About Me:
Singer-songwriter Alina Smith has an amazing, soulful vibrato with a delivery influenced by classic R&B, which is easily identifiable once one gains any familiarity with her work. Her harmonies and inspired vocal arrangements are second to none. She is also a prolific composer and gifted lyricist writing squarely within the modern pop genre. Having twin capabilities for analysis and synthesis enables her to create original music to fit particular artists or styles across genres and national styles, which she enjoys. On a current project, Alina wrote a song around an instrumental track provided by a successful Japanese music producer in the J-pop (Japanese pop) style, for a female artist popular in that country.
While she often experiments with music and lyrics, Alinas songs are mostly well structured with strong verbal and melodic hooks. When written for herself, her lyrics often tell a wistful personal story or make playful observations. A song may be inspired by a random word capturing her imagination; an ethereal folk tale; a social observation.
Alina began performing classical and international folk music professionally as a child vocalist growing up in St. Petersburg, Russia. By the time she emigrated to the U.S. in her teens, Alina had garnered ovations throughout Europe. The shift of scene followed artistic reinvention as she newly dedicated herself to the heretofore unavailable genre of R&B. As well, Alina Shestipalova became Mrs. Alina Smith. Barely a year later, fluent and accent-free, she was fronting a girl group in Vegas. Transformation was complete.
However, let us rewind. Alina initially dreamed of being a ballerina. In fact, she was well on her way, aided by natural talent combined with an ideal physique and abetted by singular will and effort, when, at age seven, music took over. Point of this bio-digression is self-explanatory: Russian ballerinas are perhaps the most disciplined humans on earth.
Alina has played colleges and clubs ranging from Ashford & Simpsons Sugar Bar in NYC to the Mint in LA, mostly accompanying herself on the keyboard and constantly writing, writing, writing. Assembling a backing band, assisted by one of the top musical directors-arrangers in the industry, co-writing and recording with several established writer-producers, Alina is pursuing publishing and song placements. In addition to her upcoming indie label debut, there is growing demand for her as a demo vocalist and vocal producer across multiple genres.
In addition to writing, playing and recording music, Alina does her own web design, photo and video editing, writes fiction and paints, and just designed a line of music-themed merchandise. She continues to receive invitations to perform internationally, most recently in Beijing as the only non-Asian singer in a concert broadcast on Chinese TV, a run-up to singing at the opening of the 2011 student Olympics to be held in Shenzhen.
