Help Me Get to Davos Unculture... - 10,895 views - 5 months ago
UPDATE: I was *not* chosen to go to Davos. Thanks to everyone who helped make this THE MOST DEMOCRATICALLY SUPPORTED ENTRY about Davos and the World Economic Forum.
---------------------

Help Me Get to Davos: About one-third of the evaluation of each submission is based on the response from the YouTube community. So every positive rating, comment, and view brings me one step closer to being the guy they pick to go to Davos. [EDIT: Although this was in the rules, the submission that was ultimately chosen as the winner had little or no support from the YouTube community.]

Given my experience doing this project, I'd like to think I'd be a great representative of the YouTube community at the World Economic Forum. And, if I can make videos from rural Bangladesh doing the same from Switzerland should be a piece of cake :)

Quick Summary for the Davos Committee: Can An Obama Administration Improve the State of the World in 2009? Yes, but he can't do it alone. We live in a community of nations and the United States is but one part of it. We will need support from European leaders, leaders from Russia, China, and (most importantly) the developing world. Because improving the world means addressing global poverty. Failure to do so will create bigger problems that we will just have to deal with down the road.

Music Used is a custom version of "Dropping Out of School" by Brad Sucks (used with permission). Third party photos of the World Economic Forum licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA as posted on Flickr. All YouTubers used in the montage had given consent to their appearance.

This video is licensed under a BY-NC-SA Creative Commons license.

P.S. This video will forever be known to me as the video that caused me to miss watching the inauguration live so that I could get this done by the 11:59 PM CET deadline. :P

P.P.S. Thanks to everyone who subscribed. You've made this THE most popular channel on YouTube on the issue of global poverty. More than any charity or even Bono and The ONE Campaign.

P.P.P.S. I uploaded a 3:00 video, and YouTube first said it was 3:00. Then it changed it to 3:01 and I dunno why.

Thank You YouTube - Project for Awesome Unculture... - 126,888 views - 6 months ago
18 months on a journey that has spanned four continents and has touched countless lives. Oh and there is some dancing in this as well ;-) This video is dedicated to the YouTube Community.

"The Uncultured Project" is just a funny name of the journey I am on to try and help the poorest of the poor. It's less about me and more about the community supporting this. I am not a charity, organization, or anything formal. I know this isn't anything as big as what formal organizations are doing.

Cow Sh*t to Clean Water Unculture... - 50,324 views - 7 months ago
Over 1.1 billion people in the world don't have access to clean drinking water. When I heard of a nanotech water purifier that can be used to purify water from even fecal matter contaminated sources, I couldn't help but test it out the "uncultured" way.

Thanks for getting this on the Digg.com Frontpage everyone! Hope this spreads the word about my project...

The "Uncultured Project" is just a funny name for the journey I've started. It's not a charity, organization, or anything formal like that. I'm just a guy who liquidated his life savings, bought a camera, and went abroad to try and help the poorest of the poor. For more, info check out:

http://uncultured.com

If you would like to fund this project, which is just something I am doing as an individual, please check my donation page at:

http://www.uncultured.com/dona tions

Unless you give me written permission, your donation will NOT be used for personal expenses, equipment, airfare, or anything like that.

This isn't a paid endorsement of LifeStraw Family. Vestergaard Frandsen (the manufacturers of LifeStraw Family) helped me come to Kenya but I was under no obligation to endorse them or their products. For more information about the LifeStraw Family, check out:

http://lifestraw.com

The LifeStraw Family uses nanotechnology (called hollow tubes) to filter water down to 25 nanometers and meets US EPA guidelines as a microbiological water purifier. They claim that one LifeStraw Family can purify enough water for a family of five for up to three years.

For those asking for tech info, here are the results from a study by the University of Arizona:

Sacrifices, Challenges, & Opportunities Unculture... - 33,392 views - 7 months ago
The decision to come back home for a break was not a choice I made lightly. It was only in packing up to go home, that I realized how much I had to sacrifice in order to do this project. This video takes a slightly sadder tone to reflect the kind of feelings I had as I landed in Hong Kong on my way back home (this was before the Tour de Nerdfighting).

If you would like to fund this project, which is just something I am doing as an individual, please check my donation page at:

http://www.uncultured.com/dona tions

Unless you give me written permission, your donation will NOT be used for personal expenses, equipment, airfare, or anything like that.

Since I dont use donations to pay for my living expenses (or to buy the airplane tickets I needed to fly home), I've completely emptied out my life savings doing this project. My parents were dipping into their own savings to help me do this project but with the downturn in the economy, they dont have much savings themselves anymore.

The title for the video is a reference to some of the hurdles I had to face during this project. That includes the hospitalization of my mom (who originally came with me as a translator) due to Dengue Fever, the floods, the riots, the military curfew, the cyclone, the earthquake, the minor surgery I had, and now this recent problem I discovered about having iron poisoning/overload from drinking the metal-heavy water common in Bangladesh.

Tour de Nerdfighting Unculture... - 40,007 views - 7 months ago
Sometimes things just come to together. I came home to visit my family and fix some broken equipment - but I ended up being able to do some awesome things. I got to meet Hank and John Green and the Nerdfighter community for the first time. And together we'll be raising money for Save the Children USA.

The money raised goes to help pay for what you guys vote on from my Challenge Poverty video. Hopefully this means I might be able to do more than I had originally budgeted for. You guys get to vote on what I do (just leave a comment or video response on my previous video) and the money raised during the Tour de Nerdfighting goes straight to Save the Children (no PayPal fees and I don't have to touch a dime!).

Here are the last three stops where you can donate to Save the Children to help fund Challenge Poverty.

November 10th - Charlottesville, VA
November 11th - Lancaster, PA
November 12th - Westport, CT (Home of Save the Children!)

Money has already been raised for Save the Children (to fund Challenge Poverty) at the following stops on the Tour de Nerdfighting:

November 2nd - Plano, TX
November 2nd - Oklahoma City, OK
November 3rd - St. Louis, MO
November 4th - Greenwood, IN
November 5th - Louisville, KY
November 6th - Knoxville, TN
November 7th - Gadsen, AL
November 9th - Newport News, VA

Thanks to all the Nerdfighters who donated! Most of us are just poor students - but it really does seem like the generosity of Nerdfigthers is almost endless.

Challenge Poverty (with YouTube & Save the Children) Unculture... - 136,346 views - 9 months ago
Please read the sidebar for important information! Voting is now closed - thanks to everyone who voted!

You get to decide what I do with Save the Children. There are five options and there is enough money to do either one big thing or 2 or 3 of the smaller options. The money for this comes from the hundreds of people from around the world who have already donated to me via PayPal.

"The Uncultured Project" is just a funny name for my work trying to help those less fortunate in developing countries. It's not a charity, NGO, or anything like that. It's about what we as individuals united together can do to make a difference in the world. Find out more at:

http://uncultured.com and
http://youtube.com/UnculturedP roject

DON'T feel obliged to donate to me - I'm not a charity! I'm just a guy. You'll find more information here:

http://uncultured.com/donation s

HOW TO VOTE: You don't need to have made a donation in order to vote! Make a VIDEO RESPONSE and let me know which option you'd like me to do! You can also leave a text comment if you prefer, but I'd like to give more weight to video responses.

THE OPTIONS:

- Build a Deep Tube Well
- Build a Pond Sand Filter (aka PSF or Biosand Filter)
- Provide 80 Salter Scales to Fight Malnutrition
- Build a School Latrine
- Repair a School Damaged by Cyclone Sidr

IMPORTANT NOTE: There is enough money to rebuild the school OR 2 or 3 of any of the other options.

I'd like to thank Save the Children USA for their assistance and support in helping me to do this. I'd also like to give my heartfelt thanks to the Save the Children staff at the following offices: Westport (USA), Dhaka, Barisal, and Barguna.

I'd also like to thank Jamison Young, Stefan D, and Josh Woodward for lending their music for this video.

http://jamyoung.net/

Stefan D ("Best Mind")
http://www.furaxe.qc.ca/stefan d/

Josh Woodward ("Shower Scene Instrumental")

Last but not least, I'd like to thank the following YouTubers for collaborating with me on this video:

http://www.youtube.com/user/An gelLife999

http://www.youtube.com/user/Ac eswolf
http://www.youtube.com/user/xo kiikster
http://www.youtube.com/user/Ma ddog53
http://www.youtube.com/user/vl ogbrothers

I apologize for not making a video earlier. It took a while to make this happen! It also didn't help that my 3-month old LaCie harddrive died with a lot of important footage on it. I was already making this video when it died and had to start from scratch. Don't. Buy. LaCie.

Subtitle Typo: The subtitles for the lady speaking about the deep tube well was meant to read as "It feels good to have this because all of us can use this TO drink and wash our food & dishes". This was a bit difficult to translate and I had to actually consult two different people to help me translate this. In the process I seemed to have overlooked this grammatical typo. Sorry to any English teachers out there.

About "Challenge Poverty": There is actually a small registered charity in Scotland that goes by the name "Challenge Poverty". This video isn't about those guys. I came up with the name "Challenge Poverty" after being inspired by some youtubers who have put up "challenge" videos - like "Challenge Adam" and "Challenge Charlie" :)

Using YouTube with a Purpose - Helping Kids in Bangladesh Unculture... - 40,969 views - 1 year ago
"This is probably the coolest thing that has ever happened to me." - Hank Green

If it wasn't for YouTube, I couldn't have done this.

It's thanks to YouTube that I was able to team up with Rick Davis - an American school teacher in Bangladesh who got in contact with me after finding one of my videos on YouTube. He helped pay and plan this trip this rural village in a military-controlled and malaria heavy part of Bangladesh. And, of course, I couldn't have done this without the support of John and Hank Green and all the Nerdfigthers out there.

Hank Green's donation went to Rithanu - an 11 year old malaria survivor. Hank's YouTube channel is:

http://youtube.com/vlogbrother s

Patrick's donation went to help 7 year old Jack (who, if I heard correctly from the locals, is also a malaria survivor). Patrick's YouTube channel is:

http://youtube.com/hyrcan

The donation of a PermaNet (a long lasting insecticide treated mosquito net) was made possible with the help of Vestergaard-Frandsen. Vestergaard-Frandsen manufactures PermaNets along with other products that help control the spread of disease in the developing world. You can find more information at:

http://www.PermaNet.com
http://www.Vestergaard-Frandse n.com
http://YouTube.com/Vestergaard Frandsen

I was neither paid nor required to endorse their products. I endorse them because their products work - I've witnessed this first hand. If you'd like to donate one of their products, check out my recommended charities list:

The music for this video was provided by some amazingly talented artists who release their music for free under the Creative Commons. The music used in this video (in order used) include:

Full Disclosure Regarding Rick Davis: Rick Davis (the teacher at the American International School in Dhaka) is associated with this NGO and helped design the sponsorship program. His involvement with this NGO is voluntary and unpaid. He was not paid nor financially benefits from endorsing this NGO's sponsorship program.

Hank, John, and a Journey Through the Chittagong Hill-Tracts Unculture... - 27,273 views - 1 year ago
This is what I mean when I say "YouTube with a Purpose".

It's thanks to YouTube that John Green (in Indianapolis) and Hank Green (in Missoula, Montana) were able to connect to me here in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Using a donation from Hank, I was able to help a needy family in a remote (and military controlled) region of Bangladesh called the Chittagong Hill-Tracts. The journey was quite long and this video helps the highlight how remote this region is.

If this is the first time you've seen one of my videos, here are the basics: I'm not an NGO, charity, or someone looking to become a YouTube celebrity. This is just my way of inspiring others, paying it forward, and changing the conversation about global poverty. You can learn more about my work at my website:

http://uncultured.com

I can't thank Hank and John enough for all the support they've lent. Their channel, of course, is:

To keep this video short, I had to cut a lot out. Here are is the playlist of deleted scenes for this video:

http://www.youtube.com/view_pl ay_list?p=A1F0B49B1177351C

The internet connection here in Bangladesh is horrible for doing stuff like uploading videos to YouTube. It takes a lot of hard work and I couldn't do it without a lot of help from friends. This video was uploaded with the help of my friend Alan. Check his channel out here:

Paying It Forward Unculture... - 9,788 views - 1 year ago
In this episode, I talk about starting to accept donations, paying it forward, and what it's like to talk to high school students at the American International School in Dhaka about The Uncultured Project.

For more information on my work in Bangladesh, check out my blog:

http://uncultured.com

After talking it over with a lot of friends, I've decided to start accepting donations for my work here. For more information as to how I will spend that money, or if you want to make a donation, check out:

http://uncultured.com/donation s

Please don't feel obligated to make a donation.

I've been trying to change the conversation about global poverty with my work on YouTube. Let's start by using YouTube in a new way. if anyone who has made a donation - please consider posting a video response. Include your PayPal Confirmation Number in the Sidebar and maybe write (in the sidebar) and/or talk (in the video) a little bit about why you decided to donate to me instead of a charity or NGO. I'll try my best to watch as many as I can even though the internet connection in Bangladesh is worse than dialup.

If you prefer to donate to an established charity (which is also tax-deductible), check out:

http://uncultured.com/charitie s

Full Disclosure: Since uploading this video, I received an email from one of the teachers at this school who points out that the cost of tuition is around $20,000 - not $26,000. This is the base cost and does not include additional costs such as extra curricular activities. Either way, I still couldn't afford to go to this place...

This video uses a special instrumental version of "Never Get Out" by Brad Sucks. You can download the full song (licensed under Creative Commons) at:

Thanks to Brad for a custom version of this song.

World Malaria Day Unculture... - 15,739 views - 1 year ago
Did you know that it would only take ONE DAY'S worth of Pentagon funding to provide protection against malaria for every man, woman, and child in Africa for five years? Don't take my word for it - economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs (author of "The End of Poverty") did the math.

April 25th is World Malaria Day. To help commemorate this day, I decided to share some of the work I have been doing here in Bangladesh that have focused on fighting malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. Some of this might be a bit familiar (from previous videos) and the rest is either previously unseen or new footage.

For more information on my work in Bangladesh, check out my blog:

http://uncultured.com

For information on Vestergaard-Frandsen and their long-lasting, tear-resistant, dirt-resistant, insecticide treated mosquito net, check out:

http://www.permanet.com
http://www.vestergaard-frandse n.com

My sincerest thanks goes to the staff at Vestergaard-Frandsen (especially their Swiss and Indian branches) for making this possible.

Full Disclosure: Although Vestergaard-Frandsen donated several items for me to distribute to the needy as part of my project, I was neither paid nor required to endorse their projects. I recommend their products without reservation and encourage others to look for charities that distribute products by Vestergaard-Frandsen (such as PermaNet).

For a list of a few charities that do distribute such products, check out this link:

Earth graphics were rendered using Google Earth Pro (trial version) and screen capture software. Why is it that the only version of Google Earth that exports video cost $400? They don't even offer student and/or non-profit discounts. :-(

The Struggle to Afford High School Textbooks in Bangladesh Unculture... - 67,570 views - 1 year ago
A year's worth of textbooks for a student in Grade Nine in rural Bangladesh cost about $13 US Dollars. But many high school students drop out because they can't afford to buy them.

In this short video, I meet a Grade Nine student struggling to buy his textbooks for the year. I buy the books for him and - to show his thanks - he sings a song.

Here is some information in Bangladesh Rickshaw Drivers:

About Me: My name is Shawn & I'm a bit uncultured - here's why...

In 2006, I was a grad student at Notre Dame. Then I heard Dr. Jeffrey Sachs (author of the book "The End of Poverty") talk about how it's our generation's responsibility to end poverty.

I withdrew from grad school, packed my bags, grabbed my laptop and bought a camcorder and then flew to Bangladesh to see how I could make a difference among some of the world's poorest.

I'm not a charity or anything formal. This is my unemployed, unpaid, and "uncultured" journey to make the world a better place by helping the poorest of the poor.
