Writer-director-producer Russell Brown discusses his new film, The Blue Tooth Virgin, a comedy about two writer friends and what happens when one asks the other to read his new screenplay. The Blue Tooth Virgin was covered by the Writers Guild under its Low Budget Agreement, a contract for films budgeted at $1.2 million and below. The LBA offers deferred minimums, residuals, credit protections, creative rights, pension & health benefits, and enables writers to become Guild members. Nancy Miller, executive producer of TNT's Saving Grace, describes what she looks for in a writer, what she sees as a lack of diversity in Hollywood and the three things writers need to be successful. Miller, who began writing at the University of Oklahoma before moving to Los Angeles in 1978, sold her first script while working as a bartender. Along with Saving Grace, she has created NBC's The Round Table, Leaving L.A. for CBS and Lifetime's Any Day Now. These questions and more were discussed at the latest edition of Publicity 101, a panel presented by the Writers Guild Foundation and the WGAW Publicity and Marketing Committee.
Moderated by former journalist/screenwriter Andrea King, the panel included screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight, Dexter), entertainment publicist Howard Bragman and journalists Claude Brodesser-Akner (Ad Age, NPR) and Jay Fernandez (Hollywood Reporter), all sharing their insights, advice, and experience to help writers raise their industry profile to boost their careers.
