Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) spoke on the Senate floor today in opposition to an amendment that would strip critical funding for 10 C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft from the Defense Appropriations bill. The C-17s are powered by F-117 Pratt & Whitney engines produced in Middletown, Connecticut.
In urging his colleagues to support the C-17 funding, Dodd spoke about three Pratt & Whitney employees who are part of the workforce in Middletown. As Dodd said in his floor speech, If this amendment prevails, my states largest private employer [United Technologies Corporation] tells me that we stand to lose another 3,000 jobs.
The C-17 is the most reliable aircraft in our arsenal and its also the most versatile, Dodd continued. This amendment would hurt our workers, our troops, and our national security. It is a massive expenditure disguised as a small short-term savings. It is the very definition of cutting off our nose to spite our face. I urge my colleagues to join me in defeating it.

Today Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT) announced he is working on a bill to expand the Presidents ability to sanction Iran as the United States heads towards negotiations with that country. The Senate Banking Committee has jurisdiction over financial and economic sanctions.
If Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons capability, it would pose a significant threat to peace and security in the Middle East, especially to our close ally Israel, said Dodd. That is a threat to both national security and global stability and it cannot be allowed to stand unchallenged.
As Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, I intend to introduce legislation that will arm the administration with the ability to impose tough, targeted sanctions if Iran does not respond to our final diplomatic effort in the coming weeks.

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) today held a press conference at his office in Hartford to discuss a bill he will introduce to curb excessive overdraft fees. When account holders overdraw on their accounts, they are often slapped with fees of upwards of $30. Banks so-called overdraft protection programs enable customers to overdraw their accounts, without their knowledge, when they use checks, electronic transfers, debit card purchases, and ATM withdrawals. Until recently, some banks had policies that allowed them to charge customers up to ten times per day for overdrawing on their accounts.

Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) struck back today at an amendment offered by Senator John McCain (R-AZ) that would have stripped $500,000 of critical federal funding for redevelopment in Waterbury.
This amendment would have stripped Waterbury of half a million dollars of vital federal funding for redevelopment and it deserved to be overwhelmingly defeated. Waterbury - facing a 12.7 percent unemployment rate - is in need of economic development assistance to get back on its feet, and this funding will provide a shot in the arm for the city and the entire Naugatuck Valley.
Senator Dodd requested the funding to help the City of Waterbury revitalize contaminated, blighted areas of the city (commonly referred to as brownfields) for economic development. Waterbury has millions of square feet of unused factory space which should be redeveloped for commercial or other beneficial uses that will bring jobs back to Waterbury.
The amendment offered by Senator McCain would have eliminated funding for three brownfield redevelopment projects funded through the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (HUD) and Related Agencies appropriations bill.
