As a James Bond fan I must say, this is a fantastic parody. Having Dr. No be an eye doctor. I hope that some day Sesame workshop puts out a DVD of all the Monster Piece Theater skits on it.
This is why I think Joseph Mazzarino should perform Don Music if he should be brought back, because the voice he uses for James Bond would fit Don very nicely.
Here in England this wud b on Channel 4 every lunchtime in the 80s & 90s. When I had either lunchbreaks or day of from college I couldnt wait to watch monsterpiece theatre & that was when i was 17 lol
Hahaha give me 1000 dollars, and the patient says no! hahaha classic, thanx 4 uploadin this i use 2 love monsterpiece theater wit sir alister cookie! =D
@1990babyface They're simply playing off "Masterpiece Theater " Part of the classic theater look usually has playwrites and pictures of famous writers (In the Masterpiece Theater you'd probably see pictures of Shakespear, etc along with the actual titles of plays he and others wrote. It's simply a technique used as a comedy effect to have pictures of muppets there instead of actual writers
@1990babyface To sum it up in a sentence, yes. It's the effects model, as it's called (I've been into bad comedy for 21 years). To try to put this in English as they say without getting too technical you want to try to relate the joke or humor to the subject matter at hand as close as possible. Because this Muppet sketch is a "play on" effect (of Masterpiece theater in this case) they want to incorporate them into the effects model of the actual classics show, if I'm not getting too technical.
@1990babyface It's the same reason there are cookies laying all over -it's part of the effects model again (in this case Alistair CookIE who, incidentally is used in place of "Alistair CookE" -the host of Masterpiece Theater. This "play on words" as it's called (Cookie instead of Cooke) is made more effective -adding to the amount of humor involved- by adding not only other Muppets (instead of the usual other famous writers) pictures but also cookies laying all over if you noticed them. Follow?
@1990babyface Let's see...If this segment was run by a chicken instead of Cookie, there no doubt would be pictures of chickens, eggs, etc. (instead of cookies) all over. If this was run by a dog, there'd be bones, a few newspapers, no doubt a fire hydrant or 2 all over. Starting to get it? Because this is is a play on from Masterpiece Theater AND is being hosted by Cookie Monster (a Muppet), they need to use BOTH to make it funny. Because he's a Muppet who loves cookies, that's what's all over.
@jfpinell When you sum it up in a paragraph, I'm still confused. Your still getting techincal. I'm not in college (although I'm 20) using those big words.
@1990babyface I guess I'm used to talking to other people I instruct that have far more experience/training. It's simple though. Let me ask: Do you think it would be funnier to simply have a picture of a chicken crossing the road or with a coop in the background and maybe other chickens standing around "cheering it on" while it's crossing the road? Or is it funnier to have a fireman wearing red suspenders in the middle of nowhere or in a fire station? The atmosphere it's set in helps the effect
@1990babyface No. Go the other way on age. I'm not trying to be funny...yet. You want funny, I'll tell a joke! What do you get when you cross a frog & a Chinese restaraunt? Kermit the egg roll! Or, What do you call a nobel cow? Sir' loin! Or, What do you call a cow with a C-section? Decalf-inated! But anywho...I guess I'll have to start at the bottom. Simply put, they're there for humorous effects. You have to know a little about the theory & philosophy of comedy to really understand more.
@1990babyface PLEASE! Never call my jokes good! .....You'll ruin my reputation! Actually I can do worse: Why did the duck cross the road? Because he was tied to the chicken! (Wocka! Wocka!)
Anywho let me ask what exactly DO you want to understand about why those are there? I'm not sure how much simpler I can make it. I'm an excellent instructor. I've had almost 22 years of practice. -And I'm only about 2/3 of the way up the ladder. The guy who teaches me is about 10Xs worse than I am!
@1990babyface Hey, that bear -Frank Oz is our #1 instructor! Most if not all bad comics use that line -which incidentally is known as a "rim fire line". I know I'm getting technical again but this is the termonology you gotta know to be a professional & move up ranks in the FBI (the Funny Business Investigation agency). I should try & see if my C.O. (Comedy Official) -my instructor would be willing to get out here & chat with you as well. but as I said, if I'm confusing, he's 10X worse than me!
@1990babyface Let me put this as simple as I can to start with....In the original Masterpice Theater with Alistair Cook, they would have pictures of his friends around to show. This is a Sesame Street skit, so Cookie Monster should be able to have some of his friends' pictures up to show guests.
@1990babyface It's called "play on words" used often in bad comedy. Thr real show is called "MASTERpiece Theater". The real host's name is "Alistar COOKE" (pronounced cook). They twist it around to make it MONSTERpiece Theater and Alistar CookIE. And, of course, who better to have playing a guy named "Cookie" than Cookie and a monster for Monsterpiece Theater? -Hence CookIE in MONSTERpiece Theater. Am I making sense yet? :)
No really, not quite. I do know him very well though. He told me about this, so I thought I'd give it a try to see if I could better explain it. (I've been into bad comedy a few more years than he has.)
Anyone else notice how the music prior to James Bond's introduction sound like the James Bond theme? I am really sorry that I missed this one I was younger, I became a huge fan of agent 007 later on.
I totally agree. Tears were streaming down my face the first time I revisited this particular opening of "Monsterpiece" (I think there are three different openings, or four), I was laughing so hard.
As a James Bond fan I must say, this is a fantastic parody. Having Dr. No be an eye doctor. I hope that some day Sesame workshop puts out a DVD of all the Monster Piece Theater skits on it.
