Great Western motive power has never fared particularly well in the northen fells so the return of a 'Castle' running over Shap was eagerly awaited with many wondering how a she would perform following recent excellent runs by 'Scots Guardsman'. In my video I think we can see that Great Western pride has been well and truly restored after some spirited running by 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe' with this Vintage Trains excursion, steam hauled from Crewe to Carlisle and return. The immaculately turned out loco ran well with a sensible load and excellent footplate crews. The video features scenes at Shap Wells northbound and on the return just after Shap Summit, where the only spot of rain in the entire area landed on the camera lens and, finally, storming through Warrington Bank Quay

A4 Pacific no. 60007 'Sir Nigel Gresley' seen at Chester bringing it's train from the sidings and then departing for London Paddington on a dull June afternoon. I wonder if the passengers in the cramped conditions on the incoming 'Voyager' as Sir Nigel departed would have liked to swap for a proper train.

GWR Castle 4-6-0 no. 5043, 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' seen at Hargrave near Beeston Castle, Cheshire with Vintage Trains excursion from Tyseley to Llandudno Junction. The passengers were then taken by coach for a run over the Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Hafod -Y -Llyn. A squally shower, which typically started just a few minutes before the train arrived, was blowing rain onto the camera lens and also onto the hapless videographer. The engine is a credit to those responsible for her restoration.

GWR King no.6024 seen in the northern fells in 1999. A heavy train and steaming problems forced the train to slow to a stand just after the first shot near Scotsman's Bridge, Greenholme and enabled a quick run to Scout Green to grab a hand held shot there. Note the 'enthusiast' stood directly in front of me at one point to get a better view. Further slow progress allowed a third shot just after Shap summit. Great enginemans skills allowed 6024 to recover well from a couple of nasty slips at Scout Green. The loco redeemed itself on the return south setting one of the fastest times in preservation for the climb to Shap Summit.
