StepOne is an initiative of Bhoomika Trust to facilitate job opportunities for persons with disability. Bhoomika Trusts StepOne program facilitates an Work Experience Opportunity for persons with disability who are in the age group of 18-35 years.

Through StepOne, these individuals are provided an opportunity to work for a period of one month in organizations that have previously not employed persons with disability. This enables them to get valuable work experience and also helps them to showcase their skills and abilities in the organizations where they are placed during this period.

The organizations provide them one month work opportunity and a work experience certificate on completion but are not under any obligation to offer the candidate employment at the end of this period. However at the end of one month, if the company is satisfied with the performance of the candidate, they could consider them for employment.

Bhoomika Trust pays the candidate a stipend during this one month work experience opportunity. Bhoomika Trust does not charge the candidate or the potential employer any fee towards this program.

Since October 2007, 31 candidates have benefitted from StepOnes one month work experience opportunity at various organizations in Chennai. Of these, 25 candidates have been offered employment by the organizations that offered them one month work experience.

Currently about 50 persons with visual impairment of both genders in the age group of 18 to 35, with and without formal education have registered with StepOne. They are capable of doing voice based jobs like Customer support / Tele-marketing / Coordinating with drivers / suppliers etc. They can also carry out simple routine jobs in factory/ productions units like counting, packing and sorting. With the aid of JAWS (screen reading software) some of them can also work on computers. All of them can speak Tamil, while some can also speak English. They use Braille for taking down notes/ phone numbers etc. All these candidates are almost independent and commute on their own, anywhere in Chennai.

Organisations can be a part of StepOne program by offering this one-month work experience opportunity to persons with disability and interested individuals with disability can register with Bhoomika Trust to benefit from StepOne.
