The first year, 1996, CART tried to run their own 500 mile race at Michigan to serve as a boycot of Indy. They started the race 3 wide, just like Indy. Only problem is that on the initial start, there was a pile up in turn four which took out several cars. The race was red flagged and then resumed. While it did resume, the lap one crash was a black-eye on all of the drivers who were supposed to be the greatest of the time. Crashing on the start made some believe otherwise.

Aside from that, attendence for CART at Michigan began declining soon after, as well as attendance for Indy. With the declining attendance, CART seased racing at Michigan in 2001. IndyCar ran at Michigan from 2002 til 2007, but with the same lack of getting a crowd. That is why it is not on the 08 schedule, but there is talk of Michigan coming back on the schedule in 2009.
