I need to adress this : there are words being used in the metal community which have long lost their insult shock value, and terms I`ve grown tired of. I`m not intimating we all use proper grammar, since slang and lingo are everywhere in every culture, but there`s one term in particular that has seen its day and I`m here to bring it to attention and show it for how absurd it is.
"Own" . I often see or hear people say " this band owns you", or, " dude, they fucking own ! " Dudes, no band "owns" me. They may own a house, rent equipment for tours, lease a car or truck to drive to gigs, but no band technically "owns" anyone !. I thought " gay " was overused, but this is far worse. It`s getting old. I`m sure it will be used in this day and age of labels, subgenres and whatnot, but it just makes me laugh whenever I see or hear that word in that context. Hey, I, uh "own" a great deal of things, just like many other people. I know Schmier of Destruction owns a restaurant and I like his band, however, Destruction -or any other band for that matter- doesn`t "owns" me ( or even lease , rent or hold a mortgage on me ) .Let`s try to come up with some more colorful and imaginative words, okay ?
Now, if you`ll excuse me I have to go get in my car to go to work....a car that I, uh, own.
