AbilityNet believe that everyone should have the right to partake in an information society and global community. As technology has evolved some groups of society have been prevented from taking part fully by the limitations of design and cost of adaptations.

To address this AbilityNet will create a suite of open source, cross platform, assistive technologies that will provide the solutions, tools and applications required to bridge the digital divide and enable those excluded to become part of, and improve their experience of, the digital world. That world incorporates communication, collaboration, learning and leisure and to take part in these, many people need to access computers through an interface other than a standard keyboard, mouse or screen.
In other circumstances the standard interface must be enhanced for the individual. The suite will include tools for word prediction, screen reading, magnification, and on screen keyboard. The tools will offer a richer experience and greater power than those currently offered within operating systems and standard applications. These tools will be distributed globally for free and would give both applications and code that would allow for further developments in the future.

Everyone voting for these awards will over years age, as they do so, simple activities such as typing, reading and even playing become more of a challenge. These tools, now and in the future will enable us all to continue to be a full member of a digital society. (less info)
