Bound by Promises: Contemporary Slavery in Rural Brazil Part 1 of 2 TVEAPfilms - 4 views - 1 day ago
Every year, more than 25,000 workers are enslaved by landowners in rural Brazil, mostly in the Amazon region. This video tells the story of men who set out in search of work and are taken to isolated ranches, only to find that they have been lured into debt bondage. Forced to do backbreaking work and to live in overcrowded shacks with no running water, they are treated like animals. "A bullet from my shotgun is what you have a right to here, one worker was told. With no way out, they toil in the hope of buying back their freedom.

Nations Zero Part 5 of 5 TVEAPfilms - 0 views - 1 day ago
More people have been killed in conflicts since 1945 than in the two world wars. But the nature of war has changed. Set piece battles between the armies of warring nations are rare.

The face of war now is civil conflict. In Nations Zero we travel to four countries that have recently experienced civil conflict: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia, Rwanda, and Afghanistan.

Overwhelmingly, we find in Nations Zero, the victims are civilians, not soldiers. And they are victims of more than weapons, displacement and disease. They are victims of the damage that civil conflict does to a country's economy.

So, as the UN has recently recognised with the founding of the Peace Commission, peace does not come with the signing of a piece of paper, it comes when there is an investment in sustainable development.

In Nations Zero, Paul Collier - principal author of the World Bank's policy paper Breaking the Conflict Trap - pours scorn on those who argue that war is inevitable.

A Future Within Reach TVEAPfilms - 1 views - 2 days ago
Countries in the Asia Pacific region have committed themselves to pursuing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the world leaders in 2000. Five years on, progress is uneven across the countries and the eight goals - and many challenges remain on the road to the 2015 target.

This video captures highlights of a new report, A Future Within Reach: Reshaping institutions in a region of disparities to meet the Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific, prepared by UNESCAP, UNDP and ADB. Like the report, the film not only identifies the stark problems but also highlights solutions already attempted, as well as choice and options available to countries.

Doctors on the Front Line: SUDAN Part 3 of 3 TVEAPfilms - 8 views - 3 days ago
Episode 2 of our series on the work of Medecins sans Frontieres in hot spots of conflict.
Peace between Khartoum and the SPLA (Sudan's People Liberation Army) in the south of Sudan has brought few benefits so far. There are no roads, cattle and wife-stealing are rife, and famine stalks. Civil conflict has been a barrier to development, including the provision of the most basic services.
In this forbidding environment MSF operates a small hospital in Marial Lou which must cater for the needs of 300,000 people. The biggest challenge here is operating feeding centres with only a third of the food aid the World Food Programme assesses this region requires.
Doctors have noticed a rise in inter-tribal conflict, with food and competition for pasture the main causes.

Women on the Frontline: Morocco Part 3 of 3 TVEAPfilms - 22 views - 5 days ago
Morocco is coming to terms with the human rights abuses of its recent past. Televised testimonies to a truth and reconciliation commission set up by the government have transfixed the nation, unveiling the atrocities committed under King Hassan's 38 year rule. Through the personal testimonies of those who suffered both wrongful imprisonment and torture in the 1970s and 80s, we discover the prominent role women had in resisting repressive rule during the "Iron Fist" era. Women on the Frontline, tells the astonishing stories of two of these women - Fatna El Bouih and Khadija Rouissi - who put their lives on the line to fight for truth, justice and independence, and who survived to pass on their message of hope and endurance to a new generation.

TVE Asia Pacific: Moving images moving people

Television for Education -- Asia Pacific, trading as TVE Asia Pacific (TVEAP) taps the enormous power of moving images and digital media to communicate sustainable development and social issues. A regionally operating media foundation, it works closely with TV broadcasters, civil society groups and educational organisations in the Asia Pacific, home to half of humanity.

TVEAP supports Asian TV journalists and film-makers to tell their stories to local, regional and global audiences, while distributing independent video productions for education, awareness, advocacy and training. It also carries out media training, communication strategy preparation and media research.

Set up in 1996, TVEAP is a non-profit company in Sri Lanka governed by an international Board. Its educational work receives support from development donors, corporate sponsors and foundations but TVEAP content is produced on an editorially independent basis.
