Two English idioms I never understood, and still don't really, when I first began learning English were:

1. "It's like comparing apples and oranges" - why wouldn't you compare apples and oranges? They're two different things! Ones red, the others orange, etc.

2. "He wants his cake and to eat it to" - why shouldn't he eat his cake? It's his cake! Let him eat his cake!

I can understand the idioms that at least make logical sense, but some mean the opposite of their literal meaning :(

I remember trying to ask a tired friend who came to my house from gym., "do you want to stay for the night?" but I asked "do you want to sleep "WITH" me". BAD! in fact, he still laughs & jokingly accuses me of rapping him in my house!. That is when I discovered the best way to master English is to study verb phrases not words or grammar. I realized children don't learn grammar rules or big words, yet they speak fluent English than I do. Why? because they grasp verb phrases. Thank YOU sister
