You've got the physical skills. Now you need to work on "groove" / "harmony". The techniques are a tool to tell your story. And your story is not a series of random events... :)

I asked him if he played with a metronome, because the tempo was fairly stream of consciousness...and then recommended he play with more musicians to develop a sense of musicality with his playing.

I can guarentee you i am better than this guy, playing in an 18 piece jazz band isn't the easiest thing in the world but musically it is fantastic.
