TEMPERAMENT
********************************
In psychology, temperament is the innate aspect of an individual's personality, such as introversion or extroversion. Temperament is defined as that part of the personality which is genetically based. Along with character, and those aspects acquired through learning, the two together are said to constitute personality.
********************************
The American Temperament Test Society was created to reflect the typical behavior of breeds labeled aggressive. This was an attempt to prevent breeds from falling victim to bad legislation. The dogs are placed in a number of unexpected situations as they are being walked through the park. This helps breeders and owners choose a dog that best fits their lifestyle. (atts.org)
ACCORDING TO THE ATTS AS OF DECEMBER 2007 THESE ARE THE TEMPERAMENT TEST RESULTS. LISTED ARE THE BREEDS AND THE % PASSED.

TODAY, APBTs ARE NO MORE DANGEROUS THAN ANY OTHER DOG IN THEIR WEIGHT RANGE. IN FACT, ACCORDING TO THOSE STATS THEY ARE ACTUALLY LESS DANGEROUS THAN A LARGE NUMBER OF OTHER POPULAR BREEDS. The fact is that aggression can be bred out as easily as it is bred in. Pit Bull type dogs are highly trainable and yes, potentially dangerous if trained to be so. (Do a quick read on conditioning, Ivan Pavlov) On the other hand American Pit bull terriers and Pit Bull Types have become well known as search and rescue dogs, narcotics dogs working hard to fight the war on drugs in America and they are also trianed therapy dogs used as aids in the rehabilitation of people like those who survived such disasters as 911. Often referred to as The Nanny Dog, American pit Bull Terriers have earned that title by being great family pets. They are especially safe with children, a fact that dates all the way back to the birth of our country. APBT and Pit Bull types have played a positive role in American history which should have secured them a certain level of respect by now. Instead they are fighting for their lives in a country they helped protect.

EXPLOITATION
*******************************
Now let me ask you, what dog in the same weight range as the American Pit Bull Terrier would not be potentially dangerous--if trained to be so? Answer, N*O*N*E! Dogs are what we make of them and nothing else. Unless genetically bred specifically for aggression, dogs are not born savages. Criminals who exploit these animals for sport, entertainment and financial gain need to be stopped in order to protect the safety of our human and canine society. Training a dog to be vicious is like having an unlicensed weapon in the hands of a maniac. Although we need a solution for this problem, it is completely unfair to categorize the responsible pet owners with people capable of such cruelty.

MEDIA MESS
********************************
It is believed by many that all Pit Bulls and Pit Bull-Type dogs are equally dangerous. Words like VICIOUS and UNPREDICTABLE are constantly used by the media when describing these dogs, while cleverly omitting key points leading up to the event at hand. Many times these missing facts are vital aspects to reporting an incident accurately, there for without them these reports become bias. This creates a false sense of fear among viewers as a result of limited information. Unfortunately, due to this manipulative type of reporting the breeds' image has suffered greatly.
Sadly, in many cities worldwide Pit Bull-Type dogs are banned from ownership regardless of temperament. This blanket legislation sweeping over the globe like wild fire is known as breed specific legislation or BSL. For some people it seems like a good solution to control dangerous dogs in an attempt to decrease the annual number of dog bites. however we must also consider what happens to the millions of well-behaved pets living in perfect harmony with society. Should they be banned as well, just for fitting the visual profile?
In reality, not many people consider this dark aspect of BSL because it has become a common assumption that one Pit Bull is as vicious as the next. The truth is, that unless every dog in the universe is banned, dog bites will continue to occur, which concludes that BSL ultimately solves nothing.
In the end full responsibility lays in the owners hands. Any dog can bite, but not all dogs are aggressive. It is every dog owner's JOB to train and socialize their pet to ensure that it will not cause harm to other dogs and people in their community. Owning a pet is a commitment that must be respected.

ADVICE
********************************
If you can't handle the responsibility, my advice to you is...don't have pets and definitely don't have children!
********************************
FEAR FACTOR
********************************
A conditioned reflex is learned, either through negative or positive stimuli. The fear of snakes is a learned reflex, as young children who would play with snakes and other reptiles with innocent fascination are soon taught to fear by example or stimuli i.e., a mother screams and pulls her child away from a harmless garter snake, reinforcing the gesture with a statement such as: You could have been bitten! This is not my opinion, it is fact, to read more about this topic go to:

Books:
**LOOK OUT FOR MY BOOK** COMING SOON!
A few good books about Pit Bulls both written by: Joe Stahlkuppe 1) The Pit Bull Terrier Handbook 2) American Pit Bull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers.
Another great book is the Mini Encyclopedia of Dog Training and Behavior by: Colin Tennant. I've just finished reading a very informative book entitled Fatal Dog Attacks, by Karen Delise (published by Anubis, 2002). It's a study of all of the fatal dog attacks in the U.S. between 1965 and 2001. The total number of victims is 431. A total of 37 breeds have killed people in those years in the US. Included in the list of breeds which have killed are such unlikely candidates as the Westie, the Irish Setter, the Sainte Bernard, the benevolent Newfoundland, the Brittany Spaniel, the Airedale and even a Pomeranian-cross...yes a Pomeranian! Each of these breeds has killed once. The cute little Dachsund - yes! (The weiner dog) has actually killed three times!! I know how surprised you are...I was too.
