In the spring and summer of 1968, at merely 15 years old I had the unforgettable fortune of being David Peel's lead guitarist of choice during some of his now famous free concerts and jam sessions in Washington Square, Tompkins Square, Central Park, and the streets of New York City. I would wake up every morning with uncontrollable excitement at the thought of jamming along with this inimitable artist in front of hundreds of people every day. I was always in total awe, and in a complete state of pure nirvana, as I would arrive at the park, and David would comand the massive crowds to part and let "that kid in here!", so that I could take my place beside him and wail away in sheer teen abandon.
Peel, the legendary poet/musician/singer/songwriter/activist/charlatan and champion of free speech, is probably best known as being the man who introduced John Lennon to the New York City underground street scene. In fact, Lennon devoted the first stanza of his song, "New York City" to David Peel. Later, during their televised appearance on the David Frost Show in 1972, John and Yoko let David have the spotlight, choosing instead to perform behind him, with David's band, The Lower East Side. David Peel is widely regarded by many as one of the earliest founders of the punk, indie, alternative, and do-it-yourself musical and lifestyle movements. Americas "Rock n Roll Outlaw" has always been outspoken on numerous issues, and has served as an authority and consultant on all things Sixties, Hippie, and radical counterculture.
He went on to record numerous albums, some of which were produced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono themselves for Apple Records. The former Beatle confided in Andy Warhols "INTERVIEW" magazine, that "producing David Peel was the highest point in his life".
David has shared the stage with greats such as: Alice Cooper, Dr. John, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Berry, Rod Stewart, B.B. King, Frank Zappa, Iggy Pop, John Lee Hooker, Arlo Guthrie, Stevie Wonder, Archie Shepp, Joan Baez, The Ramones, and countless others. In addition, he has appeared in several movies throughout his career. David's independent company, Orange Records, has produced well over seventy-five albums, cassette tapes, video tapes, and cds including the Whole Rock Catalog and The Rock Street Journal magazine. Some of the artists appearing on the Orange Records roster and catalog have included: John Lennon, Yoko Ono, G.G. Allin, Wayne Kramer, Mozarts People, Leslie Fradkin, Captain Crunch, and many others.
Nowadays, David Peel can still be seen on the concert, college, and nightclub circuit in and around New York City as well as at political rallies, community events, and on the streets and in the parks of the city. He is regularly a special guest performer appearing anually at the John Lennon memorial bash on John's birthday at Strawberry Fields in Central park. In 2006, I reunited with David.
