An orthopaedic surgeon discovered the idea several years ago during a trauma surgery, where a metal reconstruction plate was being used to fix a broken bone. These plates are often bent to match the shape of the bones. The plates are most commonly used at the end of the elbow, knee, or ankle where the bones are curved. After the surgery, a similar plate was bent into a ring. The surgeons wore the ring for several years and found that many people that saw it were intrigued by the use of a surgical plate to make jewelry.
