Most artists only dream of following their passion. Tadashi Shoji, founder and chief designer of Tadashi Collections, is the exception. Born and raised in Sendai, Japan, he began painting and drawing at a young age. Restricted by the provincial outlook and traditions of his hometown, Tadashi ventured to Tokyo, where he studied fine art. His talent was soon recognized and he was recommended for an apprenticeship with Japan's leading contemporary artist, Jiro Takamatsu, who is credited with leading the way for the modern art movement in Japan during the sixties.

It was during his work with Takamatsu that Tadashi became intrigued with New York City, then considered the forefront of the contemporary art scene. A twist of fate landed him closer to the Big Apple upon a visit to Los Angeles. While attending university there to further his artistic development, he discovered fashion design and awakened a lifelong passion.

A precocious student, Tadashi was presented with the unique opportunity to work with famed costume designer, Bill Whitten. In the flamboyant seventies, every major recording star was demanding a Whitten original. Tadashi found himself working with A-list stars such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Neil Diamond, The Jacksons, and Earth Wind & Fire. Considering his artistic background, he was delighted to have a hand in shaping popular culture.

After earning his degree in Fashion Design, Tadashi began working at a prominent clothing manufacturer where he climbed the ranks for several years. Troubled by the fact that women had few options for special occasion dresses in the contemporary market, Tadashi identified a niche and set out on his own.

Armed with years of experience and an irrepressible energy, his solo venture met with immediate success. In 1982, the collection was picked up by Bergdorf Goodman. Saks Fifth Avenue soon followed. Today, almost 25 years after its inception, TADASHI collections are available in more than 4,000 upscale department stores and specialty boutiques worldwide. His designs have won a loyal following with well-dressed women worldwide, including celebrities such as Claudia Schiffer, Minnie Driver, Celine Dion, Shakira, Tyra Banks, Bai Ling, Queen Latifah and Halle Berry.
