People probably didn't care that you could clearly see him doing the talking for her because the puppet is so over the top and gesticulates so much that you don't pay attention to him.
Controlling the body and head and mouth with one hand, and controlling the puppets two hands with rods held in his other hand..... plus telling the jokes, good jokes.......man that is talent.
wayland made it clear a few times in a few acts he would tell the crowd...well as you can see the kid to my left is no ventriloquist but it doesn't matter because i am no fucking dummy....so he did move his lips cause he was more a puppeteer then a ventriloquist...but he was good at what he did there are alot of times the camera was on madame and not on wayland and there was times you forgot madame was a puppet cause wayland was just that good ..the new guy will never be as good as wayland
It's strange for Wayland Flowers to be up there talking next to her. It gives away the illusion. (Ok, not that we really believe a puppet is talking.) But if he couldn't do ventriloquism, he should've hid under the table. I mean... I enjoy this, but it makes no sense. Ya know what I mean? weird.
@tygersflowerz actually the point there isnt NOT to move the lips, because, can you see them having a conversation beteen madame and Wayland? And beside, That doll, madame is so huge and makes a lot of gestures to catch the eyes of the audience. And one more thing, it was early 60's, that was the hottest thing that time
This WAS the only guy I know where U saw WHO did the dummy's voice-Anybody who did puppets like HOWDY DOODY,U NEVER SAW THE ACTOR-Or if like in JEFF DUNHAM's case,Ventriqiusts mouths arnt supposed to be seen moving as much as WAYLAND FLOWERS had done-Although He WAS pretty damn funny,Its Too bad he passed away MANY YEARS AGO...=(... R_I_P Wayland
he was trying to get more famous. I'm sure this was the first major motion picture he was in & at that time, Redd Foxx was the shit. lol so i cant say i blame him for wanting some fame to go with that fortune. Perks & all you know? lol
How is MADAME on a comeback?-**WAYLAND FLOWERS DIED** many years ago after MADAME's PLACE was cancaled =( That was my favorite show too-NITECOURT was first,Madames Place was second(JUDY LANDERS whoo-hoo!! ((@y@))....) Is who really made the show!
There is a site dedicated to MADAME =),But that site does tell of wayland dying in 1988 OF AIDS =( How sad that many people in show buisiness in those 1980s would die from the same cause....As U say,The new guys name is hard to remember-
i'm like you madame used to scare the everliving crap out of me. I used to have dreams where i would wake up and there madame would be laying beside me, and she would turn to look at me then roll under the bed and there would be an underground world of madame's living there under the bed...MESSED UP
LOL, well I guess Madame is kinda scary with that eyeliner and she did kind of look like a witch... ;) I always thought she was funny and wow it is amazing how a gay artist could be a mainstream hit on TV back in the 70s and 80s.
I may be flogged for saying so, but I agree! I had chilling images, just barely flashes of memory, of bits of that show from when I was a very very very young child which terrified me so badly. I didn't know what these memories were from and 20+ years later I'm coming across this and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as what i saw brought those deep feelings back. "This is it" I repeated to myself tremulously. It's silly, I know, but I'm a little shaken but also relieved... Terrifying.
I just thought that this movie was soo funny. I want it on DVD now I'd almost forgotten about it. Luckily I'd video taped most of the Madame's Place sitcom back in the 80's.
Madame was so freakin' funny! I was a kid and didn't understand any of the adult themes that were there. She was hilarious! I'll never forget when the owner of the dog that pooped in her yard knocked on the door. "Oh it's the owner of the generous St. Bernard.Well, what can I doodoo for you?"
This is a fun film, and feels like a stage production (which I think it was originally). My love of Wayland Flowers and Madame as a child probably explains the fact that the only male friends I keep in touch with from high school are gay.
this is so funny. i didn't know wayland was dead. isn't someone else doing madame now? i used to love her on solid gold. she looked a lot like dionne warwick.
SO many people only know Wayland Flowers & Madame from Hollywood Squares. I saw him every time he performed at the Grand Finale in NYC. I've never seen NORMAN, IS THAT YOU?, but I will, because it was even funnier when foul mouth Madame used a profanity instead of "doing it with" as in this clip.

@Sneezedoodle Well, Wayland wasn't a ventriloquist. He was a performer and (I guess) a puppeteer.

Does anyone have the film of Madam's x-rated HBO special?
It was hilarious.
She told a story about her fiance Jacque, then gave the definition of "fiance" "it's french for who you are fucking now"

Ive never been more afraid of anything in this world, and im one of those crazy laugh in the face of death types.
Madame is alive and the only reason that goon is moving her arm with the stick is to prevent her from killing the audiance.
If I see another Madame video, i'm moving to tibet.
