in the middle east we know and its very common here , we call it "برشومي" as BarShomy , u can check it out its usually bigger and yellow in the inside , some go red , easy way to do it is to cross it around with a knife and peel it under water with gloves , and just eat it , its amazing
hahaha you guys are silly :) I've eaten these without a knife before. next time find a broad leaf plant and take it's leaves, then by holding it from the top and bottom of the pear (those two areas do not grow thorns) squeeze downward until the skin pops, then peel back using your fingers if you dare (if you see no thorny spots) or use another broad leaf to do so, peel the skin off and eat the innards MMmmmm then again I am Mexican and I grew up foraging these off my family's backyards :)
I ddin't know what it was and i picked one up in bear hands and i got tons and i mean tons of prickly things in my fingers and man it hurt so bad i will never touch one again ever!!!!!
I have a couple good size cacti growing in my yard. Had no idea you could eat them. Going to have to try this.

I learned from living in the desert of Panamint Valley, California.
Now, living in Ridgecrest, CA with prickley pear cactus growing in my front yard...there is fruit to share with my neighbors.
Enjoy raw eating!

Why would a fruit have spines on it? Maybe they should rename it "painful pear"
