In 1973, the Moscow Ballet competition was a moment in time that if the ballet world had records for feats in ballet competitions, the ballet record books would be dominated by one name, Nadezhda Pavlova. Prior to Nadezhda Pavlova , only one ballet dancer had ever won the Grand Prize in a major ballet competition and that was another incomparable dancer, Vladimir Vasiliev , who won the only Grand Prize award that has ever been given at the Varna Ballet competition, accomplishing that feat in 1964.
One characteristic of the 1973 Moscow competition is impossible to duplicate today. In 1973, there was no junior division and no senior division. All females competed against all females and the same was true of the men. Therefore, in 1973, a 16 year old student from the famous Perm ballet school chose to compete in Moscow against much older, already established principal dancers of major ballet companies around the world. What chance would a 16 year old student have of defeating every major ballerina with many years of professional dancing for a major ballet company. The obvious answer is no chance. What Pavlova did in 1973 had never been done before and has never been done since. Not only did she defeat the best younger ballerinas in the world, but she became the first dancer to ever win the Grand Prize at the Moscow Ballet Competition. Not even , Mikhail Baryshnikov was regarded as worthy of winning that prize when he won a gold medal in the 1969 Moscow Competition. In 1973, Pavlova became the first female to win a Grand Prize at a major ballet competition and no ballerina has won a Grand Prize at a major competition since 1973. Pavlova is the only ballerina to win the Grand Prize at a major ballet competition.

She had become the first dancer to ever win the Grand Prize at the Moscow Ballet Competition, while still a 16 year old student at the Perm ballet school, defeating much older soloists and principal ballerinas from around the world. In this feature, entitled "Duet of the Young", she and her then husband, Vyacheslav Gordeyev , both principal dancers with the Bolshoi Ballet , perform 5 separate numbers.
Part 1 includes the adagio from the final act of Sleeping Beauty plus most of the Rose Adagio. Part two is the entire Rose adagio. Part 3 is the pas de deux from Giselle. Part 4 is Melody to gorgeous music from the composer, Dvorak. Finally, part 5 is the pas de deux from Don Quixote.
This 5 part feature is truly amazing. With all the great dancers around today, there is no partnership today that can perform all 5 of these ballets as well as Pavlova and Gordeyev did 31 years ago.
