DPP ECFA referendum ad - with English titles TimMaddog - 1,572 views - 2 weeks ago

Against the wishes of the people of Taiwan, the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) has been working to sign an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with China. They have tried to sell the Taiwanese public the flawed idea that only China can save Taiwan's economy. They are dangerously wrong.

In addition to a complete lack of transparency about the content or process of such an agreement, Ma Ying-jeou himself has lied to the public about it. Ma says:
- - -
In an ECFA, there won't be any conditions such as "one country, two systems."
- - -

In the next part of the ad, Ma says that:
- - -
Since it doesn't affect sovereignty, a referendum is not necessary.
- - -

However, he approves of a non-sovereignty-affecting referendum regarding *gambling* in Penghu. Can you say "Yet another Ma Ying-jeou double standard"?

Getting back to why I say Ma *lied* to the public, listen to what Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (溫家寶) says about an ECFA:
- - -
Promoting the signing of a cross-Strait [sic] will certainly bring about complete unification of the motherland [sic]
- - -

It will *most certainly* affect Taiwan's sovereignty, and I believe that Mr. Ma knows this very well.

Next, we see Taiwan's Premier, Liu Chao-shiuan (劉兆玄), playing the voters for fools:
- - -
How will be able to sign an ECFA if we tell you what's in it?
- - -

The narrator and text say in the last portion of the ad:
- - -
The DPP believes that to sign an ECFA with China, it must be presented to the public via a referendum. [We are] seeking 100,000 people who are willing to secure Taiwan's last line of defense [by signing a petition to start the referendum].

ECFA requires a referendum!

Mr. Chuang wants green media to stop saying "mainland" TimMaddog - 158 views - 3 weeks ago
A Mr. Chuang from Taichung called in to the political talk show New Taiwan Go Go Go (新台灣加油) on June 13, 2009 to express his dismay at so-called "green" (Taiwan-centric) media using the term "mainland" (大陸) when they mean "China."

The term is appropriate in Hong Kong or Macau, because they are both part of China. But when the mainland-island dichotomy is applied to Taiwan, it is wrong.

Why, then, do people do it? The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has brainwashed people with this idea that "my country" (我國) -- by which they mean the ROC -- includes all of what is now the PRC, plus Tibet and even Outer Mongolia. They crazily think that this "ROC" includes Taiwan, too.

Main point: Don't say "mainland" when you mean "China."

NOTE: There's an edit at around the 0:19 mark to remove the uncomfortable delay before Mr. Chuang gets to his main point.

Chen Shui-bian TalkAsia interview (01-2007) Intro TimMaddog - 1,320 views - 2 years ago
First airing on Saturday, January 27, 2007, this TalkAsia interview with Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian showed his and the people of Taiwan's side of a story which is usually covered by the international media from Beijing's perspective.

President Chen spoke in Mandarin throughout (think the pan-blues will applaud?), and you can hear a good bit of the original audio if you listen carefully, but there is a voice throughout giving a mostly-accurate English-language translation.

Who are the real "troublemakers"? Both China and the pan-blue opposition in Taiwan who have clearly ruled out giving the people of Taiwan a say in their own future.

Ma Ying-jeou TalkAsia interview (02-2007) Part 2/3 TimMaddog - 4,300 views - 2 years ago
First airing on Saturday, February 3, 2007, this TalkAsia interview with Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman Ma Ying-jeou had host Anjali Rao fluffing Ma, pushing his "Mr. Clean" propaganda, and letting him show himself generally talking like a fool with things like (barely a parody-phrase) "I couldn't possibly be guilty of anything because I donated blood a whole bunch of times, and I also donated to charity a lot of that money that rightfully belongs to the taxpayers ot Taiwan." He did say one thing correctly, although it was probably an accident: "No doubt Taiwan is a democratic country."

Chairman Mao-without-the-o spoke in English/Newspeak throughout, and you can know what he's really saying if you listen carefully and frequently visit the Taiwan Matters blog.

The Ma Ying-jeou 42-minute flip-flop TimMaddog - 3,604 views - 1 year ago
During the February 29, 2008 Central Election Commission's (CEC) Taiwan Presidential Campaign Forum, the Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) candidate, Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) remarkably said these two completely opposite things just 42 minutes apart:
1) I have said many times before that I do not support recognition of Chinese academic qualifications
2) I support recognition of Chinese academic qualifications

Does Ma think the voters of Taiwan aren't paying attention?

FURTHER READING:
Ma's spokespersons say the quote is incomplete. (See the following link.) I say that even with the "qualifying remarks" tacked onto the latter statement, it again reveals Ma's inability to stick firmly with any given position.

Can you trust Ma Ying-jeou's abilities? TimMaddog - 3,086 views - 1 year ago
During the time when Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) -- the Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) candidate in Taiwan's 2008 presidential election -- was mayor of Taipei, some incredibly bad things happened. Yet Ma counts many of these things among his "achievements."

Among them are the handling of the aftermath of Typhoon Nari and the complete failure of the rebuilt Jiancheng Circle Market. (Not surprising for someone who graduated from Harvard's law school but never passed the bar exam.) Jiancheng Circle was Taipei's oldest night market.

This commercial by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislative Caucus also shows the emptiness that remained after Ma's government "renovated" the Longshan Temple Underground Mall and Ximen Market.

At the end of the commercial, you can hear Ma's voice saying, "We should elect a president who can get things done, one who can help the economy improve." The onscreen text reads, "Do you believe in Ma Ying-jeou's 'abilities'?"

Taipei's oldest food market, the Jiancheng Circle (建成圓環), enters the history books today after a massive renovation project by the Taipei City Government failed to revive the market's fortunes.

The city spent more than NT$200 million (US$6.17 million) to turn the market into a modern, two-story building housing 25 food booths and a performing arts center. But it finally conceded that the project was a failure.

The market failed to regain its competitiveness because of the building's design and problems with vendors, the Taipei City Markets Administration Office said yesterday in a written statement.

The Jiancheng Circle, located at the intersection of Chongqing N Rd and Nanjing W Rd, was once a city landmark. At its peak during the 1960s and 1970s, there were about 200 booths selling such popular snacks such as glutinous rice dumplings and oyster omelettes. But devastating fires in 1993 and 1999 contributed to the market's decline.

In 2001, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) made the reconstruction of the circle one of the mainstays of his bid to revitalize the city's older districts.

It wasn't until the Taipei City Government demolished the Guanghua bridge and the old market last year with plans to relocate the stores that vendors began to worry that the new modern shopping mall will scare shoppers away and make Guanghua the next Jiancheng Circle -- Taipei's oldest night market that was forced to shut down this July after the city government's reconstruction project failed to attract crowds.

The Longshan Temple Underground Mall and Ximen Market shared similar fates, as the renovation projects only expedited the decline of business in the area.

Huang Rei-mao (黃瑞茂), a professor of architecture at Tamkang University, said Ma's urban renewal plan failed to understand the average person's needs, and did not take historical, cultural and emotional aspects of locations into consideration when setting up the projects.

For some contrast, take a look at what Frank Hsieh (who actually *passed* the bar exam) was able to get done while he was mayor of Kaohsiung:

Ma Ying-jeou's double standards TimMaddog - 9,149 views - 2 years ago
* In his own words
On the Wednesday, February 14, 2007 broadcast of Talking Show (大話新聞), host Cheng Hung-yi (鄭弘儀) presented several clips of Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) which provide an interesting contrast between his attitude when talking about his political opponents and when the shoe is on the other foot.

The first set of clips shows Ma speaking just prior to the indictment against Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) wife Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍) and shortly afterwards. These clips are then juxtaposed with the words and actions of both Ma and his supporters just one day after Ma himself was indicted.

* Under Ma's thumb
In the first part, Chairman Mao-without-the-o says that President Chen would "die a horrible death" if he didn't step down on his own. http://tinyurl.com/2ghbsu (What did Ma do? First of all, he waited to be indicted -- but that's not all. Just 2 hours later, he declared his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election. http://tinyurl.com/yp6vmj )

Referring to the ongoing cases surrounding Chen, Ma says (taking on the president's voice and ironically pointing at himself), "If my associates are corrupt, I need to take all of the responsibility. I can't blame anyone else, because I am the emperor." Ma says, "With problems like this affecting Chen's family, how can he talk to me about 'the law'?"

* Rules are for other people
In the second segment -- with images from one day after Ma himself was indicted -- members of his party cheer, "Ma Ying-jeou, jiayou! (an expression of encouragement)" and "KMT, victory!" despite their party rules saying that an indicted member can't run for office. Well, if that was true to begin with, it's not anymore. They changed their rules in a move of desperation just hours after Ma was indicted. (Even though President Chen's wife hasn't yet been convicted, the DPP suspended her membership after the indictment, following their own rules the way they should.)

Next, KMT member Li Keng Kuei-Fang (厲耿桂芳) -- who is currently on the Taipei City Council -- screeches (and I'm talking "fingernails-across-the- blackboard" here) that Ma is "like Jesus being nailed to the cross" and that Ma is "the greatest person in history." (Yes, she actually said those things!) They've mobilized a nationwide signature drive to get people to "swear" support for Ma. Check out the gangster-looking guys with the black gloves accusing the other side of having "black hands" controlling the judiciary. (Hogwash!) Be sure to notice how "enthusiastically" these guys throw down those black gloves.

* What went around came back around
Remember all that redshirt garbage about "not distinguishing between blue (Ma's side) and green (Chen's side)" (不分藍綠)? http://tinyurl.com/258b59 Remember this picture? http://tinyurl.com/2bejag Which direction are those thumbs facing now? Up their you-know-whats!

Can you spot the double standards of Ma and his supporters? I knew that you could.

personally, i think the if president chen really did 'rob the taiwanese of their money', then he really should go to jail. BUT HELLO PEOPLE, THAT STILL DOESNT DENY THE FACT THE KMT IS A PARTY MADE UP OF MINI HITLERS AND RICH BITCHES! the only reason they're so rich in the first place is because THEY ROBBED the taiwanese of their property after killing them using barbaric methods.

And where do these comments about Japan keep coming from? Oh, yeah -- the twisted imaginations of the Chen haters!
