Importing a horse is not as big of an expense as many feel. The quality of training in Europe easily trumps that of the US trained horses and encourages performance as the horse excels through levels and heights.
A major difference in European horse-showing is the system of moving through the levels. In both the dressage and jumper rings (there are no hunters) each horse and rider pair must qualify to move up with 10 scores of over 60% (dressage) and 10 clear rounds (jumping). This gives the horse and rider time to finesse their skills at each level before moving on. Also, each horse and rider team are competing against amateur and professionals alike.
