I can't see Jane married with St. John! He is a good fellow maybe but he don't
Love her and nothing is enough after having/feeling such amazing love with Rochester!!! Is like kidding herself trying to love someone else you know you will never love enough... :)
I find it hard to believe people automatically assume, just because there is a passionate scene between two people, they can't just accept that maybe, passion can still be sexy and full of love and desire without the actual act of sex itself.
Jane Eyre is a heroine in books whom we can relate to and we're told her character and yes, although you can see, quite clearly in this portrayal that she loves Rochester deeply, it's not a case of 'she must have given him some'.
I honestly find the whole issue somewhat annoying. Does it really matter?
There is one reason why she should not "give in" in this situation and that is because she might get pregnant. Otherwise it is a none-issue. It is a story about passion against both law and conventions and how she has to choose between integrity and love. In the time there was a hymen-mysticism but we can do very well without that.
he is not just trying to seduce her. He wants to conquer her. And he fails.
Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this, but why can't she marry Mr. River's he is a good, honest man. It's ALWAYS bothered me that Mr. Rochester lied (withheld information) about his wife and then asks Jane to become his personal whore. If any man did that to me, we would NEVER see each other again. I don't care how much I loved him, I have self respect.
Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this, but why can't she marry Mr. River's he is a good, honest man. @ovcas25 Im not agree with you.Because I wouldnt marry someone while loving another.Thats just as discusting.but for people who dont see the reason in selfcontrol:When a virgin gives herself to a man she becomes a woman.Women cant be calm without a man, girls can because they didnt give up their selfcontrol to another human.Man is very unconstant in his attention to one woman so obviously woman has to make sure he is bound to her.this former "rules" were just wise.thats all..
@ovcas25 I agree with the fact that it bothered me that Mr. R withheld the info. about Bertha. However, she definitely shouldn't have married Mr. Rivers. They were not in love. She was in love with Mr. R. In the book it says Rivers sucked the life out of her and formed her to be the person HE wanted her to be (when he taught her a language, etc.) & she couldn't act like herself around him. She would have been miserable being married to him. She loved Rochester. Not him.
you see... here's the thing... i see serious making out over there in that room, so the fact that it says she still a virgin means she has some serious self control going on there!!!! :O
i love this version of jane eyre but i do wish they had stuck to the book with rochester pleading with her. he's just as passionate in the book without being ridiculously sensual. still i can see why they did it this way to attract all us single ladies who are lonely.
Whatever you think it would hardly do to spend the rest of your life in it! You will have to get out and face the world sometimes :-) And I believe that was her problem in the novel as well even if this very scene is invented.
I like to think of Pippi Longstocking even if that was written more than a hundred years after. But Pippi refuses to grow up/stop being a rebel. Jane does actually mature to become one.
@Kabgirl24 Jane didn't leave Rochester because he lied to her!! 'She forgave him the very minute', but couldn't bear to live romantically with a married man, it was against her principles!
This adaption is really nice, but you should absolutely read the book too!
@MysitcRiver29 she never really forgot (well, not in the book). She doesn't want anyone knowing her real name because she wanted to escape her past. In the novel, she gives herself the name Elliot, not the Rivers sisters.
Its completely understandable as to why she left. He led her on not telling her that he had a wife. It was not until after someone called him out on it that he disclosed to Jane that he had deceived her. On the wedding day no less, she was a woman who was scorned and utterly humiliated
@PINK23strawberry Mr Rochester was actually described in an ugly fashion in the original novel. I suppose this interpretation of Jane Eyre contradicts otherwise.
OK GUYS i was actually having some confusion with this scene (and the previous scene) as I haven't read the book. So first we see Mr Rochester chasing Jane, then she flees to her room and won't let him in. But from what I've understood from these sexy flashbacks is that she lets him in her room, they make out, and everything appears forgiven, but when she sneaks away (the following morning?) to his obvious surprise. Is this right??
well, the steamy scene in the room is made up for the movie.... In the novel, Jane shows her good judgement and principle by not giving in to Rochester for even one kiss! I don't understand this part of the movie ether. :) If you have access to it, you really should read the book!
Sure, these scenes with Mr Rochester would never have happened. But I guess they had to give the audience some sort of action with the two of them together, else he was hardly in it this episode.
@FullOfBleep Have you EVER even read the book?!?! The whole reason she left was because of how strongly she felt about the fact that it was wrong to lose virginity to anyone but a husband - a legal, not just emotional, husband. Besides, if she and Mr. Rochester had sex, it would make Jane running away totally pointless; she would have already broken the rules, knowingly, why not continue?
"Excuse me, but for you human affections and sympathies have the most powerful hold", for whom they don't?
People react feelingly and cerebrally to whatever occurs to them: reason rules the heart, yet heart certainly has its own appeal and sometimes bends reason. No one is born coldhearted or bereft of ability to feel for someone!
In the book Jane wouldn't even let Mr. Rochester kiss her she had to keep a respectable distance so she wouldn't go to hell. In the movie they were kissing on the bed. not very realistic. If you had a strong sexual attraction to someone and loved them and you let yourself get in the bed with them, I believe you couldn't help but get carried away! Especially when Mr. HOT is doing everything he can to tempt you!!!
It is clear she is thinking back .... For those who are confused... Read the book and u will realise that she doesnt see (the mighty sexy and stunning) Mr Rochester until after she leaves there, for anyone watching this wjo hasnt read the book .... I strongly reccomend it... We hear more of how jane is feeling and her inner thoughts, so many parts missed in this adaptation.... Tho a very excellent adaptation it is, loving it :)
Women weren't supposed to have sexual feelings but R is experianced and knows what he's doing. Playing dirty, still. He knows she won't give in but he has to try. He must have been frantic when he found out she left. And Adele. I doubt anyone considered that little girl's feelings. Children were tollerated and that's it.
@awesome7263 Oh I don't know about that. I don't think I'd be complaining! I love the way he caresses while he is kissing! what wrong with the way he kisses? Of course Im no expert! LOL
its comming a new version of jane eyre with mia -the girl of alice in wonderland- as jane...i dont know how its going to be, but to me there will not be better version than this one, i just love it!
@kenyy103 you got that right, this is the best version of Jane Eyre ever we shall wait til the next but until so this movie is thee best romantic movie of all time
@palebluedot it is: "Jesus said 'you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself'."
True, Love is the first commandment, and i suppose it underlies the nine others! Diana might imply that besides a love to your neighbour and your God, you should give all of your heart to someone you choose to be your life partner. And this should be the eleventh commandment.
WOW! that scene with Toby and Ruth was AMAZING!!! even though the Jane Eyre in the book would totally attest to that. anyway, i think the chemistry with the actors is great.
OMG!!! Toby is literally smoking hot in this vid. there is only one thing that i dislike about this movie. Jane eyre,(if she were real) would be rolling in her grave right now if she saw this. Jane in the book would totally object to him doing that after the wedding.other than that, this movie is the best yet!!
@lesmizwicked55 Well, I dare say that the dialogue between Jane and Mr Rochester in the book as the same atmosphere as this scene of the movie. I mean, of course it's not so "hot", but it is quite audacious for a XIX century novel. Do you remember when he dares her to leave him while he is "softly kissing her forehead and cheek" (etc.)? I think the director has exagerate the scene to meet the taste of the XIX century public, but she has not betrayed JE spirit. She would have liked to do that!
I love the Rochester/Jane scenes here, but I wish the director would have placed them in chronological order instead of here and there during Jane's stay at Morton. Don't get me wrong; I love the passion, but they should have focused more on Jane's inner turmoil rather than the sexual attraction.
@FioreArdente I think maybe it was the director's way of keeping us attached to the story. Honestly, wouldn't we all be super-bored during this part if there weren't these super-hot flashbacks?!? We'd be having serious Rochester-withdrawals!
I have seen the interpretation of Jane Eyre in both the 1983 and 2006 version. This scene is one of the strongest in the book. I would have liked to see it interpreted in the 2006 version as it was in the 1983 version. You get to see Mr. Rochester's despair and anguish to keep Jane, while Jane sees the need to sacrifice herself for what is morally correct. It is a truly moving scene.
hot?? he's domineering, forcing her to accept his opinion. poor little thing has known nothing of love or romance and here he is taking advantage of her and trying to get her to go against everything she's ever believed in. his hands moving over her kneck... "dare you to?" looks like he'd snap her neck if she did.
@chocolatemonkey986 I can see what you're seeing...yes, he has somewhat taken advantage of her, and he is being very coercive and wanting her to go against what she believes in. But he is not actually being domineering or forceful. He's being very gentle! Passionate and suggestive, but gentle. Her principles are part of what he quite admires in her, so call it a moment of weakness that he wants her to go against them. All else pales to his desire for her. That's why women say "HOT!"
i dont why im attracted to mr. rochester but i am! hes just... i dont know! its weird! and wait so did he just randomly show up or was she dreaming? this whole thing is kinda confusing.. but i still think its really good. im inpressed how the movie is so much like the book! there's direct quotes from it and everything :) well put together. and mr. rochester's character.. perfect! haha
@srhpirate2 Precisely, that's what the story is about :). A woman looking for independence and therefore not accepting a life as a mistress when she could've been his equal wife.
@srhpirate2 I feel really sorry for Mr. Rochester he must have been seriously uncomfortable when she left his bed without giving him any loving. I can't believe anyone could have enough will power to leave if they let themselves go that far!!
If I were Jane, I would firstly slap Rochester, I do NOT want to marry a bigamist. Then I would suggest s divorce or an annulment; whichever denomination he follows. Lastly, I'd take my dress off and lay on the bed in the corset...
To leave out what Charlotte Brontë would have thought. I know what I believe about that but I cannot be certain.
But I like the psychology in this. A few hours before, she saw him trapped in hell. It would not be easy to just walk away. And still impossible to stay or to go with him to France with no control at all over the rest of her life.
I don't understand a thing: here, when she is kissing Mr. Rochester and all that stuff, in the movie we see it as it was just a dream. But in the end of the story, when she comes back to Rochester, she asks him if he ever said something about the white-washed villa. So is it a dream or not? LOL
I do not think it is meant to be a dream. This is another angle of the story, leaving the religious stuff and concentrating on the strong, independent and strangely modern heroine. Without the christian moral standards, this scene does not seem that absurd. She would reject him anyway, not wishing to be sacrificed for his consolation, but the logic is different.
@ParisianPrincessAmyB It was not a dream. A scene similar to this was in the book, but was not told to the reader in memory form. The scene occurred a few hours before she leaves Thornfield. Hope his helps.
I realize now why I have a problem with the (albeit touching) "seduction" scene - it's rather out of character. Rochester is way too talkative here, too flowery in speech. I think the violence in the book makes more sense, character-wise...
@skylily345 It's out of character for both of them. Jane would never have let Rochestor touch her like that after she knew about his wife ("He stooped towards me as if to kiss me; but I remembered caresses were now forbidden. I turned my face away and put his aside.") Her deeply moral soul is her most striking characteristic, and with that scene they just threw that out the window. The more I watch of this adaption the more I'm disappointed with it. Too much change from the book.
@frostdiamond1 what i disliked the most about the book is its adamant religious aspect.(it also ends as such!) but i come to forget it was like this for many books. I appreciate Jane because she is she extremely courageous, not because she rejected Rochester but because she refused herself to him. I don't know if i would have had the courage to do so if i loved a man the way she did

@palebluedot it is: "Jesus said 'you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself'."
katsbyandco 1 year ago
@katsbyandco
True, Love is the first commandment, and i suppose it underlies the nine others! Diana might imply that besides a love to your neighbour and your God, you should give all of your heart to someone you choose to be your life partner. And this should be the eleventh commandment.

WOW! that scene with Toby and Ruth was AMAZING!!! even though the Jane Eyre in the book would totally attest to that. anyway, i think the chemistry with the actors is great.
lesmizwicked55 1 year ago
OMG!!! Toby is literally smoking hot in this vid. there is only one thing that i dislike about this movie. Jane eyre,(if she were real) would be rolling in her grave right now if she saw this. Jane in the book would totally object to him doing that after the wedding.other than that, this movie is the best yet!!
lesmizwicked55 1 year ago 3
@lesmizwicked55 Well, I dare say that the dialogue between Jane and Mr Rochester in the book as the same atmosphere as this scene of the movie. I mean, of course it's not so "hot", but it is quite audacious for a XIX century novel. Do you remember when he dares her to leave him while he is "softly kissing her forehead and cheek" (etc.)? I think the director has exagerate the scene to meet the taste of the XIX century public, but she has not betrayed JE spirit. She would have liked to do that!
bosie1984 1 year ago 4
@lesmizwicked55 I think the scene was supposed to have happened BEFORE the wedding and the whole Bertha fiasco.

I love the Rochester/Jane scenes here, but I wish the director would have placed them in chronological order instead of here and there during Jane's stay at Morton. Don't get me wrong; I love the passion, but they should have focused more on Jane's inner turmoil rather than the sexual attraction.
FioreArdente 1 year ago

It is a truly moving scene.
debbie97525 1 year ago
hot?? he's domineering, forcing her to accept his opinion. poor little thing has known nothing of love or romance and here he is taking advantage of her and trying to get her to go against everything she's ever believed in. his hands moving over her kneck...

That's why women say "HOT!"
aowrya 1 year ago 3
@aowrya Most women long for that kind of passionate pursuit! So his taking advantage pales in comparison to that for most of us. :)

@srhpirate2 Precisely, that's what the story is about :). A woman looking for independence and therefore not accepting a life as a mistress when she could've been his equal wife.
EmmaWatsonStar 1 year ago 3
@srhpirate2 I feel really sorry for Mr. Rochester he must have been seriously uncomfortable when she left his bed without giving him any loving. I can't believe anyone could have enough will power to leave if they let themselves go that far!!

LOL
ParisianPrincessAmyB 1 year ago
@ParisianPrincessAmyB
MsSilentia 1 year ago
@ParisianPrincessAmyB It was not a dream. A scene similar to this was in the book, but was not told to the reader in memory form. The scene occurred a few hours before she leaves Thornfield. Hope his helps.

midnightmoon333 1 year ago
I realize now why I have a problem with the (albeit touching) "seduction" scene - it's rather out of character. Rochester is way too talkative here, too flowery in speech. I think the violence in the book makes more sense, character-wise...
skylily345 1 year ago
@skylily345 It's out of character for both of them. Jane would never have let Rochestor touch her like that after she knew about his wife ("He stooped towards me as if to kiss me; but I remembered caresses were now forbidden. I turned my face away and put his aside.") Her deeply moral soul is her most striking characteristic, and with that scene they just threw that out the window. The more I watch of this adaption the more I'm disappointed with it. Too much change from the book.
frostdiamond1 1 year ago
@frostdiamond1 what i disliked the most about the book is its adamant religious aspect.(it also ends as such!) but i come to forget it was like this for many books. I appreciate Jane because she is she extremely courageous, not because she rejected Rochester but because she refused herself to him. I don't know if i would have had the courage to do so if i loved a man the way she did
