How religion shapes the world

- Martin Himels ambitious documentary series Twist of Faith investigates the collision of current events and religious belief

American presidential politics. The price of Mideast oil. AIDS in Africa, human rights in China, gay marriage in California.

Religion touches everything.

In Twist of Faith, a new 13-part documentary series for VisionTV, veteran Canadian foreign correspondent Martin Himel (End of Days, Jenin: Massacring Truth) embarks on an epic journey around the world to find out how religious faith is shaping current events and how current events are affecting the nature of belief.

VisionTV presents the world television premiere of Twist of Faith on Mondays, starting Feb. 23, at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.

SOUL: Shes got it

Mahalia Brown has a talent that could open doors for her. But if she dares to step through, she may find herself in a dangerous place, far from everything in her life thats safe and true and comforting. Is it a price worth paying to live her dream?

Welcome to Mahalias world. Welcome to SOUL.

A six-part drama premiering in February on VisionTV, SOUL stars Canadas premier R&B artist, Keshia Chanté, as Mahalia, a gifted young gospel singer on the verge of leaving behind the safety of church and family for the fast track to pop stardom.

SOUL is VisionTVs first original hour-long drama series. It airs on Wednesday nights, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.

The series was produced for VisionTV by Halifax Film, an award-winning production company whose credits include This Hour Has 22 Minutes and The Guard. Principal photography took place in Halifax, NS last fall.

SOUL is the first small-screen starring role for Ottawa-born Keshia Chanté, who earned a Juno Award in 2005 for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

As Mahalia, Chanté plays a young woman at a crossroads. A member of the Keystone Church choir, she has been content to play second fiddle to her best friend Alicia (Jessica Parker Kennedy, Smallville), the choir soloist, while secretly dreaming of stardom.

When Keystone competes in a televised choir competition, Mahalia seizes a chance to step into the spotlight, putting her friendship with Alicia at risk. Courted by an influential record producer, she finds her principles put to the test. Can she stay spiritual in a material world?

Mahalias story unfolds against a backdrop of sometimes violent conflict within her troubled urban neighbourhood - a dangerous world of drugs and guns into which her ambitious brother Malcolm (Ish Morris, ReGenesis) is increasingly drawn.

SOUL also co-stars Eli Goree (North/South) as her boyfriend and fellow choir member Samson, a young man struggling to protect a troubling secret, and Karen LeBlanc (Playmakers) as choir leader Dee Dee Washington, a former pop star and recovering addict trying to undo the damage of her past.

Michael Anthony Rawlins (Intelligence), Kim Roberts (Im Not There), Mpho Koaho (Flashpoint) and series co-creator Andy Marshall (The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico) also star. Michael Beach (ER, Third Watch) guest stars as gospel music mover and shaker Rev. Isaiah Hunter.

Does God bless America?

In the U.S., faith and politics make strange bedfellows. Ralph Benmerguis new series God Bless America looks at the highly charged relationship between church and state

Premieres Jan. 19 on VisionTV

Why are 50 million Americans making Jesus Christ their commander in chief? Host Ralph Benmergui in Episode One of God Bless America

If Jesus were the commander in chief, would there be poverty in the United States? Cathryn Hazouri, American Civil Liberties Union

******

Is God an American?

U.S. politicians invoke the Almighty so often that its hard not to picture his robed and bearded personage behind the mighty desk in the Oval Office. When did it become obligatory for Presidents to end every speech with the words God bless America? Why do so many Americans believe that their country enjoys the Lords special favour?

These are questions that have long fascinated award-winning Canadian broadcast journalist Ralph Benmergui. In God Bless America, a new six-part documentary series for VisionTV, he visits our southern neighbour to learn how and why religious faith has come to play such an important role in the political life of the United States.

VisionTV presents God Bless America on Mondays, starting Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT. The programs premiere is part of a series of special broadcasts on faith and politics, marking the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Barack Obama.

God Bless America is written and hosted by Ralph Benmergui, and directed by Allan Novak the same creative team that produced the acclaimed world premiere series Ralph Benmergui: My Israel and 5 Seekers for VisionTV.

The American Constitution may separate church and state, but in practice that dividing line is often hard to discern. Indeed, it is almost impossible to imagine Americans electing a president who professes no religious faith.

The 50-million-strong Evangelical Christian movement, in particular, has exercised enormous influence over U.S. policy on everything from stem cell research to relations with Israel. However, the ascension of Barack Obama may signal a decline in the political power of the Christian right.

In God Bless America, Ralph Benmergui travels across the United States from the Virginia campus of Americas most important Evangelical university, to the streets of Denver during the Democratic National Convention to meet the men and women who are at the heart of the religious debate within American political life.

Benmergui encounters a remarkable array of individuals on his journey from punk rock evangelists to Muslim hip-hoppers, radical atheists to born-again teenagers and discovers that the relationship between church and state in the U.S. is even more complex, and more emotionally charged, than most Canadians imagine.

God Bless America is presented by Seekers Television and VisionTV. Allan Novak and Ralph Benmergui are the Executive Producers. Joan Jenkinson is the Executive Producer for VisionTV.

I noticed the Vision TV web-site removed the 1 minute 47 second clip which introduced the Inspirational Leaders documentary on the Aga Khan. It was a very nice trailer (better than the one on the films official web-site in my opinion) and I'm wondering if you can put it back up? You could post it here otherwise - I know it will generate a LOT of interest.
