This video shows the limitations of using older CMOS technology. The Sony's I used were 4:2:0 as far as chroma goes and in low light conditions due to information loss you can truly see how you can achieve a truly dark brooding look at the expense of sharpness.

One of my workarounds was to denoise the footage, lighten THEN darken and add a grain back to the footage to capture the vitality of live footage. It gives very nice results but with proper cameras using a 4:2:2 chroma this would be absolutely incredible looking footage. At this point I will downplay my own work and say I am happy with it based on the technical limitations and I dare anyone else to use a Sony A1U the way I did.

The production of the beat was by Shibastik and I did a post afterwards for the actual video. All the effects are in After Effects and stills in Photoshop as is to be expected.

Two way lighting was used when necessary to allow the roughness of our locations to shine through and to give realistic shadows and syncing was done through the audio channel as opposed to video.

This was also shot using a Digital 35mm device that in itself presented new challenges like having to keep focus on a subject while moving, keeping the subject lit while under high aperture and ensuring that the frame rate was high enough there was no vibration in the shot due to technical limitations. All in all a good test for our new video. In response to why you would have to use a high aperture, the depth of field at 2.2 with the lens I used had a focus depth of around 4-5 inches, imagine losing focus if you moved your camera that much or the subject moved! This is why it was so hard to light scenes and why my cameras became technologically bound. (less info)
