The Sydney Symphony has announced the appointment of American conductor David Robertson as its Chief Conductor and Artistic Director from January 2014. David Robertson is known throughout the world as a consummate musician, masterful programmer and dynamic presence, and has established himself as one of today's most sought after conductors. He is recognized as a passionate and compelling communicator and has forged close relationships with major international orchestras through his exhilarating music-making.
During the course of 2012 we'll be celebrating our 80th anniversary. We've enlisted the help of some high-profile Australians and international stars to wish the orchestra happy birthday. Beginning in 2010 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahler and ending in 2011 when the world marked the centenary of the composer's death, the Cycle saw the orchestra and Principal Conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy perform all 10 of Mahler's symphonies plus a selection of his orchestral songs including 'Song of the Earth.' The YouTube Symphony Orchestra is a global endeavor devoted to sharing the love of music and celebrating humanity's vast creative diversity. 101 musicians from over 30 countries were selected to perform in the orchestra and invited to Sydney, Australia in March, 2011 where they worked with world-renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and received coaching by leading musicians from the world's top orchestras, including the Sydney Symphony. The week culminated in a Grand Finale concert at Sydney Opera House which was live stream to millions around the world.
