Matthew and John were Jesus' actual disciples who lived, ate and drank with Him. Mark's account was written down under the supervision of the apostle Peter (Jesus' number 1 man).

Luke was a doctor, (also mentioned elswhere in the NT) who was highly experienced in literacy and writing, and who formed his account from people who walked with Jesus

He could have stopped it at any time but knew that through this we may now be saved. That's why it's a 'sacrifice' rather than a simple 'slaughter'. I found it very difficult to watch...but then its so easy to forget how great a price Jesus the God-man paid for us..I am sure that even this film does not bring out the full horror of what Jesus did for us on the cross...the amazing thing is to realise that when He was on the cross He took all of the sin of the past and the future on himself...thats my sin and yours too so that we could know God as a living frien and reality and not ourselves go to hell....
